What we need is a “too close to call” system where if the offside is less than 5 cm or so, the benefit of the doubt goes to the attacker.

Joe, Manchester: RE Alan 08:37 - how does clear daylight make it any easier? If anything it's worse because then you have to determine whether there is the overlapping of an attackers heel and a defenders toe preventing daylight.

Matt, Scotland: Reply to Alan 08:37. People talk about 'going back to daylight between defender and striker' as if it would solve all the problems, but to see daylight it would still need someone to either draw a line on a screen, or for the linesman to make an on field decision at the time of a pass. Either option leaves us in same position as we are now, so people would still moan.

Missed this one? Last night, teenager Mason Melia agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur for what St Patrick's Athletic have announced is a "record transfer fee for a League of Ireland player".

The 17-year-old made his senior debut in May 2023 and became the youngest scorer in league history aged 15.

The deal, which is reportedly worth an initial £1.6m, will see Melia move from St Pat's to the Premier League side in January 2026 on a five-year contract.

The County Wicklow native has made 54 appearances for St Pat's, scoring 10 times, and earned his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad in October 2024.

In 2023, he became the youngest player to play in an FAI Cup final when he helped his side defeat Bohemians to lift the trophy.

Similar to the whole of the ball being completely over the line, the significant body parts of head and feet need to be distinctly in front of the defender to signify an unfair advantage. Rather than just possible signs of the attacker moving quicker than the defender.

Newcastle host Arsenal looking to defend their 2-0 first leg advantage and reach the final of the competition for the second time in four years.

The other semi-final sees Liverpool host Tottenham at Anfield on Thursday. Spurs, whose last honour was in this competition in 2008, have a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

The winners of the two ties will meet at Wembley Stadium in the final on Sunday, 16 March.
