Real Madrid at the Bernabéu is one of the toughest fixtures in world football — but this is exactly the kind of night Arsenal need to embrace if they want to be seen as a true European force. Forget the noise around Madrid’s comebacks; Arsenal arrive with a 3-0 lead for a reason. They've outplayed Madrid once and they can do it again. Mikel Arteta is right not to sit back. The moment you start playing not to lose, especially against a team like Madrid, you invite pressure and chaos. Arsenal’s strength lies in their intensity, their structure, and their bravery — not in parking the bus. The narrative will favour Madrid, it always does. But this Arsenal side has grown up. They’re not here to survive — they’re here to make a statement. Tonight, they can prove they belong at Europe’s top table, not just as visitors, but as contenders.

  4. Real Madrid send Arsenal a Chat GPT messagepublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 16 April

Real Madrid v Arsenal (20:00 BST, 0-3 on agg)

Real Madrid took to X, external this morning to send Arsenal a message before their Champions League quarter-final clash this evening.

The tweet included a video of Real Madrid asking Chat GPT to translate the phrase 'Noventa minuti en el Bernabéu son molto longo' which means 'Ninety minutes at Bernabéu is a very long time' into as many languages as possible.

The screen recorded video shows the phrase translated into Italian, French and German as the current holders aim for a 'remontada' (comeback) at the Bernabéu.

The 15-time Champions League winners trail after a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the first leg of their quarter-final at Emirates Stadium last week.

As an Arsenal fan I’m scared. Real Madrid have such pedigree in this competition and have the players to turn over the 3-0 lead. The first goal will be crucial. If Arsenal get it, then I think we will be safe. If Madrid score first then we will go out.

  6. Talk of La Remontada...published at 14:44 British Summer Time 16 April

Real Madrid v Arsenal (20:00 BST, 0-3 on agg)

Talk of La Remontada - the Spanish word for comeback - has been buzzing around Madrid in recent days.

Real, the 15-time champions of Europe, have a reputation for doing the seemingly impossible in recent Champions League campaigns.

On three out of the past four occasions on which they have trailed after the first leg in the Champions League, they have fought back to reach the next round - against Wolfsburg in 2015-16 and in 2021-22 against both Paris St-Germain and Manchester City.

However, Arsenal supporters can take solace from the fact that not since 1975-76 have Real Madrid fought back from trailing by three goals after a first leg in the European Cup - doing so on that occasion against Derby County following a 4-1 defeat.

The countdown to kick-off is on at the Bernabeu, where the hosts will hope for a miraculous recovery while the Gunners aim to complete the job and secure a first Champions League semi-final since 2009.

The first leg was all about Declan Rice and those two glorious free-kicks.

They still get better with every watch, don't they?

The question is, who will prove the hero - and for which team - in Madrid tonight...

    Arsenal

    Mikel ArtetaImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking before Champions League quarter-final: "When you have to create a story, first of all you have to be excited about it. You have to be really prepared for it and also really convinced of what you want to achieve.

"Then it’s about insisting and going step by step. You build history as a club by doing it many times. Sometimes failing, sometimes being successful. Last year we had a bad experience and we want to be better this year and apply that to be in the semi-final.

On how to block out the noise: "It is impossible. There is obviously the narrative which will give the fuel to them [Real Madrid]. We have to prove ourselves now in this context, not what has gone before. And that is the beauty of it, that’s the challenge and that is the great thing about sport.

"We have proved that we can do it so that will give us reassurance and confidence and now what happens on the pitch is the only thing that matters."

  11. 'Can Arsenal handle the pressure?'published at 14:22 British Summer Time 16 April

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on the Football Daily podcast

You can never say that this tie is over despite Arsenal having a three-goal lead. Everyone comes to this stadium with 90 minutes of football to play. Yes Arsenal are ahead, but if the Bernabéu gets going and one goal goes in, the pressure will heap on Arsenal.

Arsenal have pressure now already. There was little on them in the first game because there was more talk around Real Madrid. Now the tables have turned and the pressure is on them.

