  2. Man Utd 'like' Baleba but Brighton stance makes deal unlikelypublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 7 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter

Manchester United like Carlos Baleba, they are on the look out for someone who could strengthen their midfield, and skipper Bruno Fernandes has called for new signings.

The problem is Brighton's desire to sell, which is non-existent, and owner Tony Bloom's negotiating tactics - hard line.

That is not to say United couldn't get Baleba - it's just that it would cost an enormous amount of money, probably in excess of anything United have spent so far this summer.

It is not obvious where the money would come from, because even if they can sign Benjamin Sesko without selling players first, eventually they will have to.

And it would take more than getting rid of the 'bomb squad' which even the club accepts is likely to be later in the window.

The key point is whether United look for an alternative or keep their powder dry for Baleba, either in case circumstances change dramatically in this window, or, more likely, for next summer.

We do have Benjamin Sesko news from Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on X. He says Manchester United and RB Leipzig are back in talks today over the "final package" to a potential transfer.

He adds: "Sesko agreed personal terms yesterday and will train separately until deal is done between clubs."

  6. Fans desperate for Gyokeres to succeedpublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 7 August

BBC football news reporter at the Emirates Stadium

It was only a pre-season friendly against Villarreal, yet there was still a feeling of excitement and anticipation heading to Emirates Stadium as Arsenal supporters looked to see new £64m signing Viktor Gyokeres in action.

Fans are desperately hoping the 27-year-old striker will be the missing piece whose arrival allows the Gunners to lift a trophy for the first time since 2020.

The loudest cheers before kick-off were for Gyokeres when his name was read out in the starting line-up. The only noise to rival it came for the introduction of talented 15-year-old Max Dowman.

There was expectation every time the ball went near the Sweden international and it looked as though his team-mates were also trying to make sure Gyokeres scored on his first start, and at his new home ground.

That did not happen but there were promising signs, and the hour Gyokeres played will be crucial to his fitness before Arsenal start the new Premier League season at Manchester United on Sunday, 17 August.

  7. Gyokeres 'will be in really good place' for start of seasonpublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 7 August

Arsenal supporters got to see new £64m signing Viktor Gyokeres in action for about an hour last night.

The Swedish striker had some promising moments but ultimately ended his Arsenal debut on the losing side as the Gunners lost 3-2 to Villarreal.

"He's been with us only a week or so, but I already saw a lot of things and a lot of purpose, especially the way he was attacking in certain spaces," said manager Mikel Arteta.

"Because he is so willing and so confident he can deliver straight away, I have no doubts he will be in a really good place."

  8. Son leaves Spurs for MLSpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 7 August

Son Heung-min was presented as an LAFC player last night after the MLS club paid a fee in excess of £20m for the former Tottenham Hotspur captain.

Son revealed in a news conference on Saturday he would leave Tottenham after 10 years at the club.

That £20m-total surpasses the previous MLS record of £16.5m paid by Atlanta United to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.

"It's a dream come true. LA - what a city," said Son on Wednesday.

"If I'm honest, it was not my first choice. But the first call I had with [LAFC co-president] John [Thorrington] after my season finished, he changed my mind, changed my heart, my brain.

"He showed me the destination where I should be. Now I'm here, I'm more than happy, I'm so excited."

I've still not recovered from yesterday. It was all happening!

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall joined Everton, Benjamin Sesko reportedly chose Manchester United over Newcastle, Darwin Nunez became linked to Al-Hilal, Yoane Wissa returned to Brentford training.

And, overnight, LAFC announced the signing of Son Heung-min and then it was reported that Manchester United are interested in Brighton's Carlos Baleba.

Who knows what'll be in store today. Should be a fun one.
