  1. Why was Onana left out of Newcastle trip?published at 09:35 British Summer Time 14 April

Ruben Amorim decided to leave out Andre Onana for the trip to Newcastle after the goalkeeper's shaky display at the midweek.

Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals in the 2-2 draw in Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg.

It came only a day after he was called "one of the worst goalkeepers" in United's history by former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Turkey international Altay Bayindir deputisd for Onana at Newcastle in only his sixth appearance of the season and his first in Premier League while 38-year-old Tom Heaton was on the bench.

But it was an experiment that ultimately backfired for Amorim as Bayindir conceded four goals at St James' Park and was to blame for Newcastle's fourth after a poor pass.

Newcastle are in the driving seat for a Champions League spot now. They have got good options off the bench. Their attacking players have been on fire. This is where you find out about your squads.

Newcastle have got used to winning big matches. I think they will deal with the pressure and I think they have a great chance now. They are in the driving seat.

What a season Newcastle United are having. It's a massive result for them.

But where do Man Utd go? They have to finish the season strongly, in my opinion. For Ruben Amorim to start next season, he has to have a bit of faith from the fan base but if they keep losing and playing the way they're playing then the pressure really will be on.

The only positives I can take from that United match are: Fernandes once again looks good, he just needs everyone else to step up, Yoro and Amass looked tidy, Shaw played and did not get injured, Mount played and did not get injured. Otherwise, just a rotten club. We say it every season, but we really need to clear out the mess and start fresh next season. I can only hope that, unlike his predecessors, Amorim manages to implement some form of improvement next year. I almost hope we don't win Europa this season (not that it's likely), as I fear our showing in the Champions League next season would come with the Benny Hill theme tune.

To be fair to Bruno Fernandes he fronts up but to me it's just soundbites now.

He was talking about his team-mates and belief but what about his right-back Dalot who didn't put a leg out to tackle? I hope he is pulling him in the dressing room because he keeps talking about having belief in his teammates but real good teammates put demands on each other.

When I listen to Bruno, I have question marks about his leadership. He certainly isn't getting any help around him, it must be tough playing in that midfield when the expectation is on him because that's unfair on him. But when he's doing his chats about supporters and this, to me it's just soundbites. There is no meaning to it. I'm not sure this United group are an honest group.

The best players put demands on me. That's what real good teammates do. These aren't teammates, they are bluffers.

Only Southampton (19) and Aston Villa (13) have made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season than Manchester United (12), who made two against Newcastle on Sunday.

United have gone 1-0 down in 19 league games this season with only Leicester (27), Southampton (21) and Wolves (20) doing so more often. It’s also the joint most games the Red Devils have conceded first in in a single Premier League campaign alongside 2013-14.

Since Ruben Amorim's first game in charge, only Southampton (59), Tottenham (53) and Leicester (53) have shipped more goals in all competitions than United (48).

United’s 14 league defeats this season is their joint highest tally in a single Premier League campaign, also losing 14 games last season. The Red Devils last suffered more defeats in a top-flight campaign in 1989-90 (16 in 38 games).

Man Utd should use the remainder of the season to give their youngsters game time. The squad needs a complete rebuild, and they won't be able to afford that without using some of the young talent they already have.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said there is "nothing worse than losing games" when asked about the criticism he has received since taking charge at Old Trafford.

"I understand but I don't care. Nothing is worse than losing games," Amorim said after the defeat by Newcastle.

"People can say whatever they want to say. I don't want to defend myself or anything like that.

"If you look at our position in the table, it says it all. Thursday is really important. Losing games is the hardest part by far of this job. Let's focus on Thursday."

Dissecting last night's defeat, the Portuguese said: "Many mistakes. Newcastle were stronger in second balls. We did a lot of mistakes that made it harder to win a game. That's all.

"It's a little bit of everything. it's hard to point to one thing. It's really hard to win against these top teams like Newcastle. When we make mistakes to help the opponent it's even harder. Let's focus on Thursday."

On Thursday, United will hosts Lyon in the return leg of their Europa League quarter-final, which remains finely in the balance after a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

"Of course it's really important. We have a chance to get Champions League. It's an important game," Amorim said.

"It will be really hard. We have to focus on that and get to the next stage. We have a season a lot like that with difficult losses. We are used to getting up. Let's do that Thursday. It's a different game. We need to give something to our fans and to go to the next stage."

  11. How many points will Man Utd finish on?published at 08:23 British Summer Time 14 April

Manchester United are currently on 38 points from 32 games in the Premier League this season.

That works out at a rate of 1.19 points per game.

If they perform at that rate for the remainder of the season, United would finish on 45 points.

