Steven Gerrard celebrates with Xabi AlonsoImage source, Getty Images

Most complete player has got to be Steven Gerrard, he scored important goals and got assists, tremendous work ethic and lifted everyone around him, a true leader and also could tackle. Ronaldo is an all time great and so is Messi, but when we are talking about ‘complete’ there is no one better than Gerrard.

    Veecha, Surrey

Cristiano is probably the most complete forward ever. Steven Gerrard has to be up there as one of the most complete. Pretty sure he played every outfield position at some point in his career.

    Anon

The most complete player will always be a midfielder and that midfielder will always be Steven Gerrard. The scousers talk of a team of carraghers, but my word a team of Gerarrd's would be hard to beat.

For me, the most complete would be someone like Ruud Gullit. Capable of playing anywhere on the pitch, defensively solid, a midfield creator and can score goals too.

    AJ, Cornwall

Ronaldo has a higher commercial value than any other football player, hence leaving him with the biggest fanbase for a footballer in the entire world. However, most of those people have zero ball knowledge. In my opinion Ronaldo doesn’t even make top 5 for best of all time. Messi is number 1, but the most complete player has to be Ruud Gullit for me.

    Isaac

I think Ronaldo’s more complete than Messi - Messi still a better player though. In terms of most complete of all time? Gullit, Gerrard and Koeman strike me as players than could do it all - other than win a league title in Gerrard’s case.

James Milner is among the latest shouts, and rightly so when it comes to selfless all-rounders.

He's still going strong in the Premier League 23 years on from his debut for Leeds United.

Milner is currently 39 years old. Some players have gone one better in England's top-flight.

For me, a complete player would be James Milner outstanding wherever he's asked to play/fill in.

    Chris, Tilbury

What makes a complete player? I think that's a selfless player.. someone who puts the team before themselves and I'm not sure Ronaldo as good as he is, has done that. I think players in the mould of James Milner stand out in this respect. Played wherever he's needed and done so admirably... could you imagine Ronaldo being asked to play where he wasn't gonna be the main man?

    Anon

You could win the league with 11 John O'Sheas or James Milners, and I won't be convinced otherwise.

    Aly

Rooney and Milner are much more complete footballers!

In his defence, throw into the mix the chip at Highbury and the nutmeg on Luis Figo and suddenly, you've got a case building.

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid playmaker Gheorghe Hagi is widely regarded as Romania's greatest-ever player.

With 124 appearances for his country between 1983 and 2000, some might argue he deserves a national holiday in his honour.

Now the national team manager of Romania, he led his country to the last 16 of Euro 2024 in Germany, where they lost 3-0 to the Netherlands and will be looking to start preparing for World Cup qualifiers in March.

Hagi will however, will always be remembered for a stunning strike for his country in their 3-1 win over Colombia at USA '94.

Once part of the 'golden triangle of attacking talent' at Old Trafford alongside Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, he became the 'Welcome to Manchester' poster boy (literally) for Manchester City just two years later.

His career has also seen him play in Italy, China, Brazil and Argentina.

And after retiring at his boyhood club Boca Juniors in 2021, he has started his journey as a manager.

Most complete player must be elite across the entire pitch. Cafu and Beckenbauer are exactly that.

Personally, I'd also argue that a complete player would very much be someone who could do a bit of everything to a very respectable standard.

It's a very interesting and fair debate over what exactly constitutes being the "complete player."

Messi is the best player of all time. However, to be the complete player surely you must be capable of playing all positions. A Steven Gerrard type player who I think could play in all positions (maybe even GK - who knows) is surely a better answer. I'm not seeing Messi (or Ronaldo for that matter) playing right back in the 120th minute of a Champs League final. I’m sure others may disagree on my example, but you get my gist.

He has scored 64 league goals in exactly the same number of league games, putting him four goals shy of the competition's top 10 scorers.

The forward has averaged a league goal every 88 minutes since joining Al Nassr just over two years ago.

Ronaldo is the best by a country mile. He has done it in many different leagues around the world and for his country which makes him the best. He is fit as a fiddle and I can see him scoring a thousand professional goals. What an achievement that would be.

According to Expresso, a leading weekly Portuguese newspaper, Cristiano Ronaldo has more than doubled the number of organizations in which he holds a majority share through his company, CR7 SA, over the last two years. In total, he has stakes in 21 different enterprises.

"As you all know, I have investments in various sectors, and what I want most is to keep moving forward," he said.

Ronaldo, whose YouTube channel was the fastest ever to reach one million subscribers - he currently has 73 million - has his older brother Hugo Aveiro and former Sporting team-mate Miguel Paixao among his right-hand men to manage his businesses.

A candidate in the upcoming Portuguese presidential elections has announced recently that he would like to have Ronaldo on his Council of State if elected, but that can be ruled out. For now, at least.
