  1. England preparing to face back five?published at 11:18 3 July

BBC football news reporter at the England camp

A back five of mannequins has been set up at England training. England have had issues playing against back threes and fives so far this tournament.

Switzerland play with a back five. It’s also how England finished the match against Slovakia as they closed out the win.

It is the easier side of the draw, although people get upset when you say stuff like that.

England's issue is they have got to look after themselves. Do England have the players to hurt any team in the competition? Yes, they do. Have they shown that? Absolutely not.

But the way I look at it is they are due a performance in this tournament. It has to come, it has to click at some point.

It'll be really interesting to see if there are changes to personnel. Gareth [Southgate] isn't one who takes risks.

I think Cole Palmer, with the cameos we've seen from him this tournament, he deserves a starting place on Saturday [against Switzerland].

It will be billed as Cristiano Ronaldo v Kylian Mbappe, yet Portugal have [plenty of other] world-class players - [such as] Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes - who can hurt France. But France, as boring as they are, seem to find a way of going deep into tournaments. It's perfectly poised this one.

The best save ever is undoubtedly Rene Higuita’s scorpion kick. No save will ever be replayed more!

Spain for me feel like the most complete package. We know how good they are with the ball, but the way they are out of possession and the way they hunt teams down.

They are one of the best teams at winning the ball back in the final third. That's how they suffocate opponents and if you can't get hold of the ball against them, you're in big trouble.

I think thy look like the most complete team so far in this tournament. It's going to be a very, very tough game for Germany.

  8. Quarter-final is 'going to be an absolute corker'published at 10:50 3 July

Spain v Germany (Fri, 17:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on the Football Daily podcast

If there's any criticism of Spain, they haven't been as ruthless as they could have been.

The way they are playing, the way they are controlling games, the wing wizards that they have.

[Nico] Williams off that left-hand side is such an incredible talent. I actually think going into this one, Spain have the advantage.

Then you look at some of the players Germany have. Toni Kroos coming back and running the midfield,[Jamal] Musiala and I actually think [Kai] Havertz has had a decent tournament. So that is mouth-watering and Spain will be really tested.

This match is going to be an absolute corker!

Schmeichel vs Rapid Vienna. 4th December 1996. Better than Banks in my opinion.

Best save other than the Banks one was Jim Montgomery for Sunderland in the FA Cup final vs Leeds.

  11. England third favourites to make finalpublished at 10:39 3 July

    Simon Gleave
Head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote

England are in the 'easier' half of the draw according to Gracenote's rankings, but they have the tougher of the two quarter-finals in that half.

England are currently third favourites behind the Netherlands and Spain to reach the final (29% chance) according to the latest Gracenote simulations. Spain v England (8.7%), France v England (8%) and Germany v England (7.8%) are the fourth, fifth and sixth most likely finals according to those simulations. The most likely three finals all involve the Netherlands.

No mention of Jimmy Montgomery's v Leeds for Sunderland in the 1973 FA Cup final?

    Davy G from Sunderland

Montgomery's double save for Sunderland against Leeds is worth a shout. Gunok's save is excellent and instinctive but nothing on Bank's for me.

During Romania and the Netherlands' last-16 tie on Tuesday some trainers were thrown on to the pitch.

They landed by the Romania goal and keeper Florin Nita, who had to kick one out of the way in the build-up to one of Donyell Malen's goals.

Objects being thrown on to the pitch has become a disappointing feature of Euro 2024.

In Tuesday's later game, Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was struck by an object thrown from the stands as he prepared to take a corner, while Turkey corner-taker Arda Guler had to avoid a shower of plastic beer cups as he celebrated after laying on his side's second goal in their 2-1 win over Austria.

England manager Gareth Southgate also had plastic beer cups thrown in his direction as he applauded Three Lions supporters after their 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

Best save in my lifetime was Peter Schmeichel vs Rapid Vienna. Almost a carbon copy of the famous Gordon Banks save.

    Phil in Truro

Peter Schmeichel against Rapid Vienna in the 1996 Champions League is the best save I've ever seen. Special mention to Thomasz Kuszczak for West Brom vs Wigan in 2006 and Craig Gordon for Sunderland vs Bolton in 2010.

Uefa has opened an investigation into the "alleged inappropriate behaviour" of Turkey's goalscorer Merih Demiral.

Chelsea are set to sign England international Lucy Bronze on a free transfer from Barcelona.

The defending Women’s Super League champions are closing in on an agreement for a two-year deal, with an option to extend for a further year.

Bronze, 32, leaves Barcelona upon the expiry of her contract this month.

The former Manchester City defender will link up with Chelsea assistant manager Camille Abily, who was part of the coaching staff when Bronze played at Lyon and won three successive Women’s Champions League titles.

At Barcelona, Bronze won back-to-back European crowns, also as part of a treble of silverware in the 2023-24 season.

Chelsea felt they could not miss out on the chance to sign a player of Bronze’s quality when she was available for free in the market.

She was a player that attracted new Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, and marks the first high-profile signing of her new era.

  19. 'In Holland, they expect Van Dijk to do more'published at 10:03 3 July

    Romania 0-3 Netherlands

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Cody Gakpo was not the only Liverpool player to come under the spotlight during the Netherlands' 3-0 win over Romania.

Former Netherlands defender Mario Melchiot told BBC Radio 5 Live that Reds centre-back Virgil van Dijk is often judged on his all-round game for the national team, not just his defending:

"In Liverpool we cannot doubt about his ability from what he has shown, I don’t think anybody can question it. I enjoy watching him too because he’s a great player, but, when it comes to Holland, they sometimes want to see different things from you.

"Van Dijk, he is a defender, that’s what he’s good at, that’s what he’s focused on - playing the ball simple and doing his job. In Holland, they expect you to do more than that, which sometimes goes against him because they expect him to set up the tempo, lead the line, passing the ball [out of defence] and everything. Then his focus might go away from defending.

"The way Holland set up and the way they played yesterday, it was a better advantage for him because the midfield was picking up the ball, he could just do his job. He plays totally different when he plays for Holland, than when he plays for Liverpool."

  20. Liverpool have to get the 'best' out of Gakpopublished at 09:56 3 July

Former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge went on to X, formally known as Twitter, to talk about Cody Gakpo's performance: "Gakpo is a different player for Netherlands man. Gotta get the best out of him at LFC."
