Match Facts

  • This will be the third meeting in major European competition between PSV Eindhoven and Sporting CP, with both sides recording a win each in the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League (PSV 3-2 Sporting & Sporting 4-0 PSV).

  • Sporting have lost both of their previous two UEFA Champions League matches against Dutch opposition, losing both matches to Ajax (1-5 & 2-4) in the group stage of the 2021/22 campaign.

  • PSV are unbeaten in each of their last four home matches in the UEFA Champions League (W1 D3) and haven’t went 5+ unbeaten at the Philips Stadion in the competition since a run of 11 between November 2003 and December 2005 (W9 D2).

  • After losing eight of their nine UEFA Champions League away matches between October 2014 and September 2021 (W1), Sporting CP have since lost just two of their last six on the road in the competition (W2 D2), recording draws away at Tottenham Hotspur (1-1) and Manchester City (0-0) in this run, as well as 4-1 and 3-0 wins at Besiktas and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively.

  • PSV have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 UEFA Champions League matches (29 goals conceded), beating Lens 1-0 in the group stage of last season’s competition.

  • Sporting CP won 2-0 against Lille in their opening UEFA Champions League match this season – only in 2022-23, also under Rúben Amorim, have they ever won both of their first two games in a single campaign in the competition.

  • Peter Bosz has lost his last two games in charge of PSV in the UEFA Champions League, while only once previously has he suffered three consecutive defeats with a single club in the competition (his first three games with Bayer Leverkusen in 2019-20).

  • Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres has been involved in eight goals in nine starts in major European competitions (6 goals, 2 assists), scoring on his UEFA Champions League debut last time out. Only two Swedish players have ever scored in both of their first two appearances in the competition, with Henrik Larsson and Johan Elmander both doing so in 2001.

  • Since the start of last season, PSV’s Johan Bakayoko is one of only six players to have created 20+ chances from open play and completed 20+ dribbles in the UEFA Champions League (21 in each). Indeed, Jude Bellingham is the only player younger than Bakayoko to have done so in this period.

  • Along with scoring the opening goal, Viktor Gyökeres created more chances than any other Sporting CP player against Lille on MD1 (4). Indeed, his four chances created were the most by a player who also scored for the Portuguese side in a UEFA Champions League game since Nani in November 2014 (7 v Maribor).
