From an outsider's perspective, I consider Man Utd to be the prime example of all that is wrong with modern football. They were hijacked as a business asset and are less a football club and more a commercial brand now. It’s not unlikely the footballing identity of this business and thus the fans will suffer in this circumstance. Others will have their time.

  3. League positions of the sides Man Utd have beatenpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 14 April

    Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd

When you look at the league position of where Manchester United's six wins have come from, it paints a picture of how they have struggled against the better-ranked sides.

Three of the wins have been against the current bottom three in Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton, who are all expected to go down.

Fulham (8th) and Manchester City (5th) are the only teams in the top half that United have beaten in the Premier League under Amorim.

  4. Timeline of Amorim's six Premier League winspublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 14 April

Manchester United's Premier League record under Ruben Amorim is underwhelming, to say the least.

The former Sporting boss has led United to just six wins in his 21 matches in charge, losing 10 of those games and drawing five.

United average 1.10 points per game under Amorim in the English top flight, at a win ratio of 29%.

Of the sides United have beaten in the Premier League under the Portuguese manager, only rivals Manchester City and Fulham were in the top half of the table:

    • 01 Dec: Man Utd 4-0 Everton
    • 15 Dec: Man City 1-2 Man Utd
    • 16 Jan: Man Utd 3-1 Southampton
    • 26 Jan: Fulham 0-1 Man Utd
    • 26 Feb: Man Utd 3-2 Ipswich
    • 16 Mar: Leicester 0-3 Man Utd

Where to start with Man Utd? The club seems to be an utter shambles from every angle. Over paid players that seem to have no fight, desire, sense of club history... just happy to pocket the big wages. Then we look at the owners making ridiculous claims that the way to save their financial predicament is to lay off catering staff... people who have worked at the club for 20+ years or more in some cases. SJR can make claims about it needing to be done, but ordinary people are not that stupid. As for ticket prices? The loyal fans that are supposed to 'live through the pain' must be seething underneath. I think Eric probably hit exactly the right tone when he talked about the club being destroyed. I'm not a Man U fan, but I appreciate and respect their place in British football history. But, at the moment, the club is a shadow of its former self.

    Just joining us?

Do not worry as we have got you covered.

Here's a recap of everything we have talked about this morning...

    But there's more to come...

As well as more chat on United, we will soon look at how the win has boosted Newcastle's Champions League hopes while also dissecting another dismal Tottenham performance - a 4-2 defeat at Wolves.

And we will also hear from Aston Villa manager Unai Emery who will speak to the media after 13:30 BST before Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris St-Germain.

Anyone trying to convince themselves that United's position isn't due to the Glazers is frankly ill informed. The rot starts at the top and has for two decades. This is the symptom. Give us our billions back and let's get back to the top (will take a while).

They are backing him to bring in these players, but what happens if it comes out that he's not good enough to manage Manchester United or a club at this level? Does that mean the next manager has to believe in his philosophy and play the same formation?

If you work so hard to bring in players to play this specific system, then does the next manager have to believe in the same? Because otherwise they are back in the same vicious circle.

They are a million miles away from mounting a Premier League challenge. Maybe four or five years away and that shows just how bad they are.

Their recruitment has been nowhere near good enough and Amorim might want to bring in his players in the summer but they also need to get rid of a lot. But no players want to leave the football club because they have brought players in on big money.

Those players will sit there and they have the right to do so because they have been given big contracts.

Amorim has come in and he has wanted to change so much. He's started by playing his formation and style of play, but then says he hasn't got the players to do it. They would have been better off with Erik ten Hag and that is saying something!

Amorim comes out to the media - and speaks ever so well - but Manchester United fans don't want to hear him talking about how they are not good enough. He has been brought into the club to deliver and it feels like the mentality at the club is all wrong at the moment.

RE: Ian 08:37 - I'd love him to give youth a chance. It is the United way. It feels like a no-brainer with the league being well and truly over, but it just doesn't seem like the sort of thing Amorim would do. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Despite being a prickly character who is tricky to warm to, there is no questioning the ability of Bruno Fernandes. If he wants to lift major trophies he needs to get out of Old Trafford while still in his prime.

We keep making excuses for this Man United team. There aren't enough players that can run in this team, I think there are players that don't want to run.

Newcastle were outstanding. I think United now are physically and mentally a weak team. Newcastle were too fast, too powerful, they were more determined and they got what they deserved.

Well done Newcastle, they were outstanding but United, there was talk before the game that things were getting better for this United team but I can't see it. I worry for this group of players. To me, they do not look like a strong group mentally.

