Match Facts

  • Barcelona and Young Boys have never previously faced each other in European competition. Indeed, the last time Barcelona faced a Swiss opponent was in the group stage of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League campaign against Basel (won 5-0 away, drew 1-1 at home).

  • The last team to win their first ever meeting with Barcelona in European competition was Rubin Kazan (2-1 in the UEFA Champions League in October 2009), with none of the last 19 sides facing them for the first time managing to pick up a victory (D3 L16).

  • Barcelona have only lost their opening home game of a UEFA Champions League campaign in one of their previous 28 tournament appearances (W25 D2), with that lone defeat coming in 2021-22 against Bayern Munich (0-3).

  • Young Boys’ last away victory in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League came all the way back in August 1960, in a 5-0 win at Irish side Limerick. They’ve played 11 away games across the two competitions since then, drawing three and losing eight of those trips.

  • Barcelona lost their final UEFA Champions League game of last season (1-4 v Paris SG) and their opener this season (1-2 v Monaco). In their history across the European Cup/Champions League (334 games played), they have never previously suffered three consecutive defeats.

  • Young Boys have kept just one clean sheet in their 19 UEFA Champions League matches (2-0 v Crvena Zvezda last season), shipping at least three goals on nine occasions.

  • 12 different Spanish players featured for Barcelona against Monaco on MD1, including seven of their 10 outfielders to start the game. Indeed, this equalled the club’s record for most Spanish players to appear in a single UEFA Champions League game (also 12 v Viktoria Plzen in November 2022).

  • Since the start of last season, Young Boys have faced 20+ shots in five of their seven UEFA Champions League matches, including exactly 20 in their 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa on MD1 this term.

  • Lamine Yamal netted Barcelona’s only goal in their defeat to Monaco, while he could become the first player aged under 18 to score in consecutive UEFA Champions League appearances. The current youngster player to do so in the competition is Monaco’s George Ilenikhena (18y 34d), who scored the winning goal against Barcelona on MD1 this season.

  • In Young Boys’ UEFA Champions League opener against Aston Villa, Filip Ugrinic had the most shots (4), created the most chances (3), and applied the most pressures (79) of any player for the Swiss side.
