Nottingham Forest Women: Meet the prolific duo trying to fire the Reds to promotion

Third-tier Nottingham Forest have had quite the start to the season.

They needed extra-time to beat Burnley in the third round - a tie that was only played on Wednesday because of a postponement pre-Christmas - but have been firing so far this campaign.

They have scored 85 goals and conceded just five in a 18-game unbeaten start to the season. They are top of the third-tier National League Northern Premier Division table, in the last four of the National League Cup, and while progressing in the FA Cup they thrashed Long Itchington 19-0 in December.

Speaking before their win against Burnley, striker Mel Johnson said: ""It's very ruthless, yes

"We don't take any notice of who we are playing or where we are playing - we just want to get the job done as best as we can.

"It's been incredible and really special to be a part of," Johnson said.

"With the quality that the club has brought in this season, it's proven. We are doing our jobs and it's working really well at the minute."

  8. 'More of the same' not enough for Ipswich against Man Citypublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Man City v Ipswich Town (13:00 GMT)

Third-tier Ipswich are unbeaten in the Women's National League Southern Premier this season, winning nine of their 11 games, and lead the table on goal difference from Hashtag United.

They are into the fourth round for the third successive season and in 2022 made it to the last eight before losing to West Ham.

Manager Joe Sheehan, though, believes 'more of the same' will not be enough against Manchester City.

"More often than not from the season so far we've been the dominant team and now, for the first time, that has totally swung in Manchester City's favour," he said.

"We've played in our way for some time now, that's been really consistent. Clearly we can't go with that same approach.

"Do we want to come too far away from that? Not really. But there might be some phases of the game where we might have to make totally different decisions than what we'd normally do in a league game."

  9. Taylor relishes Man City return in 'magical' FA Cuppublished at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor said his players will use the hurt from their back-to-back defeats before the winter break to motivate them against Ipswich.

City lost to Barcelona in the Women's Champions League before being beaten by Everton in the Women's Super League.

"Although it’s four weeks since we played Everton, now we have still in our minds this is an opportunity to step forward in another competition," he said.

"The memory is still there for sure, the players will have it in their minds and I will for sure.

"The FA Cup is a magical competition. I have been fortunate enough to win it and anyone who has done that really cherishes those moments."

On facing Ipswich, Taylor added: "You have to say they have been impressive going unbeaten in their season so far. That’s never easy in any league. We will give them the amount of respect we give any opposition."

Rewind five years and Ipswich were travelling to Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round.

It wasn't a day to remember though, with them heading back to Suffolk after a 10-0 defeat.

They have been promoted to the third tier since then and Natasha Thomas and Sophie Peskett, who were part of that team, are hoping for a much closer game.

"We want to play against the best teams and Man City are that. We know it's going to be very competitive," forward Thomas told BBC Radio Suffolk.

Winger Peskett, who scored the only goal in their win over Bournemouth in round three, added: "For me as an individual, I'm just really excited to see how far I've come since the last time we played them.

"We're not naive, it's going to be a really tough game and we just want to be competitive and show what we've been working on. If we could cause an upset, you never know, that would be amazing.

"All of us want to play at that top level one day and be in the position these players are in. I'm going to try and soak in everything I can, learn as much as possible and just enjoy the occasion."

Vivianne Miedema is on the bench for Manchester City after recovering from a knee injury that has ruled her out for three.

The Dutch forward, who joined City from Arsenal in the summer, underwent surgery on her left knee in October.

Chloe Kelly starts for Gareth Taylor's side, who hand a debut to new signing Rebecca Knaak, but Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw are all still missing through injury.

Manchester City XI: Yamashita, Coombs, Fowler, Kelly, Roord (C), Ouahabi, Casparij, Blindkilde Brown, Knaak, Prior, Murphy.

Subs: Keating, Aleixandri, Miedema, Park, Fujino, Hasegawa.

Ipswich name new loan signing Lucy Watson on the bench for the game at the Joie Stadium.

The 21-year-old joined from Chelsea on Friday on a deal until the end of the season.

Top-scorer Sophie Peskett starts for Joe Sheehan's side, who are currently top of the Southern Premier Division and pushing for promotion to the Championship.

Ipswich Town XI: Negri, Mitchell, Boswell, Wearing, Barker, Robertson, Garrad, Peskett, O’Brien, Hughes, Thomas.

Subs: Hartley, Bryant, King, Rutherford, Fisher, Watson.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has been absolutely brilliant so far for the visitors.

She drifts in again from the left, but, rather than shooting, she picks out Kosovare Asllani.

The Sweden international is able to take a touch and then tries to pick her spot but Frankie Gibbs makes a really good stop.
