So sad to see Darwin go. He had a childlike enthusiasm and when he scored that curler last season, his first goal for a while, he had tears in his eyes. I still feel he was a winger, rather than a striker. Hope he’s soon back in England.

Sorry to see Darwin go, he always kept trying but never seemed to have that self belief or confidence that all top strikers need in front of goal. Wish him nothing but the best moving forward.

With the potential sale of Darwin Nunez, Liverpool could only have one out-and-out striker on the books - new man Hugo Ekitike.

Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Federico Chiesa are all able to play down the middle, though it isn't their natural position.

Otherwise, it's a case of youngsters such as Jayden Danns and Trent Kone-Doherty.

You would think the Reds now have to go out and strengthen in that area.

  9. 'Best for both parties that Nunez moves on'published at 10:26 British Summer Time 7 August

Darwin Nunez applauds Liverpool fansImage source, Getty Images

Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, The Redmen TV's Dan Clubbe said that while there is frustration around a potential deal, a move away from Liverpool would ultimately suit both club and Darwin Nunez.

"It's not necessarily disappointment - the overriding feeling is frustration," Clubbe said. "[Nunez] came in for a lot of money and there was a lot of expectation around him.

"The timing of his signing was interesting. He came in at the same time as Erling Haaland. The comparison was made from the get-go and Nunez never lived up to those levels.

"He was a Jurgen Klopp-led signing, which brought danger. Liverpool's recruitment had been so well thought-out, smart and data-driven. To remove from that and allow Klopp to have free rein maybe was too much of a gamble.

"Given the money we spent on him, he probably has come some way short of what we expected, so it probably is best for both parties that he moves on."

Peter Odemwingie kind of fits that... He didn't so much train separately as drive to the next club ground after a misunderstanding that a deal was completed or would be by the time he arrived. Unfortunately for him he was only re-integrated as far as the subs bench!

  13. Nunez on fire in pre-seasonpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 7 August

So far, the Uruguayan striker has been finding the net with ease during Liverpool's pre-season campaign.

Nunez has netted five times so far - matching his total tally for Premier League goals last season.

The 26-year-old bagged an impressive hat trick against Stoke behind closed doors, a goal against Preston North End and found the net again on Monday against Spanish club Athletic Bilbao.

Think Dom means me there folks.

I'd say Harry Kane trying to force a move to Manchester City in summer 2021 counts. He ended up staying at Spurs for the next two seasons where he scored 59 goals in 99 games before his eventual move to Bayern Munich in 2023.

But it is worth mentioning Kane said during the 2021 summer window he "never refused to train" and that he had a "clear conscience".

Anyone got an even more clear-cut example?

  16. Liverpool 'one of the best player sellers' in European footballpublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 7 August

    Sami Mokbel
BBC Sport Senior football correspondent on Football Daily

Tyler Morton's transfer to Lyon and Harvey Elliott's potential move to RB Leipzig are so pertinent because they represent pure profit on the balance sheets for Liverpool.

That [alongside Darwin Nunez's prospective move to Saudi Arabia] will give the club more impetus to go and make another sizeable bid for Newcastle United's Alexander Isak.

Their ability to go and potentially spend £150m on Isak is largely down to the club being good sellers. Liverpool are one of the best player sellers in European football.

  17. Is it right time for Liverpool to sell Nunez?published at 10:01 British Summer Time 7 August

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Darwin Nunez has enjoyed some memorable moments with the Anfield club, such as January's match-winning late double at Brentford, but has struggled to make an impact consistently.

He has scored 25 Premier League goals, underperforming his expected goals (xG) total by 8.6. That is the second-worst record of any player over the past three years, with only Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton faring worse.

  19. Sterling and Chilwell still 'waiting for a solution'published at 09:55 British Summer Time 7 August

Chelsea v Bayer Leverkusen (Fri, 19:00 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on the futures of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell: "The situation is quite clear. They are training. They are waiting for a solution.

"When they leave it is just the club that will text or call me.

"It's the same when Lesley [Ugochukwu] joined Burnley. I have this kind of news from the club.

"I don't pay attention with the ones that are training and need to leave. I just focus on how we prepare the session and how we win games."
