  2. PL chief Masters wants VAR improvementpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 26 April

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters was asked about Nottingham Forest's behaviour this week when it came to releasing a statement on Sunday which said VAR Stuart Attwell was a Luton fan, implying he should not have been on duty for their defeat at Everton.

"There is an allowance for fair comments but we are disappointed when statements are made implicating refs for why they have made decisions," said Masters.

"That is part of an investigation. We can’t comment on that.

"English referees do a very good job.

"We know VAR needs to improve and part of that is getting rules to be upgraded so there is more space to communicate with fans. We want to improve the situation for fans."

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants referees to take more responsibility in their decision making.

The manager faced the media for the first time this week, since Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Everton.

Forest sparked controversy after questioning VAR Stuart Attwell's integrity when they had three penalty claims rejected.

They are likely to be charged by the Football Association and Premier League for their comments but Nuno still feels officials are relying on VAR too much.

“My personal feeling is about referees not taking decisions on the pitch,” he said, ahead of Sunday’s visit of Manchester City.

"They were doing it before so they should do it again and then comes VAR, not the other way around. The other way around is a huge mistake for the game.

“I can speak and tell my opinion and try to be honest. The general feeling in football is referees are not taking their own decisions so this is affecting a lot.

"They are not taking their decisions and waiting for the VAR to intervene is not helping the situation."

If we get that right, then we will see what happens but it will be at the end of the season. You can continue asking me the questions, I'll be happy to take them but it's not as if I have changed tracks, we've always said we will make it at the end of the season. As far as I'm concerned that will still be the decision."

On the potential to qualify for European football for a fourth consecutive season: “We’re eighth in the Premier League, with four games to go. It’s an incredible position to be in, and we’ve played 12 or 13 games more than some teams who weren’t in Europe. From our point of view, we’re in there, we’re still in with a shout and we’ll try to make it.”

We're at Chelsea's training ground in Cobham waiting to speak to Emma Hayes and Niamh Charles.

It's a huge game for the Blues as they hope to hold onto a 1-0 first-leg lead in their Women's Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.

Last week's performance in Spain was widely regarded as one of the best under manager Hayes.

But they might have to go one better to get through to their second final in the competition with Barca looking for revenge.

The Spanish giants and defending champions had not lost a home game for five years. They will have taken it personally.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag on Burnley and what he expects from a Vincent Kompany side: "They play high-intensity football. They have changed their approach slightly in the season. They have had good results and are hard to beat, and all the compliments to Vincent and his staff.

"We can't afford to think [it's only X] about any opponent. With the team we have available, we have to be creative. We have to take every opponent with 100% focus. We can't allow and do a little bit less."

  9. PL chief fears calendar 'at tipping point'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 26 April

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The PFA has given warnings about the consequences of no changes being made to the match calendar, which they say is risking player welfare.

Uefa has expanded European competitions next season, whilst Fifa has expanded the World Cup and introduced a new 32-team Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States in 2025.

The FA has scrapped replays from next season - which has generated a huge amount of debate, not much of it in agreement with the move.

"It is getting to a tipping point," said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

"The feedback we have from players is that there is too much football being played and there is constant expansion.

"The Premier League hasn’t changed shape. What has changed over the last few decades is the march of international and regional football competitions.

"We are proud to be different in England. We still have two cup competitions. We still believe it is for us to determine how big our league is.

"But if you pour more liquid into a cup that is already full, it will overflow. That is what is happening at the moment, not just in terms of the calendar but in terms of the players’ ability to be able to perform at their best in the competitions they want to play in.

"It stands to reason if you overload the calendar and the players, at some point, something has to give."

  11. 'Partnerships are so important in football'published at 14:48 British Summer Time 26 April

Manchester United v Burnley (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag about the club's centre-back issues this season: "It's difficult. I know that from experience. Partnerships are so important in football. Things have to be decided in split seconds so that you know with each other where to run. So important to have the right connections, to be stable."

  12. Man City charges 'resolved in near future'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 26 April

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has been speaking after the European Leagues General Assembly in London.

Although the subject matter was supposed to be wider than just the Premier League, a reporter cunningly phrased a question on Manchester City to ask whether it was right Pep Guardiola's side could win a second title when their 115 charges remain outstanding.

This is what Masters said: "We can’t comment on the case, the date is set," he said. "The case will resolve itself at some point in the near future.

"I can’t make any further comment on it."

I am told the hearing date has not changed. I assume it to be the autumn but this has never been officially communicated.

West Ham boss David Moyes on team news: "Jarrod Bowen is back training so there’s a good chance he’ll be available. We’ll still need to monitor him.

“We have a couple of issues with centre-halves. Nayef [Aguerd] is not available. [Konstantinos] Mavropanos has a chance, but we’ll have to see how he is.”

  14. Champions League 'amazing motivation'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 26 April

Aston Villa v Chelsea (Sat, 20:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on his side potentially getting a Champions League spot: "Amazing, amazing motivation we have in front of us but realistic as well because we deserve to be contenders now.

"Five months ago, even a month ago, you were asking the same, if we were contenders to be in the top seven teams or contenders to be in the Champions League and I was always saying the same message, we weren't but, of course, getting to game week 34, we are in the table with the possibility we have now."

On the likelihood Villa will have to make the top four to qualify for the Champions League: "Of course, we were excited with the fifth position being in Champions League but we lost it and now we are contenders to be [in the top four] and have to fight with competitors like Tottenham. But the attitude we have is a very good step. We are now in Europa League and another important step ahead. I am very proud of the work we did, but of course now we are adding another objective now to try and get the Champions League position."

  16. 'I have a lot of sympathy for Rashford'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 26 April

Manchester United v Burnley (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Marcus Rashford responded to a post on X last night supporting the England forward over his treatment online.

The post described the targeting of Rashford on social media as "absolutely disgusting", "cruel" and "abuse".

Rashford said on X, external: "I appreciate your support! It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag added his own support: "I have a lot of sympathy for him. So last season, I think he had the best season he has had in his career, he scored 30 goals, and you see what he is capable of.

"Then this season, he didn't give the performances, and people are very critical, and I think we have to back him. Everyone should back him and push him to get back to the levels he was last year."

  17. 'Out of possession, we have to be better organised'published at 14:31 British Summer Time 26 April

Manchester United v Burnley (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag on what development he would like to see with his team in the remaining matches: "Out of possession, we have to be better organised, better disciplined and we have to play with a high intensity.

"And we have to keep doing the stuff in possession, because I think we make huge progress in this season in attacking transitions - we have scored so many goals. If you see the difference between first season and second season now, it's immense, so we develop our attacking style of playing."

On why he thinks it is taking longer out of possession for his side to get to where he wants them to be: "Most important this season is the back four. We didn't have a sustainable back four.

"There have been so many different partnerships, swapping the full-backs. It's also that our attacking players have to contribute more; [be] more disciplined, more pressure on the ball and matching better the runs."

  20. Foden's 'work ethic is unbelievable'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 26 April

Nottingham Forest v Manchester City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on the impact of midfielder Phil Foden, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season: "Phil has a sixth gear but he cannot play all the time in sixth gear - he has to play in second and third. I think, with time, he will learn that.

"Everything is so quick; football has to be sometimes slower (in order) to become quicker after to surprise the opponent. He will understand the game through years and years of experiences. But he loves to play and his work ethic is unbelievable.

"We are really pleased and happy for him and hopefully in the last month ahead of us he doesn't stop. I would love for him to go in sixth gear every single action but after you are less precise - that is not effective.

"He has to know when he has to be aggressive and when he has to be more calm. He has improved a lot from the beginning of the season and the previous seasons."
