Match Facts

  • This will be the first meeting between Stuttgart and Sparta Prague in European competition, while the last time Stuttgart faced an opponent from Czechia (including Czechoslovakia) was in the 1997-98 Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final (won 3-1 on aggregate against Slavia Prague – 1-1 away, 2-0 at home).

  • Sparta Prague have only won one of their last nine games against German sides in European competition (D4 L4), going winless in five (D3 L2) since a 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin in the UEFA Champions League in March 2000.

  • Stuttgart won three of their first four home games (D1) in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League between 1984 and 2003, but have won just two of their previous eight such matches since then (D2 L4).

  • Sparta Prague have lost each of their last seven away games in the UEFA Champions League, conceding 20 goals and only scoring three times across those. Their last win on the road in the competition dates back to December 2001 (1-0 v FC Porto), with the side from Czechia winless in 12 UCL away games since then (D2 L10).

  • Following their defeat last time out against Real Madrid, Stuttgart are looking to avoid losing their opening two games of a European Cup/UEFA Champions League campaign for just a second time (previously doing so in 2007-08).

  • Sparta Prague’s 3-0 victory over RB Salzburg last time out was their biggest win in the UEFA Champions League since September 2001 (4-0 v Feyenoord). Indeed, they’ll be looking to win back-to-back matches in the competition for the first time since October 2001 (a run of three, beginning with that win versus Feyenoord).

  • Sparta Prague had just 29.1% possession in their 3-0 win over RB Salzburg on MD1. Since 2003-04, only one team have managed to win a UEFA Champions League match by 3+ goals with a lower possession average (Newcastle versus Paris SG in October 2023 – 26.9% in a 4-1 win).

  • Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav netted in his first UEFA Champions League appearance last time out (v Real Madrid), and could become just the second player to score in his first two games in the competition for the club, after Kevin Kurányi in 2003-04.

  • On his UEFA Champions League debut against Real Madrid on MD1, Stuttgart’s Atakan Karazor completed 96.8% of his passes (92/95) and made the most line-breaking passes (17) of any player in the match. Indeed, his completion rate (96.8%) was the highest of any visiting player to make 100+ touches in a UEFA Champions League game at the Santiago Bernabeu since Toni Kroos for Bayern Munich in April 2014 (97.5%).

  • Victor Olatunji was directly involved in two of Sparta Prague’s three goals against RB Salzburg on MD1 (one goal, one assist), becoming the first player to score and assist in a UEFA Champions League game for the club since Karel Poborsky in October 2003 (also 1 goal, 1 assist v Lazio).
