Mason Holgate's instinctive flick was his first goal in more than five years

Norwich City's winless run was extended to seven games as they played out an entertaining draw at West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

Mason Holgate gave the Baggies an early lead with a clever flick from close range.

But Emiliano Marcondes levelled for the Canaries soon after with his first goal for Norwich.

A frantic final five minutes of the first half saw Torbjorn Heggem's own goal put Norwich ahead only for Josh Maja to equalise two minutes later. Karlan Grant then had a goal for the hosts disallowed.

West Brom had the better of the chances after the break as a seventh draw in eight games sees them drop to sixth place in the Championship.

Incredibly the four first-half goals were more than the three scored in the previous seven games at The Hawthorns this season.

Norwich ended a three-game losing streak as the point moves them up to 13th, but they have not won since a 4-0 victory over Hull City on 5 October.

Borja Sainz forced an early save from Baggies keeper Alex Palmer before the hosts took the lead.

Grant whipped the ball in after a short corner and Holgate was on hand to backheel his first goal since March 2019.

But nine minutes later Norwich were level as Shane Duffy set the recalled Jack Stacey free down the right and his low cross was turned in by Marcondes at the near post.

Moments after Norwich could have been ahead as Sainz took advantage of a defensive error, but Palmer was there to save well, while a long-range Grant effort was deflected wide of the visitors' post soon after.

Mikey Johnston spurned an excellent chance for West Brom before the break when Tom Fellows' cross dropped to the winger, but he could only blaze over from seven yards.

A superb first half ended in frantic style as Heggem got the final touch on Sainz's strike after good inter-play with Marcondes, but two minutes later Maja volleyed in Fellows' cross to make it 2-2.

Grant thought he had given West Brom the lead on the stroke of half-time but his powerful strike was ruled out for a handball in the build up following a Johnston effort.

Grant and Jayson Molumby went close for the hosts early in the second half while Grant narrowly headed a Fellows cross over soon after as the Baggies upped the tempo.

Palmer was again equal to Sainz when he broke through after an hour and Norwich's Spanish forward saw his long-range effort just go wide with nine minutes to go.

Canaries goalkeeper Angus Gunn, back after six games out through injury, did well to save from Jed Wallace, while Onel Hernandez also went close for the visitors with a late effort.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan told BBC WM:

"I think that in general there were things that I liked of the team, especially in attack, especially in the first 60 to 70 minutes of the game.

"In these moments we were creating a lot of good opportunities - in the first half it's true that we gave them the option to create some good opportunities too.

"But in the second half we kept creating chances without conceding chances.

"But in the last 20 minutes we didn't use the control of the game that we had well enough to create something else - that for me is the difference, to have scored a goal that could have made the difference in the game."

Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"I think sometimes a point is worth a little bit more, and I think that's the case today.

"Sometimes you're disappointed after a draw, sometimes you can say 'ok we were playing against a good West Bromwich side', and that we also have to respect.

"But I think the top moments for this team were really, really top and we created some really good moments, some great chances and scored some good goals.

"Of course we also had to survive in bits of the game, which we expected.

"So good for everyone, good for us, good for the group, good for the players as this is a step in the direction we want and need."
