Josh Brownhill opened the scoring for Burnley at Bramall Lane
Burnley moved to within a point of Championship leaders Sheffield United by beating them at Bramall Lane.
Goals from captain Josh Brownhill and Zian Flemming either side of half-time were enough for Scott Parker's side.
In the meeting of the English Football League's two meanest defences, being clinical was key, and the Blades struggled to find their form in front of goal.
They dominated large parts of the game but suffered their first home league defeat of the season.
It was a cagey first half and chances were at a premium, but United's pressing gave them the early upper hand, pinning Burnley back.
The visitors were looking to strike on the counter-attack, though, getting the ball out wide quickly whenever they got the chance. It soon paid off.
Burnley took the lead through Brownhill, who headed in his third goal in as many games - at the back post from Bashir Humphreys' cross.
Eight minutes after the restart, their lead was doubled.
After Flemming hit the wall with a free-kick, his strike on the rebound was deflected high into the net to stunt what had been a purposeful start to the second half by United.
Burnley continued to soak up pressure and threaten on the break.
Starting Rhian Brewster up front with Kieffer Moore had not worked for Blades boss Chris Wilder, and he made changes in an attempt to force a way into the game.
Though Wilder's substitutes Tom Davies and Anel Ahmedhodzic went close, Burnley keeper James Trafford was able to celebrate a festive clean sheet, while United's misery was compounded by defender Harry Souttar limping off late on.
Post-match reaction
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I didn't think there was much in the game. It was always going be a tight game.
"They found the quality in the first half to put them in front, but for me it was an even game.
"We started the game very well and had control. But we know they're dangerous and, to be fair to them, they found a way through our press, put in a decent cross and finished.
"We were unfortunate to go in at half-time behind and then we started the second half on the front foot.
"The time of the goals gave them something to hold onto. It was an unfortunate goal to concede to go to 2-0 down.
"We've had to deal with, yet again, more head-scratching (refereeing) decisions."
Burnley manager Scott Parker told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"It was a brilliant away performance all round. We've got a very young squad and as individuals, and as a team, we are learning things.
"I'm immensely proud of the team for how they came through today's game.
"They quietened the stadium early; they had a control, which we were very comfortable to give them.
"We score a brilliant goal in the first half and in the second half we had our moments. Overall, it was a really solid performance.
"Zian Flemming did very well today. He has been exceptional in the last two games.
"We're a passing and progressive team, looking to play in a certain way. But in certain moments you need to go top-line a bit earlier. He gave us that platform."
