It wasn't just Ralf Rangnick who picked up on the Gordon Banks vibes - England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper's name was also on all of the pundits' lips as they tried to describe Mert Gunok's save for Turkey against Austria.

"It's Gordon Banks. Unbelievable. What a moment. The keeper just spins it around the post, it's a brilliant save," was former England defender Matthew Upson's reaction on Radio 5 Live.

"That is world class! It's like a Gordon Banks replica," said Lee Dixon on ITV.

"That save from Gunok is one of the great saves of Euros history," was Chris Sutton's verdict on 5 Live.

It’s not one single save, but I really remember Courtois vs Liverpool in the Champions League final, he easily won it for them.

Sublime save from Mert Gunok denies Christoph Baumgartner equaliser

The moment Gordon Banks denied Pele at the 1970 World Cup is known as the 'save of the century' - but have we just seen another stop to match it?

This time the scene was played out in the pouring rain of Leipzig rather than the sweltering heat of Guadalajara, but Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok's leap to somehow claw away Christoph Baumgartner's header will live just as long in the memory of anyone who saw it.

It was a crucial save, too, coming at the very end of a pulsating last-16 tie and denying Austria a last-gasp equaliser their manager Ralf Rangnick felt they fully deserved.

"We didn't have the necessary luck and I believe if the game had gone to extra time we would have won," said Rangnick.

"We had time to score an equaliser, but it's difficult when they have Gordon Banks in goal!"

  5. ICYMI: Uefa investigating Bellingham over gesturepublished at 07:43 3 July

Jude Bellingham celebrates scoring against SlovakiaImage source, Getty Images

In case you missed it, European football's governing body Uefa is looking into a "potential violation" of "the basic rules of decent conduct" by Jude Bellingham for a gesture he made following his late equaliser against Slovakia in Sunday's Euro 2024 last-16 victory.

Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time.

The Real Madrid player denied it was aimed at England's opponents, saying on social media that it was an inside joke directed towards some close friends.

If found to have breached the rules, the 21-year-old could face a suspension, a fine or both.

The Three Lions have been largely knocked off the back pages by Andy Murray and Wimbledon today, with the exception of the latest on Uefa's investigation into Jude Bellingham's 'gesture'.

A report in the Express says that the England midfielder will stand by his explanation, when quizzed by Uefa, that a gesture he made after celebrating his acrobatic late equaliser against Slovakia was an "in-joke" directed at his friends.

Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice and Cody Gakpo got his third goal of Euro 2024 to help the Netherlands see off a spirited Romania in Munich and reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in 16 years.

Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring with a brilliant finish midway through the first half, cutting inside before unleashing a drive into the bottom corner.

The Netherlands missed numerous chances after that, but made sure they did not risk paying for it when substitute Malen stabbed in late on from Gakpo's ball.

Malen then wrapped up an impressive win for the Netherlands, with Romania having committed players forward, as he charged in on goal before slotting home.

  9. Turkey beat Austria in absorbing last-16 tiepublished at 07:14 3 July

    Austria 1-2 Turkey

    Highlights: Austria 1-2 Turkey

Merih Demiral scored twice - including the quickest knockout-stage goal in European Championship history - as Turkey stunned Austria in Leipzig to set up a quarter-final with the Netherlands.

This was arguably the best game of the tournament so far, a thrilling winner-takes-all tie played in pouring rain at a frenetic pace, with both teams roared forward by their fervent support.

From Demiral’s first goal in the first minute to a stunning save by Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok to deny Austria an equaliser in the last, there was barely time for the crowd to draw a breath.

Turkey opened the scoring with just 57 seconds on the clock. Arda Guler's corner was not cleared and Demiral pounced from close range.

Just before the hour mark, the same duo combined again. With Austria piling on the pressure, a rare foray forward resulted in another Guler corner that the 6ft 4in centre-back Demiral rose to powerfully head home.

Austria pulled a goal back when Stefan Posch flicked on Marcel Sabitzer's corner and substitute Michael Gregoritsch was unmarked to turn the ball home at the far post.

Ralf Rangnick's side poured forward in search of an equaliser but, whatever they tried, they found the Turkey defence resolute.
