Giorgi Mamardashvili made 21 saves in the group stages, equalling the most by a goalkeeper in European Championship history.

At the other end of the Georgia team, goalkeeper Mamardashvili has been outstanding in Germany.

Also 23, he was inspired in the second group game against the Czech Republic, making 11 saves to ensure a vital point.

    • Jack, Newcastle United: If we are seriously looking for a new long-term number one, he looks great value.

    • Tom, Nottingham Forest: A good transfer window will include signing a goalkeeper. Mamardashvili has really impressed me with very good saves and he would be the perfect signing.

    • Ethan, Southampton: Mamardashvili has been unbelievable in goal for Georgia and, with Gavin Bazunu out for a long time, he could be a perfect signing.

Think Enzo Fernandez at Qatar 2022. Jack Grealish after Euro 2020. Or the ultimate example - Karel Poborsky following Euro '96.

So who so far, has been your pick of the bunch during this summer's European Championship in Germany?

While all fans want to see attacking football, we need to be pragmatic. England, like all teams at the Euros, know that conceding as few goals as possible while controlling possession as far as possible in the middle third greatly increases your chances of not being eliminated. Not being eliminated is 90 percent of the equation, is it not? Every team understands that, which is why we see all teams being pretty well organised and defensively solid. This is a long, hard tournament after a very long season. Let us not expect high intensity pressing and then all scrambling back to defend if the press is broken. I do not think the team would get too far doing that - even if the "performance" may be more entertaining to watch. Southgate does need to make attack-minded changes a bit earlier then the last 5 minutes though? The further England progress the more the fans will "forget" about the entertainment factor of the team's performance - what is more entertaining and enjoying that reaching a Final or winning? Certainly not playing "entertaining football" and going out early!

  4. 'We're talking more about the performance than the result itself now'published at 12:25 3 July

    Nedum Onuoha
    Former Manchester City defender

The last few days I think the narrative has been set regarding England. I was asked to come on a programme "to react to England's performance".

But I thought, why would I not react to England's result?

We're talking more about the performance than the result itself now.

But if the result is a positive one in these final stages, then surely that's the objective?

England at Euro 2020 were not at their best in the final against Italy, but they only lost on penalties so their performance is only really discussed because of the fact they lost.

Had they won the shootout, how many people would discuss the performance and say it needs to be better for the next tournament? Nobody.

That's kind of where we're at. It's making some people uncomfortable because they believe if you're not playing well you're going to lose.

Yet if you have the ability to grind out a result, I think that's a huge asset to take it into the final stages.

Senegal international Iliman Ndiaye joins his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye after singing a five-year contract for Everton for an undisclosed fee,

Ndiaye spent a year playing for Marseille in Ligue 1, making 46 appearances and becoming a essential component of the French team's run to the Europa League semi-finals.

“I am so pleased to be an Everton player,” he told evertontv. “The main reasons I wanted to join were how big the club is, its history and the part I can play in helping the team in the forward direction it is going in. I’m so excited and can’t wait to get going.

“Kevin [Thelwell] and the manager both spoke to me and made me feel wanted. My Senegal teammate Idrissa also played a part and spoke highly of the Club and a lot of good things.

“As a player, I like to dribble, show skills and get the fans out their seats. I want to score goals and get assists but I also like to work hard. I love running, chasing the ball, getting the team high up the pitch. As a striker, you're the first defender. I love doing that bit.

For pure consistency of incredible saves, David De Gea between 2014-2019 is mind boggling. Yes I am biased because I’m a United fan, some saves like the one against Giacherrini (Sunderland away, the Januzaj game) where it’s often not in his best ever save compilations blows my mind.

  8. Bellingham on 'humble nice guy' Guehipublished at 11:56 3 July

England defender Marc Guehi misses England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday through suspension.

Jude Bellingham spoke about the Palace man's vital assist for his overhead kick against Slovakia in the England in-house 'Diary Room' interview format.

"Probably the best flick on header in England history. He’ll never take any credit for it. But it’s important that he knows how appreciative I am and the team are of his contribution.

"The most humble geezer ever.... he thinks I’m just going to let him get away with a little handshake after he set up the most important goal of my life!

"I’m really big on giving people their flowers especially when they’ve been as good as he has so far this tournament.

"He’s set up a goal that is so important to us as a team.

"He’s only a little bit older than me but when you speak to him and when you’re around him, you get the idea he’s about 40 and has played like three careers.

"He’s such a nice guy that you actually forget about his physical presence and playing against him.

Whenever I see him go up for headers I think ‘Oh yeah it’s nice guy Marc’ and then it’s ‘boom’ and it’s like ‘oh yeah not-so-nice-guy’ Marc."

It looks like it is probably a bit cold in Germany today with several of the players in joggers rather than shorts.

They are playing one-touch football, trying to keep the ball away from a player in the middle of the circle - which is currently Bukayo Saka.

There will have to be one enforced change for the game against Switzerland as Marc Guehi is suspended.

John Stones has his knee strapped but is moving fine.

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa came on late in the last game against Slovakia when England were trying to close out the win, so he could be in line to come in.

Although, when Guehi went down injured in that match it was Lewis Dunk who was sent out to warm up.

    England

Luke Shaw and Declan Rice are in a pair once again during warm-up drills, they have been partnered up quite a few times during training.

Shaw is looking bright, although not much can be read into that as to whether he will start or even feature for England. Taking part in training does not tell us anything new as the Manchester United defender has featured in several sessions so far as he steps up his return from injury.