Consistency is key for Man Utd and that starts with Sir Jim! It was a shambolic start to the season backing, then sacking Hag, the farce with Ashworth, and the redundancies didn’t exactly get the fans on his side. They only need CL for the money, but in reality could do with a season out of Europe to focus on their priorities and rebuild.

I am still so amazed by how easy it is for Ruben Amorim to say a few things and people praise him for being honest and say he is great.

I thought Manchester United were built around winning? That was their culture and it made the club so great.

But now I am getting bored because still to this day, don't see any progression whatsoever. I can't say I see light at the end of the tunnel.

Amorim brought in Patrick Dorgu - has he come in and made an impact? No. Then there is the changing of centre-backs in games, so I don't see any progression.

I don't understand what Amorim is trying to do and I think he is getting away with so much because these results just aren't good enough.

Sir Alex Ferguson had 810 games as the Manchester United manager and only 114 of those ended in defeat. Since he's left, United have 115 defeats in 450 games. So they have had more defeats now than when Ferguson was at the club for over 20 years.

Sunday's disappointment at Newcastle means Manchester United have now lost more Premier League games since Sir Alex Ferguson retired than during his time in charge of the club.

Since then, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag all had stints at the club before Ruben Amorim took charge in November 2024.

    Under Sir Alex:

    • 810 games
    • 114 defeats

    Since Sir Alex left:

    • 450 games
    • 115 defeats

Though Altay Bayindir failed to impress in his first Premier League start, former England keeper Paul Robinson expects to see him again in the Manchester United goal when they take on Lyon on Thursday.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Robinson said Onana's spell on the sidelines could continue.

"I don't think he's going to play [against Lyon]," said the former Tottenham goalkeeper.

"You don't take him out for just one game, put him in a few days later and expect him to be on top of his game. I don't expect to see him play on Thursday."

United's only chance of making it to next season's Champions League is by winning the Europa League but they take on Lyon in this week's return leg after a 2-2 draw in the away first leg.

  18. How did Bayindir do against Newcastle?published at 09:56 British Summer Time 14 April

Altay Bayindir was making his first Premier League start of his career at Newcastle.

But the Turkish goalkeeper, who signed from Fenerbahce in 2023, did not have the best of league debuts for the Red Devils.

The 27-year-old conceded with the first shot he faced as Sandro Tonali opened the scoring in the 24th minute.

In total, he faced six shots on target from the Magpies and made just two saves.

Of the three clearances the keeper made, one was clipped straight to Joelinton, who set up Bruno Guimaraes to make it 4-1 to Newcastle.

Bayindir also attempted 57 passes on Sunday, the most by a goalkeeper on their first Premier League start on record since 2003-04. But he only completed 27 of those pass attempts (47.4%).

  19. 'You’ve got both of your goalkeepers at Man Utd low on confidence'published at 09:49 British Summer Time 14 April

    FT: Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd

I think how Amorim has handled this whole [goalkeeper] situation is so bad and maybe some people might think ‘take Onana out of the firing line’ but sometimes that’s the worst thing you can do for a player.

You’ve got to let him go through that ring of fire and I think for me he should have played because you look at the goalkeeper today, yeah he’s let in four goals but there was one specific goal that was troubling - the fourth one when he’s trying to play out from the back and loses it. It’s very similar to what Onana has done, I think that’s going to be the one that’s more impactful than the three before.

Teams watching that are going to play on that so what do you do now when you’ve got both of your goalkeepers at Manchester United low on confidence and not really in any kind of belief.

  20. Numbers behind Onana's Man Utd careerpublished at 09:42 British Summer Time 14 April

    Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd

Andre Onana's goalkeeping stats graphicsImage source, BBC Sport

Andre Onana has made 3.4 saves per 90 minutes since joining Manchester United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.

That puts him at the top among goalkeepers who have played 900 minutes or more for United since the 2003-04 season, bettering David de Gea (2.8) and even Edwin van der Sar (2.5).

However, the Cameroonian has the lowest number of minutes per goal conceded of all United goalkeepers in the Premier League - conceding a goal every 63 minutes on average.

Anders Lindegaard was next on the list, every 81 minutes; David de Gea every 84 minutes, Peter Schmeichel every 106 minutes, Edwin van der Sar every 117 minutes and top of the list was Roy Carroll, who conceded every 152 minutes.

But in Onana's defence, he is playing in a United team now sitting 14th in the Premier League table with manager Ruben Amorim billing them as "maybe the worst" in the club's 147-year history in January.
