There was a concern for Manchester City ahead of Sunday’s vital league meeting with Arsenal at Etihad Stadium with Kevin de Bruyne unable to come out for the second half after picking up an injury late in the first period.

Pep Guardiola will hope this was a minor knock and his removal precautionary as he will not want to lose the Belgian’s influence for a game of such significance.

City did have the consolation of the return of Phil Foden after illness, looking sharp and almost making the breakthrough only to be denied by the excellent Sommer.

Even Erling Haaland, with nine goals in his first four Premier League games this season, was unable to breach Inter’s defence as he was well shackled, almost literally on occasions as he complained to the referee about the manner in which he was constantly manhandled.

It was a night when City, unusually for them, could not make the breakthrough but it is unlikely to cause any lingering damage to their Champions League aspirations.

You have to pay massive respect to Inter for this result. You can’t just say City missed two massive opportunities to win at the end, because Inter missed big chances as well.

Inter were superbly organised at the back and I thought Nicolo Barella was instrumental in how good they were in both defence and attack. He slipped into defence to cover when their centre-halves stepped up or City attacked, but he also had the energy to get forward himself and bring his team forward.

Nicolo Barella is one of the best midfielders in Europe at 27.

That's what Simone Inzaghi has done with Barella since he joined the club. There is nothing that he can't do, recovering the ball, being around his box, cutting passes from the opposition, tackling and then being on the front foot to create something on the pitch.

Those players are really rare. He can do everything and he has got plenty of years ahead of him and he was club captain tonight.

  4. 'Simone Inzaghi will be pleased'published at 23:25 British Summer Time 18 September

Italian football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

We saw how good a football team this Inter side are; they are able to defend when they need to, to pass out when they need to as well. They can break on you and are very brave both with the ball and positionally where they dared to pass.

To be able to come away with a point when you are missing your left back in Federico Dimarco and your top striker starts on the bench, I think Simone Inzaghi will be quite pleased.

  5. 'A lot of margin to progress from our side'published at 23:22 British Summer Time 18 September

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, speaking to TNT Sports: "Very intense game against a very strong opponent. We knew what was coming, they are a strong team as well, they are used to winning. We knew we weren't going to have an easy job. In the end the team had a great performance and we were very close to scoring. We take it and we obviously we move forward. It was a good chance for us to play against such a strong side."

On Ilkay Gundogan chances: "Gundo had two, Phil [Foden] as well and some others that came up but especially these three. It happens and it's football but we're ready for what's next."

On trying to prevent Inter's counter attacks: "We know they can be dangerous in many different scenarios .They have people that know how to keep the ball very well. We know them very well since the final we played against them. We know the different ways they can hurt us but in the end we are who we are, we play the way that we play and we deal with it."

On keeping a clean sheet: "These are the ones we loves. These ones make it mean more in terms of keeping a clean sheet so obviously we are happy with the work we did at the back."

On reaching their peak: "The season just started. It's very early stages, we know what we are as a team. Today we played on a very good level. We ended up scoring, we could have but that is football. Obviously there is a lot of margin to progress from our side."

  6. 'We played so good, I'm really pleased'published at 23:18 British Summer Time 18 September

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "We played so good, I love my team, we are a fantastic team. Inter are a team who defend really, really well so they are masters of defending and transitionally very strong as well. You cannot expect to make many chances when a team defends so, so deep. I'm really pleased for the performance we have done.

"This is the beginning of the season, Phil [Foden] it's his first game for two months, [Ilkay] Gundogan arrived, the players with more time will be better."

What did he like about the performance: "Everything, absolutely everything."

On the change he made to prevent Inter's counter attack: "When you lose easy balls it is a counter attack, it's impossible to stop it. You have to be more precise. It happened, especially on the left side. You cannot control it."

On how Rodri played: "He played really good, always Rodri plays good."

On why he brought Phil Foden on: "Players in the smaller space have the ability to turn, make the small turn and attack the back five. He moves really well in small spaces. When the team defends so so deep these players are really good at moving in small spaces."

On how Kevin de Bruyne is: "I haven't spoke with the doctors with and I will speak maybe later."

On how helpful it is to get minutes into Foden and Gundogan before playing Arsenal: "Yes, but we'll have more players there so we'll see. It's important to have minutes but they'll get minutes anyway with the amount of games we get."

  7. 'Tonight a night to credit Inzaghi and Inter'published at 23:15 British Summer Time 18 September

    Joe Hart
Former England & Man City goalkeeper on Champions League Match of the Day

There will not be panic from City, not at all. Tonight is a night to credit Simone Inzaghi and his Inter team. it was an incredible tactical performance. Everything had to be right and you could see that in how edgy he was [on the touchline]. His team really performed.

  8. 'Barella was man of the match'published at 23:12 British Summer Time 18 September

Inter were superb in the way they set themselves up. They played with a 5-3-2 system.

Nicolo Barella was the man of the match, he was at the heart of everything good. What a performance that was away from home at the Etihad.

  9. 'Inter did a job on Man City'published at 23:10 British Summer Time 18 September

We normally associate Pep Guardiola's teams as quick, slick and incisive but it wasn't there tonight. It was a bit slow and ponderous.

This Inter team set up well and defended deep, they are well organised and street-wise and did a job on Man City tonight. They a really handy outfit.

Three wins, three of the four games at home for example. Today, Young Boys, RB Leipzig, Dinamo Zagreb away.

15 points could get you there. Four home games and a draw here and there could be enough to reach the play-off round.

Pep Guardiola was starting his run down the touchline as Ilkay Gundogan launched himself at the ball in the closing seconds.

The Manchester City boss turned and gave a wry smile in the direction of Simone Inzaghi when the ball went sailing over the bar.

A draw was probably a fair result. Inter were excellent for an hour. City dominated the latter stages.

And Matteo Darmian's team-mates will wonder why he didn't shoot.

  15. 'Everyone had great fun'published at 22:49 British Summer Time 18 September

Celtic captain Callum McGregor told TNT Sports: "Everyone had great fun. We started the game well, got our goal and both teams were feeling each other out. We felt we'd done well at half-time but thought we had levels to go. Our start to the second half was outstanding.

"This is the next level for the group in terms of growth and development. We always felt like it was important to start well. Bratislava are a good team but the supporters came here full of belief. We had to deliver and we did."

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has just been in to conduct his post-match press conference.

He was asked about Matteo Darmian failing to shoot when he had a clear opportunity in the second half.

"I asked him 'what were you playing at?" said Inzaghi.

"He said 'I could hear Barella behind me'."

That doesn't really explain why he would pass. Barella was in a worse position.