Can they deal with it? Can they manage the game to get the result they need?

  14. United's worst Premier League season confirmedpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

Sunday's heavy loss at Newcastle United confirmed that this Manchester United team is officially the club's worst in Premier League history.

That defeat left United 14th with just six games to go - and means they can finish on a maximum of 56 points, which is two fewer than their previous record low in 2021-22.

It has been a season to forget as far as the league is concerned, but a Europa League triumph would certainly end things on a positive note before another summer rebuild.

Since Ruben Amorim's first game in charge, only Southampton (59), Tottenham (53) and Leicester (53) have shipped more goals in all competitions than Manchester United (48) among Premier League clubs.

And only Southampton (19) and Aston Villa (13) have made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season than United (12).

  16. 'I think Andre deserves to return to competition'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

    Manchester United

Lastly from Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, on whether he has spoken to Andre Onana personally:

"When I made that decision last weekend I talked before with Andre. That is important for me to explain to the player what I am thinking.

"Sometimes it is my feelings as a coach that can make my decision more than what they are saying to me. I have the conversation but then it is my decision in the end."

On whether he is convinced Onana is ready to return: "Yeah, I have that feeling for sure. The team is the most important thing. I'm not putting Andre because I think Andre deserves to return to competition, I'm thinking about the game because it is really important for us."

  17. 'You choose the questions, I choose the answer'published at 14:03 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, pressed on Manchester United's goalkeeping situation and whether he will look for a new goalkeeper in the summer:

"Everything you do has two ways. If in the end he is going to be really good tomorrow - I'm sure of that - it is a good decision but the other way and it is a bad decision.

"You never know. I'm trying to be really clear on things, make the evaluation, be simple and not overthink it. Andre Onana has one weekend where he rests and now he is ready to start this game."

On potentially looking for a replacement: "We need to improve. What we should do is improve any position in the team with the players we have and try to bring characteristics for next year."

Pressed further on that, he responds: "You choose the questions I choose the answer. My answer is that we need to improve every position in the field. Goalkeeper is the same, we can work with Andre.

"If our team scores more goals and is more dangerous in forward [positions] we will defend better. Andre Onana has already proved he is a top player in Inter. So he has a pass. Sometimes you have some seasons that we are under performing.

"We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad. If we are talking about mistakes you can see my record - my record is the worst one in our team and I am also underperforming. I think I am the right guy to coach the team and I think the same for Andre."

Totally irrational things to say at the moment when you look at performances and results but I’m convinced Amorim is the right man for the seemingly impossible job. Give him time.

  19. 'This badge comes with a responsibility to perform'published at 13:59 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (2-2 on agg, Thur, 20:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire on what it is like when the spotlight is on a player when they aren't in form: "You try your best to ignore it all. Focus on your job, come in on a daily basis and do your best. I always said to myself 'that's all you can do'. Tomorrow night is another game of football and you go on that pitch and you give absolutely everything. When you walk off you say to yourself I have left everything out there and no matter how you perform that is only what you can do.

"It is the same for any player who wears this badge, it comes with a responsibility to perform. When you don't perform and when the league results aren't good enough, there are people who come under the spotlight. I have been in that situation myself but all you can do is day-in day-out do your best, work as hard as possible and take each game as it comes."

  20. 'Playing in front of Onana is great'published at 13:54 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (2-2 on agg, Thur, 20:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire on what it is like to play in front of Andre Onana: "First and foremost Andre has proved in his past that he is an excellent goalkeeper. He has won numerous trophies, he has played Champions League finals. During a career you always have spells of ups and downs and you find yourself a little bit out of form. It is about how you build yourself back in and find that confidence to perform again.

"At the moment he is probably feeling that everything is going against him. You take it game-by-game. He'll be there tomorrow night and he is a big personality, a big character and he will be looking forward to the game. He will want to show everyone again what he is about.

"Playing in front of Andre it's great. I have confidence in Andre, he has had a fantastic career. He has great experience and we all know he is an excellent goalkeeper.
