  1. Spurs slump to AZ defeatpublished at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

    AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Tottenham

Let's switch attention to Spurs and a disappointing performance at Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

Ange Postecoglou's side mustered just one shot on target in a flat display.

Teenager Lucas Bergvall sliced an attempted clearance from Troy Parrott's cross into his own net for the only goal of the game.

It could have been worse for Spurs but Guglielmo Vicario made three fine saves - including to deny former Spurs striker Parrott.

  2. England still on course for fifth Champions League placepublished at 07:51 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

After three wins in the Champions League, it was mixed fortunes for English clubs in Uefa's other club competitions last night.

But a win for Chelsea and a draw for Manchester United keeps the Premier League on track for a fifth place in next season's Champions League.

Big wins for Italian pair Roma and Lazio was balanced out by Fiorentina's defeat in Athens to Panathinaikos, while Real Betis were held at home by Vitoria Guimaraes in the Conference League.

So, England top the co-efficient table on 22.178, Spain are next on 19.892, Italy are third on 18.937 and Germany fourth on 16.671.

  3. Rangers fan dies ahead of matchpublished at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

There was some tragic news earlier on Thursday. A Rangers fan died in a road accident in Istanbul ahead of the match.

The club said it was "devastated" to have learned of the death, which happened overnight.

Reports in the Turkish press suggest that the man was crossing the road in the early hours of the morning when he was hit by a car before being run over by a second vehicle.

A statement on the Rangers website said: "The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

"We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident."

  4. 'Result and display not entirely surprising'published at 07:40 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

Some tinkering to Rangers' system had been long overdue, with the side having not kept a clean sheet in five weeks and falling two behind in their previous two outings.

The switch to three at the back offered some advantages defensively but the formation's principle aim was to carry a threat on the counter, as exemplified by the Vaclav Cerny double.

While Rangers may have belied their status as underdogs, the result and display are not entirely surprising, given their wins in Malmo and Nice earlier in the competition and solid home victories against FCSB and Union Saint-Gilloise.

There's still work to be done to reach the Europa League last eight but, with no domestic fixture this weekend, Barry Ferguson and his players have a week to prepare for the second leg and the chance to set up a quarter-final meeting with Roma or Athletic Bilbao.

I'm sure Rangers fans are well aware of that, but I think they are allowed to celebrate a little bit. Otherwise what's the point?

  7. 'My only advice, calm down'published at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

    Fenerbahce 1-3 Rangers

    Jose gonna Jose.

Mourinho told Rangers fans to "calm down" and not get carried away with the result.

"For me, I have to say that we deserved a punishment of this result," he said. "But if someone wants to ask me if it's over, no, I don't think it's over.

"The only thing I tell this is don't celebrate too much, because there is a second match to play, that's my only advice.

"If they celebrate after the second match I will congratulate them but now calm down because it's not over."

Was he going to say anything else?

  9. Gers stun Fenerbahcepublished at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

    Fenerbahce 1-3 Rangers

Let's start in Istanbul and a fine performance from Rangers, who beat Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce to give themselves a great chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Cyriel Dessers forced home an early opener for Barry Ferguson's side before Alexander Djik's stunning volley brought Fenerbahce level.

But Rangers went ahead again before half-time, Dessers turning provider this time to set up Vaclav Cerny

The impressive Dessers had two goals disallowed for offside in the second half, before Cerny did extend Rangers' lead and cap a wonderful night for the Scottish Premiership side.
