  2. Kroos wants Euros final win for perfect send-offpublished at 15:51 3 July

    Toni Kroos is confident that the final game of his career will be the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on 14 July.

    The German midfielder announced in May that he would retire from football after the Euros.

    However the 34-year-old will first face Spain and his Real Madrid team-mate Joselu in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on Friday.

    "I don't think tomorrow will be my last game," Kroos told reporters on Wednesday at Germany's base camp in Herzogenaurach.

    The 2014 World Cup winner stepped down from the national team in 2021 but agreed to return in March.

    "The idea of returning was tied to the goal of winning the Euros," Kroos said. "If I didn't see the chance of achieving it with the team, I wouldn't have done it."

    Fans have gathered to welcome home their national heroes in Georgia, after they were knocked out of Euro 2024 by Spain in the last 16 stage of the tournament.

    The Georgian team participated in the Euros for the first time in their history and as you can see, the Georgians are proud as punch!

    England and Brentford forward Ivan Toney on message to fans: "It's very important [fan support], like I've said, in football you need that 12th man. And the fans are that, when they're behind us, cheering us on, creating that atmosphere, it does push the players forward. I'm sure they'll be doing that with the next game and the games going forward. We love the videos when everyone back home, beers going everywhere, the excitement. Hopefully that can continue."

    Ivan Toney on whether racist abuse like that suffered by England players after the Euro 2020 final would put him off taking a penalty in a shootout: "I'm a confident person, if I score, I score. If I miss, I miss. We have to step up and have the courage to take the penalties. What will be will be.

    "For those who racially abuse a player for missing a penalty or doing something wrong, more fool them."

    On where he gets his confidence from: "It's within you, from the people around you and the manager, who puts his trust in you. It's from everyone around you."

    England forward Ivan Toney on if he feels he has grown as a player at the tournament: "The quality in the team and on the bench is frightening. The standard of football is where I do see myself so it has improved me as a person."

    And on if he is learning anything new in training: "Yeah, everyday I am trying to learn new things. With players like this everyone is trying to help each other and right now I am not playing games so it is giving me that extra bit of hunger to take my opportunity when it comes."

    On the England fans: "You heard the noise, the atmosphere was top. They played their part in getting us over the line."

    On whether the dramatic circumstances of the Slovakia win has changed the mood in the England camp: "It has a little bit, but we take it a game at a time. The mood is still high, it has always been high. Everybody is full of confidence and hopefully we can take the momentum into the next game."

    Ivan Toney on England's next test at Euro 2024, against Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday: "It's going to be a tough game, there's some quality players [in the Switzerland side]. They're a great side and doing well in the tournament so far. Full respect to them. We just concentrate on ourselves, concentrate on what we can do best.

    "Hopefully the [England] players are more than enough to win the game.

    "Every game is a battle. We just have to be up for the test, ready to work hard and be ready for the fight that the Swiss will put up."

    On how he works out his role when he goes on as a substitute: "We know the next role. You see towards the end of the game there were a lot of attacking players on the pitch and we had to shuffle everyone about, players playing in positions they don't usually play. But the quality of players we have are capable of doing that."

    England forward Ivan Toney on his role in Jude Bellingham's acrobatic late equaliser against Slovakia: "I feel we do a lot at club football. If you can't get the ball you [do something else]. I pulled the defender away. Take nothing away from Jude... a run is not a wasted run even if you don't get the ball."

    On controlling his emotions after being sent on so late against Slovakia, he added: "At my club [Brentford], there is a guy called Michael Caulfield [a sports psychologist] and he talks about controlling your emotions. Yes, I was annoyed but there was still 30 minutes of football to play [including extra-time] and you have got to come out of that mood and focus.

    "There is a lot more to give for myself. There was 30 minutes of football and you have to play your part and I did that."

    Brentford forward Ivan Toney on the support he has received from England manager Gareth Southgate: "He's been great.     We may be waiting for Ivan Toney's press conference, but Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has already done his.

    Prior to his side's quarter-final with England on Saturday, Yakin said: "We played against Germany we were good, we played against Italy, also a big team, and why can't we beat England?

    "We're in a good mood now. Let's see, it's a good challenge and my team is ready to have this big fight against England."
