Josh Sargent's strike was his second league goal in three games this season

Oliver Arblaster’s strike maintained Sheffield United's unbeaten Championship start and denied Norwich City a first league win of the campaign.

Josh Sargent had put the Canaries ahead after 22 minutes with a calm finish after being sent through on goal by Amankwah Forson.

But the lead lasted only ten minutes as Arblaster’s low shot made it 1-1 shortly after the half-hour mark.

Although both sides had chances towards the end of the first period, a dull second half brought very little goalmouth incident.

The Blades, whose two-point deduction for defaulted transfer payments means they only have three points despite a win and two draws so far this season, went close through Harry Souttar's early header.

But they trailed to the home side's first meaningful attack when Forson combined with Marcelino Nunez to tee up United States forward Sargent.

Chris Wilder’s side were soon deservedly level when a fine Andre Brooks cross deflected to the edge of the box where Arblaster calmly fired the ball past Canaries keeper Angus Gunn.

Sargent almost restored the lead but his close-range header was well saved by the Blades' debutant keeper Michael Cooper, while at the other end, Gunn produced a decent stop to keep out Harrison Burrows.

Despite some late pressure by the hosts, neither side looked like finding a winner after the break as they settled for a share of the spoils.

Norwich head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup:

"There is a lot of belief in this squad – you should see the way they train – and they showed that against a strong team with a lot of Premier League experience.

"We took some more steps in the right direction today. It was a good performance and there is potential to be even better. We started well and scored a fantastic goal, with the ball coming all the way from the back.

"That is exactly what I like to see but then we conceded a poor goal when we had the ball and then gave it away, which has happened before this season.

"But after that we did well and there were a lot of times when we looked like having a good chance and the final pass, or the final touch, wasn’t quite good enough."

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder:

"It was a good game between two clubs with a lot of similarities. Both have been in the Premier League, both have strong squads and are well coached.

"Being greedy I think we could have taken all three points had we shown just a little more quality in and around the box when we were in good positions.

"But when my head hits the pillow tonight I’ll probably be happy with a hard-earned point against a good side. And if you are not going to win, it’s important you don’t get beat and come away with something.

"This is a good group and their attitude to going behind was first class."
