Toni Duggan's journey began at Everton when she broke into the first team as a 16-year-old, and she would go on to represent Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, before returning to Merseyside to finish her career.

She was a key player for England and says it was like "the Lionesses were born" after the 2015 Women's World Cup, when they won bronze.

"Honestly, playing for England were the best days of my life. I just loved it. I loved travelling with the team and having the laughs we had," said Duggan.

"I think I was [aware of my profile]. It grew. The catalyst for it was the Women’s World Cup in Canada. We’ve never really looked back since.

"I was so proud to be part of that team. We didn’t come away with the gold medal but we definitely changed the perception of women’s football."

Since then, investment has grown and the Lionesses have delivered, winning Euro 2022 and reaching the Women's World Cup final in 2023.

Duggan is proud her generation were "a part of all the firsts".

  7. Bournemouth looking to buy clubs in Portugalpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 18 September

Bournemouth owner Bill Foley is looking to purchase a club in Portugal to add to his Black Knight multi-club group, amid talks with Lisbon club Casa Pia.

Negotiations with the Lisbon club remain at an early stage as alternative clubs are considered.

And the Portuguese top flight outfit also have interest from other US-based investors.

But they are attractive as Portugal and particularly Lisbon is a hotbed of domestic talent, with the league becoming an important first step for South American talent when coming to Europe.

Foley, 79, is the lead investor in Black Knight Sports and Entertainment consortium which begun building a City Football Group-like model, pioneer by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi-based owners, to be competitive within football.

The group first bought National Hockey League franchise Vegas Golden Knights before moving into football with AFC Bournemouth in 2022.

They have since purchased a minority stakes in French Ligue 1 club Lorient and Scottish Premiership Hibernian while also owning Auckland FC.

In an interview with BBC Sport in the US this summer, Foley said of his plans: “I believe it is realistic because we are putting a great team together, with a lot of younger players.

“We are trying to be careful with how we do this. We have a multi-club strategy so we promote players from Club A to Club B to Club C to Club D. We now have four clubs, and we are about to acquire a controlling interest in another club. It is all designed to give the players a path to the Premier League.

“If we can do that, we should be able to be competitive and not have to kill ourselves financially. We are not a sovereign wealth fund or private equity. We are just simple little guys from America who came over and bought a team.”

Tiago Lopes, Casa Pia’s CEO, said at the Thinking Football Summit in Porto that current US-based owner Rob Platek, who bought the club in 2019, wants to remain part of the club, adding: “Certainly in the coming weeks, there will be news in this regard, we're not looking for an investment, we are looking to strengthen our group of partners. The most important thing is that the profile that will strengthen our project is very much in line with what Casa Pia has been doing in recent years."

Such a shame, Italia 90 probably the best World Cup in my lifetime and I am 51! Milla, Gascoigne, Schillaci are the 1st 3 things I think of. One of the rare players to have a more distinguished career for his country rather than his club football. RIP Toto x

In a club statement, external, Juventus, who Toto Schillachi played for from 1989-1992 said: "We immediately fell in love with Toto.

"His desire, his story, his being so wonderfully passionate, and it showed in every game he played.

"We at Juve were lucky enough to get excited about him before, in that incredible summer of 1990, the whole of Italy did, captivated by those wonderfully energetic celebrations of his.

"Because Toto arrived at Juve in 1989, and in that season he scored 15 goals in the league, four in the UEFA Cup and two in the Coppa Italia. Numbers that earned him the Azzurri shirt in the Italian World Cup, which - also thanks to him - became what we all remember as those ‘Magical Nights’.

"Top scorer in the competition and, with the national team, third, for an immense collective dream only stopped by those penalty kicks in Naples.

"His Juventus story went on for another two years, until 1992, making 132 appearances and scoring 36 goals - thirty-six of those magnificent strikes that we now watch over with a lump in our throats.

    "Ciao, Toto. Thank you."