In the 20-team Premier League era, no team has ever been relegated with 43 or more points.

Four teams have gone down with 43 or more, but all four were in the first three seasons of the Premier League, when it was a 22-team competition.

Can we just put into clear perspective: Man Utd are likely to end up 4th worst team in the Premier League - in most other seasons would be relegated. Can United fans stop only blaming the Glazers who for all their faults have allowed United to spend more than any other club in last 10 years and stop making excuses and talking about rebuilds. This is a poor club now top to bottom.

Prior to yesterday's game, there was an outside chance Manchester United could qualify for Europe (the Conference League admittedly) through their Premier League placing.

But head coach Ruben Amorim, understandably, took a calculated risk to leave a number of players out of his starting line-up at Newcastle to ensure they were fresh for Thursday's Europa League return against Lyon at Old Trafford.

Casemiro, Patrick Dorgu and Harry Maguire will surely start against the French side - and after Altay Bayindir's performance at St James' Park, I am guessing Andre Onana will also.

If United win the Europa League, it will secure a place in the Champions League.

Newcastle United's defeat over Manchester United moves them another step closer to a place in next season's Champions League.

The Magpies are now fourth, only one point behind Nottingham Forest above them and have a game in hand.

But Eddie Howe's side cannot afford to take their foot of the gas, as Manchester City are only one point behind them.,

Chelsea and Aston Villa, meanwhile, are tied on 54 points with six games remaining of the season.

England will have not four, but five teams in the Champions League next season, so we have an exciting final weeks of the season coming up, at least when it comes to the race for Europe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers moved closer to Premier League safety and heaped more misery on Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou with victory at Molineux.

Postecoglou made six changes to the Spurs side that drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League quarter-final first-leg tie, before a second meeting on Thursday that could shape his future.

And Wolves cashed in with a crucial win that moved them up to 16th place and 14 points clear of the bottom three with six games left.

Vitor Pereira's side were on the way to a fourth straight top-flight victory for the first time since January 1972 inside two minutes when Rayan Ait-Nouri scored after latching on to Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario's punched clearance on the edge of the area.

Wolves doubled their advantage seven minutes before half-time in a moment of high farce, with keeper Vicario pushing Marshall Munetsi's header on to backtracking defender Djed Spence and into his own net.

Spurs pulled one back just before the hour mark when Mathys Tel bundled home at the far post after Wolves defender Nelson Semedo made a mess of clearing Brennan Johnson's cross.

But Wolves restored their two-goal lead five minutes later when the excellent Ait-Nouri beat Cristian Romero far too easily before crossing for Jorgen Strand Larsen to complete the formalities with a simple finish and scoring for a fourth successive game.

Substitute Richarlison gave Spurs brief hope four minutes from time when he bundled home after Wolves keeper Jose Sa touched Romero's header on to the bar.

But there was more drama as substitute Matheus Cunha, on for Ait-Nouri after serving a four-match suspension, confirmed 15th-placed Tottenham's 17th league loss this season when Lucas Bergvall lost possession and the Brazilian raced clear and finished calmly.

Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dented with the Blues held to a 2-2 draw against Ipswich at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Chelsea's early dominance, it was Ipswich who took the lead when on-loan Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso poked home Ben Johnson's cross to score his first goal for the club.

Enciso turned provider for Ipswich's second, chipping a brilliant ball to the back post for Johnson to head in his first goal of the season and give the visitors a two-goal lead at the break.

An Axel Tuanzebe own goal 20 seconds into the second half reduced the deficit, but Chelsea had to wait until ten minutes from time to find an equaliser when substitute Jadon Sancho curled a wonderful effort into the top corner from a short-corner routine.

Trevor Chalobah and Pedro Neto both went close for Chelsea but the draw leaves the Blues in fifth, three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest and ahead of sixth-placed Aston Villa on goal difference.

Ipswich are 14 points adrift from safety following Wolves' win against Tottenham at Molineux.

Liverpool moved to potentially one win from the Premier League title as captain Virgil van Dijk's late header helped them beat West Ham United at Anfield.

Victory means that if Arsenal lose at Ipswich next weekend, the Reds can wrap up the title by beating Leicester.

Mohamed Salah, who signed a new two-year contract at Liverpool this week, provided the assist with a splendid pass for Luis Diaz to open the scoring on 18 minutes.

But Liverpool failed to build on this and West Ham deservedly equalised when Andy Robertson turned the ball into his own net.

However, in the 90th minute Van Dijk - who is expected to join Salah in agreeing a new deal to stay with the club - rose highest to head home a corner and put Liverpool 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with just six league games to play.
