  1. Romeo Lavia returns from latest setbackpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 16 April

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia is back in training ahead of their Conference League match at home to Legia Warsaw.

The Belgian, 21, appeared during the first 15 minutes of open training at Cobham which was filmed by media in attendance ahead of Thursday's clash.

It remains unclear whether he will return from a muscle problem tomorrow but manager Enzo Maresca will likely discuss his availability at a press conference (15:00 BST) this afternoon.

  2. Amorim's long distance viewpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thur, 20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is one of the stranger elements of attending Manchester United training that - in the 15 minutes the media are allowed to watch - Ruben Amorim stands well away from the main group of players.

While his players are training on one pitch, Amorim quite often stands on a different one, on his own, pacing up and down, not really watching.

The bad weather in Manchester today meant he took shelter under a stand and there were others in his company.

But he was still on a completely different pitch to his players.

  3. Onana's statspublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

Andre Onana has made eight mistakes leading to goals in all competitions since his Manchester United debut at the start of the 2023-24 season - the most of any Premier League goalkeeper.

But he has also made the most saves per game of any Manchester United goalkeeper to play 900+ minutes in the Premier League in the last 20 years, averaging 3.4 per match with a save percentage of 70.1.

For comparison, David de Gea, while playing 37,289 Premier League minutes compared to Onana's 6,210 so far, made an average of 2.8 saves per match and saved 72% of shots.

Since the start of 2023-24, only Jordan Pickford (8.7) has prevented more goals based on Opta's expected goals model in the Premier League than Onana (7.5).

I'm inclined to agree with what others have said that all the eggs must be in the Europa League basket as it's our only chance at Europe and the money and player draw that accompanies it. However a small part of me would probably be relieved if we miss out as we have consistently played in Europe either in the Champions League or Europa League since 2015/16 and in that time our average season has consisted of 57 games. A season without Europe may help with fewer games to play and likely fewer injuries and the ability to focus domestically. It has done wonders for other teams in the past.

Manchester United wide-man Amad Diallo will not be involved in tomorrow's game but he is making progress in his recovery from the ankle injury he suffered in February.

While the main group were training in front of us earlier, Amad quietly came out and began a personal session with one of the United coaches.

It is not clear when the Ivory Coast international will be fit enough for a return but given United's difficulty in creating chances, it cannot come quickly enough.

I'll also consider thumbs up on the Tom Heaton post to make it interesting...

One call Ruben Amorim must get right tomorrow - and an issue he is certain to be asked about this afternoon - is who will start in goal.

Will Andre Onana be reinstated, or will number two Altay Bayindir keep his place?

Onana was left out of Sunday's heavy defeat at Newcastle United after his two errors in the 2-2 draw in Lyon, but in his place Bayindir conceded four and made a mistake for Newcastle's fourth goal.

Who do you want to see start tomorrow, United fans?

United's buy in to Amorim's system is clear and they are improving as they learn. Continuing that process without further mistakes in terms of managerial changes or foolish signings is what's important, so while winning the Europa would be helpful its not essential. United should go through against Lyon, but if they don't it's fine, it's not what this season is about.

  12. Evans back in trainingpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

    Manchester United

Manchester United fans will be pleased to see Amad Diallo nearing a return, having been a standout performer since Ruben Amorim took charge. We only saw him doing some light ball work there.

Central defender Jonny Evans was also back as part of the main training group, having been out since December due to injury.

That's all we get to see from the open section. We'll hear from Amorim at 13:30 BST, don't forget!

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca speaks to the media later before a dead rubber Conference League match against Legia Warsaw on Thursday.

Despite a 3-0 win in Poland, the Italian coach remains under pressure with Champions League qualification in doubt after a run of just five wins of the last 16 league games.

Last season's history at Leicester is repeating itself as sections of Chelsea's support say their football is boring, chanting "attack, attack, attack" at matches, and jeering players when pondering on the ball while slowly playing out from the back.

It led Maresca to hit back after the 2-2 draw with Ipswich where he accused fan negativity of impacting his players during a poor first half.

Whether right or wrong, Maresca may be playing with fire by blaming supporters for his own team's declining league form, and he will be judged on Sunday's trip to Fulham more than Thursday night's match in Europe's third tier competition.

    Serious business, these rondos.

In the background, Manchester United's goalkeepers are training together separately as that big call looms for Ruben Amorim.

Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven are all missing from this open section of training.

But, some positive news - Amad Diallo is training individually as he builds towards his return, having been out since February with an ankle injury.

  15. Tottenham, Rangers and Chelsea in action on Thursdaypublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 16 April

With Manchester United training and a news conference at 13:30 BST, we are concentrating on their Europa League campaign.

We should not forget that Tottenham and Rangers are also in quarter-final action on Thursday.

Spurs travel to Eintracht Frankfurt for the second leg after a 1-1 draw at home last week, while Rangers are 0-0 heading to Athletic Bilbao.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have a 3-0 lead before hosting Legia Warsaw in the last eight of the Conference League.

I'm going to have to disagree with Pat Nevin's comments, I think he's been very harsh. I think Man Utd are a goalkeeper and a striker away from being a top six side (which is a crazy thing to say given the money they've spent). Injuries haven't helped, Yoro was out for half the season, and I think has looked decent since he came in. Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Diallo, all starters, have been injured for a prolonged period of time. Mazraoui and Dorgu have looked okay. Bruno has been consistently excellent. You've then got players like Garnacho (20) who has struggled this season but is still so young. I don't think Amorim will be panicking, and it's not half as bad as what the media are making out. It's been a strange season, and if results go Man United's way at the weekend, they'll be 13 points off Aston Villa, who are supposedly having the Premier League season of their lives. Funny old game.

This is simply the biggest match of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. We’ve not gone back-to-back seasons with no Champions League football since he left, and without the £100m+ uplift CL football brings I can only see the gap between us and our rivals increasing. I don’t think it’s an understatement to suggest where we’ll be in 5-10 years hinges massively on the Europa League this season.
