Aston Villa boss Unai Emery: "Our expectation is to get a good result of the second leg. Of course the fact that they won 3-1 is changing something. But a lot? No. Why? Because we have to win. We had to win with 2-1 and with 3-1 now. But now, we have to win with one more goal."

  4. What happened in the first leg?published at 13:29 British Summer Time 14 April

Aston Villa v PSG (Tue 20:00 BST, 1-3 agg)

Aston Villa thought they would only have a one-goal deficit to overturn in their Champions League quarter-final tie against Paris St-Germain.

But Nuno Mendes struck deep into stoppage time in the first leg in Paris to give Unai Emery's former side a significant advantage against Villa as they fight for a place in the semi-finals.

The Premier League side had stunned the French champions when Morgan Rogers arrived at the far post to turn in Youri Tielemans' cross from the left after 35 minutes.

The lead only lasted four minutes before PSG drew level, however, with Desire Doue leaving Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez helpless with a magnificent curling drive from 20 yards.

PSG's brilliant Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia troubled Villa all night, and he put them ahead four minutes after the break when he turned substitute Axel Disasi before drilling a powerful shot high past Martinez at his near post.

It feels near one of our greatest teams in my memory, up there with Keegan’s Entertainers and Bobby Robson’s team. As Bri says, Tonali has turned our midfield into something phenomenal and helped everyone else slot into place. For Tonali to turn the defender like he did yesterday as a second striker was exceptional. It is in Newcastle’s own hands to qualify for the Champions League now. Starting with Wednesday v Palace. If we win that we’ll be well set to come near the top of this tight pack down to Villa in seventh. Lose v Palace and we’re right in the scrum for places.

Some people say 'confidence is a hell of a drug' and that is what Newcastle have right now.

Since winning the cup, I felt like they were going to kick on to another level and that is what we are seeing performance wise.

They have Alexander Isak, one of the hottest strikers in the world right now, but they have a core strength in their midfield.

You struggle to find a better balanced midfield than Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton when you combine all of their talents and attributes. They can win the ball, control the game, score and be physical, so they have everything.

You can tell they are confident as a team and as a group of individuals.

I wouldn’t say this is our best ever squad. But I would say it’s our best ever coach. We have a great team, but we do not have the quality of players of the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal or Man City… YET! But Howe understands personalities, Loyalty and hard work more than any of his rivalries. Praying he will get well soon.

  12. 'They definitely played for Howe'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 14 April

    Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Football Daily podcast

"Newcastle United have been relentless and they have done it without key players as well. They might have had no Anthony Gordon, but Harvey Barnes has stepped up in his absence and that is because everyone in the squad knows what they are doing.

"Jacob Murphy has been a revelation and even Isak, who has started to look tired, is still delivering.

"It's a big result for them against Manchester United and they definitely did play for their manager Eddie Howe, who we know is in hospital, and they are flying.

"Over the years United against Newcastle has been a really tight game, and I know United are not in good form, but Newcastle blew them away. Most importantly, they are in a great position to finish in a Champions League spot this season."

Assistant manager Jason Tindall was in charge of Newcastle United for their 4-1 victory against Manchester United in Eddie Howe's absence.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the win, Tindall said the Magpies "delivered a performance Howe would be proud of."

"Me and Eddie have worked together for 17 years, and in that time he's never missed more than a day or two, so he must have found it hard to be missing this week," Tindall said.

"All those years people have criticised me for being up at the front with Eddie... maybe that helped today!

"We went out and delivered a performance he would be proud of. Hopefully he is back very soon.

"Amongst our pressing was some fantastic football and some good goals."

Conspicuous by his absence from the win against Manchester United was Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who was admitted to hospital on Friday having felt unwell for a number of days.

Newcastle have a midweek Premier League match to look forward to as they face Crystal Palace on Wednesday night at St James' Park.

There is a pre-match news conference scheduled for 09:30 BST. We are yet to find out whether manager Eddie Howe or assistant manager Jason Tindall will be conducting that.

Speaking on Howe, who missed Sunday's win over Manchester United, Tindall said he hopes Howe will be back soon.

Tindall, speaking to BBC Match of the Day, said: "We went out and delivered a performance he would be proud of. Hopefully he is back very soon."

Tonali's been the missing piece, turned us from plucky losers to ruthless winners. Lots of unsung heroes though, Tino and Barnes have been absolutely fantastic since coming in down the left, really given Eddie a problem. Burn's gone from a left-back anyone with pace could get at to one of the best centre halves in the league, and Murphy is in the form of his life. But as a Toon fan for 50 years, it'll obviously all go pear-shaped soon!

Harvey Barnes was the star for Newcastle on Sunday and the winger says he is playing with a smile on his face after his double against Manchester United.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the win, Barnes said: "It's been a weird week without the gaffer [Eddie Howe] being in, we spoke about winning the game and hopefully putting a smile on his face. We know he wouldn't be missing games if he wasn't seriously ill.

"The work we do week-to-week - we repeat stuff, it's repetitive, so we know our roles. We went into the game knowing exactly what we needed to do. It's just his voice and influence that hasn't been there this week.

"I'm playing with a smile on my face at the minute, enjoying being out there. I love playing football, love scoring goals, when you do that you can't help but enjoy it. That was reflected in the team as well. It was a good day at the office."

Most important stat from yesterday: Newcastle 4th, game in hand and still to play Arsenal who we've already beaten three times this season. Second place is unlikely but possible.

Newcastle secured their first league double over Manchester United since 1930-31 on Sunday.

It was also the first time they netted four goals in a Premier League game against the Red Devils for the first time since September 2001 (4-3).

A Harvey Barnes double and goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes helped the Magpies get another win to move into fourth place.

Barnes is only the second Newcastle player to score a brace against United in the Premier League, along with Alan Shearer in December 2000.

After their impressive win against Manchester United, Newcastle have now won 12 of their last 16 Premier League games - a run which began with a 4-0 win over Leicester on 14 December.

Since then, only Liverpool (41 points) have won more points in the league than Newcastle (36 points).

But Arne Slot's league leaders have played two more games than the Magpies during this period.

Newcastle, not to forget, also won the EFL Cup beating Slot's side 2-1 in last month's final.

They have picked the exact same starting XI for each of their last five games in all competitions, winning all five of those matches, starting with a 1-0 win against West Ham in the Premier League last month.

Premier League results since 14 December:

    Liverpool (1st)

    • Games played: 18
    • Won: 12
    • Drawn: 5
    • Lost: 1
    • Points: 41

    Newcastle United (4th)

    • Games played: 16
    • Won: 12
    • Drawn: 0
    • Lost: 4
    • Points: 36
