Former England forward Toni Duggan says her career has been "more than I could ever have dreamed of" as she announces her retirement from football.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed an incredible career spanning 17 years, amassing 79 caps for her country, as well as playing for some of the world's biggest clubs.

She has played in World Cup semi-finals, Champions League finals and the biggest cup finals in the domestic game.

Football is all she has ever known.

"I saw an old interview. I was 27 and playing in Spain at the time. They asked 'what is your biggest fear?' - and I said 'retirement'," Duggan told BBC Sport.

"It is weird now, sitting here, and today is the day. I’ve been so lucky with the career I’ve had and I’ve loved every single minute.

"I just think it’s made me the person I am. I was a little girl who grew up on the streets of Liverpool who wanted to play football. I wanted to be accepted.

"We had to fight for everything we wanted but when I look back, the journey has just been more than I could ever have dreamed of.

"To everyone who has played their part – family, friends, coaches and everyone involved – thank you."

Bayern Munich's Harry Kane scored four goals to become England's top scorer in Champions League or European Cup history in a demolition of Dinamo Zagreb.

Kane's fourth - his third penalty of the game - was his 33rd Champions League goal as he passed Wayne Rooney's old record of 30.

The quadruple also marked his 50th, 51st, 52nd and 53rd Bayern goals in just 50 games for the club.

Another London-born player, France winger Michael Olise, scored twice on his Champions League debut.

Bayern Munich are the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League game.

Aston Villa marked their return to European football’s top club competition after a 41-year absence with a thoroughly deserved victory over Swiss champions Young Boys.

Unai Emery’s team took time to settle on the artificial surface in Bern but went in front through Youri Tielemans, who finished off a well-worked corner routine with a driven finish into the far corner.

Villa were gifted a second by some calamitous defending from the home side, with Ollie Watkins intercepting Mohamed Ali Camara’s pass towards goalkeeper David von Ballmoos and Jacob Ramsey firing in off the inside of the post.

The hosts were spared further punishment before half-time by the video assistant referee (VAR), who disallowed Watkins' powerful effort for handball.

Liverpool claimed an assured victory at AC Milan on their Champions League return to firmly bounce back from Saturday's shock defeat by Nottingham Forest.

The Reds were stunned on the break inside three minutes when AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic found the net with a driven strike across goal.

But Arne Slot's side responded with a dominant performance and, after Mohamed Salah hit the bar, defender Ibrahima Konate levelled with a stooping 23rd-minute header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick.

Salah struck the bar again before Virgil van Dijk completed the turnaround shortly before half-time when he met Konstantinos Tsimikas' corner with a close-range header.

The win was wrapped up in the 67th minute when Cody Gakpo ended an electric run by squaring the ball to Dominik Szoboszlai for a tap-in.

Liverpool also gave a brief debut to summer signing Federico Chiesa who replaced Salah in the 93rd minute.

  8. Players and managers speak outpublished at 07:19 British Summer Time 18 September

Rodri’s comments come less than 24 hours after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson spoke out against the changes in schedule.

City defender Manuel Akanji recently suggested that because of the increased schedule, he would have to retire when he is 30 due to the lack of breaks during the season.

And Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said the club are considering giving their players holidays during the season in order to combat the increase in fixtures.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri says players are close to going on strike in protest at an increase in games.

City face Inter Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League, with a new format adding at least two extra games before the knockout stage.

The Club World Cup - which Pep Guardiola's side are also involved in - has also expanded to 32 teams and will be held next summer.

"I think we are close to that," said Rodri when asked whether players will strike.

"If it keeps this way, it will be a moment that we have no other option, but let's see."

The new Champions League and Club World Cup formats mean City will play at least four extra matches compared to last season's guaranteed fixtures.

They played just two games to win the Club World Cup in December, but next summer would need to play three group games and four knockout matches if they were to go all the way.

Across the past two full seasons, City played 120 times across all competitions.
