Well, have Leicester put down a bit of a marker tonight?

Despite losing some key players already in the transfer window they are up to third place with a workmanlike win over highly-fancied Birmingham.

"Definitely happy because it's never easy to win in this league against a good team that has done well so far.

"We had to grind it out but at the same time credit to the players. It was a game with perhaps not many chances, we need definitely need to improve things but at the same time I see a team that has a soul, that has commitment, desire and that's the foundation of everything that we want to build here.

"In the dynamics of the game sometimes we need to get much better, controlling the game and slowing the possession, it was not easy because Birmingham have got good players on the pitch as well.

"It was not easy for us and perhaps we need to improve, when it's time to keep it and when it's time to accelerate, but in terms of conceding chances it was not many, I don't think that Jakub [Stolarczyk] had a lot of work to do."

Birmingham boss Chris Davies has been talking to Sky Sports after their first league defeat of the season:

"We're disappointed to lose the game - I thought we had the lion's share of the game, were strong and dominant throughout.

"I thought we disrupted Leicester and played well with the ball until the final bit where we couldn't create clear chances.

"A lot of it was good but it was a poor opening goal to concede although we recovered well from that but then a poor second goal to concede and it's difficult to take."

Leicester City

Scorer of Leicester's second, Ricardo Pereira speaking to Sky Sports:

"It was a very good assist from Jeremy Monga. He said to him before he came on, let's try to make the difference and he did with the perfect ball."

On his booking earned for a reckless challenge on the edge of the area that could have been interpreted differently and led to a red card:

"I said to the ref I touched the ball but at the same time I touched him and he said it was a little bit reckless but it is what it is. Fortunately nothing happened from the free-kick and we won and that's the most important thing."

Leicester can relax after their 2-0 win over Birmingham tonight got the Championship action under way while in League Two Salford City broke Cheltenham's hearts with an injury-time leveller.

But there is lots more to come on Saturday and we have picked out just five things you might want to look out for in the EFL this weekend.

"It's always amazing having this moment, it's all about the team and how we support each other.

On playing again after his injury last season:

"I just want to say thank you to the medical team and the all of the team and my team-mates. It's just a blessing to be back like this and running again. It's a good feeling, thank God."

I didn't expect the second half to be as comfortable as that but Leicester set the tone early.

There weren't too may times that Birmingham got touches in the box. Leicester just controlled the press.

Credit has to go to the manager. It looked like a team performance and that's what was impressive.

They'll be so many positives, not only the win but the performances as well.

The high press in the second half impressed me. Jannik Vestergaard marshalled the defence and Hamza Choudhury had a good game as well.

It was a fantastic display and they'll be really happy with that.

Goals from Abdul Fatawu and Ricardo Pereira help to move Leicester up to third place ahead of tomorrow's games in the Championship.

Birmingham drop out of the early top six.

There's an international break to come next week before the Foxes head to Oxford on 13 September and Blues visit Stoke on the same day.

Leicester make it four home wins in a row for the first time since April 2024 while Birmingham taste defeat in the league for the first time since March 4 2025.

Abdul Fatawu's superb early finish and Ricardo Pereira's late goal seal the points for the home side.

It was a game of few chances but Birmingham clearly missed Jay Stansfield who was absent with a foot injury.

The home side always looked dangerous going forward and limited the visitors to just one clear chance when Jakub Stolarczyk blocked Ethan Laird's shot.

Seven straight wins for the Foxes in all competitions against Blues and Leicester move up to third place in the Championship.

Leicester were good in the first half but they have really impressed me in the second.

This is by far their best performance of the season so far.

It's not been a game with a heap of chances.

Leicester have done enough while Birmingham, despite all their possession have just looked a little toothless.

The home side clear a corner and then Demarai Gray, to jeers from fans who used to cheer him, runs the ball out of play.

We will have at least a further nine minutes.

Surely too late for Birmingham though?

What a talent Jeremy Monga is. He could have gone into the corner but he took his man on and what a finish from Ricardo Pereira.

It's a lovely dink in from Monga and Pereira is there. What a lovely finish.

It's been a fantastic performance from Leicester in this second half.

The cynics among us can apologise to Abdul Fatawu later.

He's had to go off with what looks like cramp and Wout Faes is on.

Abdul Fatawu is down for Leicester - the cynics would say he's just looking to take the sting out of Birmingham who are beginning to push hard for a leveller.

The visitors bring on Lyndon Dykes for Phil Neumann - Dykes scored a late, late winner at Blackburn a fortnight ago...
