@ Steve - 09:17 - I don’t think Slot was disrespecting Forest, just pointing out how dominate Liverpool were in Milan compared to Forest! If Liverpool can run riot against Milan, why didn’t they do the same against Forest?

After the defeat [1-0 to Nottingham Forest] - I think it was an unnecessary defeat - especially if you see the way they played against Milan, they never should have lost that game against Nottingham.

They are in a good form, everything is going well, it was just one of those days I think.

Yesterday, it was a display of the potential of the squad.

Going down 1-0 then still having the mentality of being so dominant, so strong and then, coming back in a difficult stadium.

Liverpool got a foothold in the game and Arne Slot changed things.

The possession Liverpool had was dominant - it created so many opportunities. They got complete control going 3-1 ahead and it never looked in doubt from there.

Against [Nottingham] Forest, Liverpool found it difficult to break them down and they were impatient in the way they played - today there was a real calmness.

[The San Siro is] a difficult stadium to come to and one that can be toxic for an away team. The way AC Milan are struggling themselves it might not have been as hostile as we thought it would have been.

There will be moments Arne Slot will be disappointed where AC Milan got too much possession and counter-attacked when it was a sloppy pass from a Liverpool player.

But from 15-minutes onwards it was an extremely professional performance from Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's assist for Liverpool’s equaliser was his 80th for the Reds – since his debut in October 2016, only Kevin de Bruyne (146) and team-mate Mohamed Salah (90) have provided more in all competitions among Premier League players.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I think we had more chances but they were dangerous in moments as well. We controlled the game pretty good and it's a fair result for us.

"We stayed calm and stayed focus. We have to thank our centre-backs for two great headers. After that moment we controlled the game better.

"We work on set-pieces before every game and we're very happy it worked out today.

"Every player wants to play and I got my moment. I really wanted to show myself and I am very happy with an assist but also especially with the win."

Wow. The arrogance and disrespect shown by Slot to Forest is bizarre. Most managers would accept they were beaten by the better side. Think he's in for a rude awakening - and he'll deserve it.

  8. 'Unbelievable we lose to Forest if we can play like this'published at 09:11 British Summer Time 18 September

    Arne SlotImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says it is unbelievable his side lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday when you consider the Reds' ruthless performance against AC Milan three days later in the Champions League.

After conceding early, goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai helped Liverpool kick off their Champions League campaign with a dominant 3-1 win in Milan.

Their assured performance was a fine response to their shock "honeymoon-ending" 1-0 loss at home to Forest which Slot said at the time was a "big setback".

"Losing Saturday was a blow and to be 1-0 down early tonight, you are wondering how we react," Slot, who was taking charge of his first European match as Liverpool manager, told Amazon Prime.

"But if you can play so good it is - I won't say a disgrace - unbelievable you lose to Forest at home if you can play like this today."

Aston Villa fan Nim Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live about the club's win over Young Boys: “Absolutely incredible. We have been building up for this for many, many years and finally last night I think we showed what we’re about. It’s absolutely fabulous to be back at the top table of football.

"There’s no reason why we can’t go deep into this competition. Give the big boys a bit of a fright on the way. We’re confident.

“It’s been an incredible rollercoaster. I’ve been to a lot of championship games. I could never forget Wigan away. 3-0 but we had a great time at Blackpool anyway.

“From Championship to Champions League is absolutely mind boggling."

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports, dedicated victory to Villa legend Gary Shaw who died earlier this week aged 63: "This victory is for Gary Shaw.

"We [continued in] the Champions League the way they finished 42 years ago. We want to dedicate this victory to Gary Shaw and his family.

"It was difficult. Our experiences last year [in the Europa Conference League] show that. We focused very well for 90 minutes to be consistent. We were adapting on the pitch. We always respected them.

"We have to create a new way. What we created in the Conference League last season was fantastic."

On Ollie Watkins' injury: "He's OK."

