George Oakley is the Championship's top scorer

Two George Oakley headers helped Ayr United beat Partick Thistle at Somerset Park and remain second in the Scottish Championship.

Nick McAllister's red card put the hosts under pressure late on and although Harry Milne pulled one back for Kris Doolan's side, Ayr stood firm to take all three points.

Connor McLennan's cross set up Oakley's first as the English striker found the top right corner.

Oakley added his second before half-time, dropping another header over Thistle goalkeeper David Mitchell for his 14th goal of the season after Jay Henderson picked him out at the back post.

Thistle's late surge came after McAllister's dismissal for a foul on Milne.

The former Cove Rangers player then thumped in the rebound from Ben Stanway's saved shot to give the visitors some hope, but goalkeeper Harry Stone and his defence repelled everything else to make it seven games unbeaten for Ayr.

Thistle stay fourth in the table, nine points behind Scott Brown's side, who trail league-leaders Falkirk by two points having played a game more.
