Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti to Amazon Prime: "The result means that Arsenal were much better than us. The game was a bit different. For 60 minutes the game was level, and then they shoot two fantastic free-kicks. The game it changes. Now it will be very difficult in the second leg. But we have to try.

"The reaction, mentally we went down. We had a problem in the final 30 minutes of the game."

On Real Madrid never overturning a three-goal first leg deficit in their history: "There is always a first time. You have to try. The only thing you can do together is to try, and we will try.

"They are a really good team. Compact all the time and good on the ball. They are a good team. I said this yesterday. No news.

"The comeback starts tonight."

Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to Amazon Prime: "Beautiful. So happy so proud of the team. We have the opportunity to make a lot of people proud and we certainly have done that. I've never seen the stadium like this. Before the game they were already singing and already playing the game. For big European nights you need the big stadiums that create atmosphere and you need individual magic moments and there you go.

"That's the beauty of whoever invented this sport. We hadn't scored a free-kick since September, 2021. And tonight, against Real Madrid at home in the Champions League, we scored two in 13 minutes."

On Arsenal's set-piece coach celebrating the goal: "He can claim it if he wants, it doesn't matter. It's incredible.

"If there's a player who can do it, how clean he strikes it it's Declan. But you have to execute it at the highest level. And against one of the best keeper's in the world as well. It's amazing."

On Bukayo Saka's performance: "He was key. Again he elevates the level of the team. There's a fear factor every time he's on the ball. Team step off him and that creates space. [On him being substituted] He's fine, I think it was a kick.

"OK. We need to go there. We know we will have to step up again and we will try to win it.

"It's another step in the right direction as a team. We have to make another one and replicate what we've done tonight."

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier, speaking to TNT Sports: "For the most part we played well, especially in the second half but we're disappointed with the goals we conceded. They are a very experienced team, have been together for a long time with the same manager and the same players so we knew what to expect but we could not control it as well as we would've liked.

"We couldn't take our chances but we had enough to do more. It's a game where you always have to be alive as they are ready to hurt you in any moment. It's about staying focused and keeping possession. In the second half we did that well, we just couldn't take our chances, nothing super clear but enough to get more goals.

"I don't think it was a lack of concentration [for Inter Milan's second goal] and the feeling on the pitch was we were trying to go and win it and they are a very dangerous team - they were in the Champions League final two years ago."

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich captain Joshua Kimmich, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's not a good result for us. We were the better team, had more chances and in the end they used their chances better so they won.

"We played against a strong team but we really controlled the game, we had more chances and we need to score more than one goal."

Yes the Arsenal advantage is three goals but if Madrid get an early goal at the Bernabeu, anything can happen.

Yes it is unlikely because of how well Mikel Arteta sets his team out in the big games, especially away from home, but you can never write off Real Madrid.

That was the third time Arsenal and Real Madrid have played in the Champions League.

Arsenal have won 1-0, 3-0 and drawn 0-0.

Declan Rice's performance will of course be remembered for the free kicks but there was a lot, lot more to it. He was all over the pitch, running up and down and everywhere. He is immense.

He is big, tall, rangy midfielder and he played that role. To then step up and hit the two free kicks... It's stuff that dreams are made of.

John: Yeah Madrid could easily score three at the Bernabeu, but I don't see them being able to keep a clean sheet. Arsenal could have had six or seven tonight, barring a few off-the-line blocks and Courtois worldies.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, speaking to Amazon Prime: "We were nowhere near it. That's the fact and Arsenal were really good. I know two of their goals were free-kicks but they could have had way more. There is a second leg and that's what we're holding on to. We need something really special, something crazy really but one place where crazy things happen is our house. 90 more minutes at home to pull something out of the bag.

"They're two great pieces of individual quality and if it wasn't for them, they still have other chances. We got punished and that happens at top-level football.

"In these games, you need to create more. Very rarely do you come to a place like this score one goal and take your lead back home. They reacted really well to the transition. We didn't do enough on the ball to threaten.

"We're still alive, we've got 90 mins of football and anything can happen at the Bernabeu."

For a few weeks now it has all been about this Real Madrid tie.

The Premier League is long gone, although not mathematically, as supporters we felt that for a long time we did not have enough in the tank to catch Liverpool.

When this draw came out you are thinking that we could go on a real ride in the Champions League and turn what was a disappointing season into a magical one.
