This is one of the most important games in the club's history, and it's one of the most important games for the club's future. Playing in the Champions League provides the funds the manager needs for a reasonable overhaul. No European competition means a financial downturn for the club which could take years to overcome. This competition provides a reprieve opportunity, one that won't be available again.

  2. Man Utd's 'Frankenstein' squadpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 16 April

Man Utd v Lyon (Thu 20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

It is hard to argue against it [being the worst Manchester United squad]. Funnily enough, I thought they worked quite hard for most of the first half against Newcastle, they just weren't good enough, simple as that.

Man for man, they were nowhere near good enough. There will be a number of changes next season with players, the ageing ones will leave, but even some of the younger ones being brought in just don't look good enough.

It is a bit like a Frankenstein squad – it's been brought together by a huge number of different managers over a huge amount of time and the thought of going to completely rebuild that and rejig that – because that group of players is not going to be enough to be a Champions League or even top six or seven team next season – it needs major surgery.

But, major surgery these days costs a lot of money, particularly in football and I'm not sure how they can do it.

Ruben Amorim has been spotted standing and watching training sessions from a notable distance during his time at Manchester United, even watching his players from a separate pitch.

Wonder if we'll see similar today, or a more hands-on approach given the stakes this week?

Thursday night's Europa League quarter-final is in the balance after the first leg finished 2-2.

The French club opened the scoring through Thiago Almada but Leny Yoro hit back to see the game 1-1 at half-time.

United edged ahead thanks to a Joshua Zirkzee goal but Rayan Cherki found a late equaliser to finish the game 2-2.

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee will be out for an extended period with a hamstring injury that could mean he misses the rest of the season.

The Netherlands international, 23, limped off in the second half of Sunday's defeat at Newcastle and has been undergoing tests to determine the extent of the injury.

Head coach Ruben Amorim will address the issue when he speaks on Wednesday before the crucial Europa League match against Lyon at Old Trafford.

But multiple sources have indicated to BBC Sport there is some doubt over whether Zirkzee can feature again this season owing to the severity of the injury.

Everything rests on the Europa League for Manchester United.

The competition represents their sole hope of winning silverware this season - and only chance to make next season's Champions League.

And their quarter-final against Lyon is balanced on a knife edge after the French club's late equaliser last week.

United have team training from 11:00 BST this morning, before a news conference later today, and you'll be able to watch both live on this page.

Marcus Rashford created the most chances on the pitch. He completed the most dribbles, the most big chances and, of course, got that big assist.

He has been directly involved in five goals against PSG in the Champions League, two more than he has managed against any other side in the competition.

I was delighted when I saw his [Marcus Rashford's] number coming off. I just didn't really understand it. I didn't think it made sense. When I saw [Ollie] Watkins getting ready, I said to the guys with me 'it's okay he is going to go with a front two and we are going to suffer more'.

I really expected Watkins and Rashford to be on the pitch at the same time, not one replacing the other. I was not sure about the midfield for Unai Emery and Villa before the game tonight but even less with that substitution.

  12. Should Emery have kept Rashford on?published at 10:44 British Summer Time 16 April

Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (PSG won 5-4 on agg)

One talking point after the match was whether Unai Emery should have kept Marcus Rashford on the pitch as Aston Villa chased a goal that would have taken the match to extra time.

The Spaniard was questioned for his decision to replace Rashford with Ollie Watkins in the 76th minute, a substitution which appeared to disrupt Villa's momentum.

"I don't know what Unai Emery saw, with the way Marcus Rashford was playing, he got it wrong," former Villa full-back Stephen Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It felt like the tempo dropped when he made that substitution. You need a goal - why are you taking a striker off?"

  13. Rashford's influencepublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 16 April

Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (PSG won 5-4 on agg)

Marcus Rashford had the most touches inside the opposition box (12) of any player on the pitch during last night's gripping Champions League tie at Villa Park.

The 27-year-old also created the most chances (four) and produced the most crosses on the pitch (nine).

While he primarily operated as the central striker against PSG, he could be seen popping up right across the front line in a lively display.

Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

The narrative before Rashford came to Villa was that he's not the same player any more.

That was the narrative. He's proven everyone wrong.

He has come here and shown everybody this is who I am, and this is how I play. This is what I can bring to the table.

  15. 'PSG made it hard for themselves'published at 10:40 British Summer Time 16 April

Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (PSG won 5-4 on agg)

    Julien Laurens

I think the PSG fans will be super happy, it is four semi-finals in six seasons. The two they didn't make was when they had the disjointed team with Neymar, Messi and Mbappe up front.

I think they will be happy because they are through. They rode their luck but also I think they would have learned a lot. When they watch the game again with Luis Enrique, which they do every single game they play, it will be very interesting to see what they could have done better and what went wrong. But they did make it hard for themselves.

Following the conclusion of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-finals, we now know half of the semi-final line-up.

  17. 'PSG got lucky'published at 10:32 British Summer Time 16 April

Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (PSG won 5-4 on agg)

    Julien Laurens

I could hardly watch at the end. We said before the game, this is still a young PSG team. They are the second-youngest team in this competition and it showed in that second half. The lack of control and it is not so much having 100% of the ball, you can control the pace of the game without having the ball.

The Tielemans goal is not really acceptable [to concede]. It shows the youth of that team, especially in the midfield.

This is a great lesson. Against a better team than Villa or one that is more used to those quarter-finals they would have been out. I think they got a bit lucky, they made it harder for themselves for sure.

Aston Villa and Paris St Germain players were left looking quizzically at each other on Tuesday as the Europa League anthem blared out around Villa Park instead of the Champions League before their quarter-final second leg.

With Prince William watching on, Villa defender Ezri Konsa did a facepalm gesture as he and teammate Youri Tielemans tried to contain their laughter, while PSG's Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele exchanged puzzled glances.