On paper you are thinking that should be a win for Aston Villa, but you still have to go and win the game.

You still have to go and play well, you still have to go and defend, still have to put your body on the line and win the ball, you have still got to create opportunities.

They have done everything Unai Emery wanted tonight. The tempo was quite slow to start with but they picked it up at the right time and got the goals at the right time.

They also had two goals disallowed, so on balance you have to say it was a good night's work well done.

Unai will be delighted with that, they have got their first points in the Champions League and now on we go.

Aston Villa goalscorer and player of the match Youri Tielemans speaking after the win over Young Boys: "Tonight was a good performance, not just from myself but from my team.

"It feels really good - it's amazing. We can enjoy tonight and focus on the next game."

On the rest of the Champions League's league phase: "I'm very excited. Every game's going to be really tough. This new format makes it even tougher.

"It's going to come down to the details in the end, after the eight games. it's going to be tough."

  13. Emery's team hit ground running on Champions League returnpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 18 September

    Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa

    Matthew Howarth
    BBC Sport

Following the tragic passing of Gary Shaw on Monday, Aston Villa delivered a performance the former striker and his fellow 1982 European Cup winners would have been proud of in Switzerland.

Playing their first match at this level in 42 years, Unai Emery's team took time to adapt to the artificial surface at Stadion Wankdorf but never looked back once Youri Tielemans had put them ahead following a well-worked corner routine.

Jacob Ramsey doubled Villa's lead after some calamitous defending by Young Boys, who were spared further first-half punishment by the video assistant referee's decision to disallow Ollie Watkins' effort for handball.

Jhon Duran was also denied by VAR, who chalked off the Colombian's second-half finish after Amadou Onana had handled the ball in the build-up.

Silvere Ganvoula and Filip Ugrinic forced Emi Martinez into action in the second half, but Villa's lead was never seriously under threat as Emery's team began the Champions League's new-look league phase with a comprehensive win.

Europe's top club competition returns to Villa Park on 2 October, when Villa take on Bayern Munich in a repeat of the 1981-82 final.

A proud Aston Villa fan here this morning. Our first game back at the top table couldn’t have gone any better, other than VAR ruling out Watkins’ goal for a handball that no one else could see at any angle. Written in the stars that our current no8 scored our first for Gary Shaw, beautiful symmetry for a club legend. Unai Emery, what a manager! From 16th in the Prem to a Champions League away win. Genius! Oh, and it wasn’t lost on me that we were playing Champions League whilst Man Utd were playing Barnsley. You couldn’t make it up!!

Manchester United enjoyed the ‘perfect night’ with their biggest victory under Erik ten Hag to cruise into the EFL Cup last 16 at the expense of League One outfit Barnsley.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen all scored twice, while Brazilian winger Antony converted a first-half spot-kick in what turned into a rout by the end.

It was United's biggest win since they hammered Southampton 9-0 in February 2021 when the stands were still empty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was certainly a night to remember as far as Ten Hag’s tenure is concerned. United had not previously scored five under the Dutchman and the goals that got them there before Eriksen’s late brace was even more reason for celebration.

Championship side Preston North End stunned Premier League Fulham winning 16-15 on penalties in the longest shootout in Carabao Cup history.

Ryan Ledson scored the winning penalty in the third round after Timothy Castagne blazed over the bar for Fulham.

Fulham's Jorge Cuenca and Preston's Kaine Kesler Hayden had earlier seen their own misses cancelled out.

Preston's success meant the shootout eclipsed the previous record set by Derby County and Carlisle in 2016 when the Rams won 14-13 in a shootout.

"I've never been involved in a shootout like that," said Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom.

"As it wore on, eight-all, nine-all, it made me more determined to win it because of the effort and commitment put in to get to penalties.

"We were the team, certainly in injury time, trying to get the game to penalties. It was a great atmosphere. We'll look forward to the draw but we have to park it, we have other things to focus on now."
