Kilmarnock v Livingston highlights

02/08/25

Livingston "showed real resilience" to mark their return to the Scottish Premiership by coming back from two goals down to earn a draw against 10-man Kilmarnock.

First-half goals from Djenairo Daniels and David Watson had put Stuart Kettlewell's side in charge at the break.

Daniels slotted in the first goal of the Premiership season after Liam Polworth's through ball, before goalkeeper Jerome Prior spilled Jamie Brandon's low cross and Watson was first to react to tuck in the loose ball.

"That's the difference in the Premiership," manager Davie Martindale said. "We'd have gone in at 0-0 in the Championship, and gotten away with those mistakes."

However, after a VAR check led to George Stanger being sent off for tugging back Robbie Muirhead in the penalty area, the striker stepped up to bury the resultant spot-kick and give Davie Martindale's side a route back into the game.

Scott Pitman then netted an equaliser four minutes from time when Lewis Smith drove to the bye-line and cut back to ensure Livingston came away with something from their first match back in the top flight.

"The players have to take huge credit, they showed real resilience," Martindale added. "It was something we had in abundance last year so it's nice to see it transitioning into this year.

"The character the players showed was exactly what you want as a manager."

What was the main talking point?

Both managers had spoken in the build-up of their desire to implement attacking, possession-based football this season.

The intent was there, but in the first half both sides continually fell down in their execution in the final third. Much of the opening 45 minutes was a battle played out between the two penalty areas.

After Kilmarnock got themselves in front, they were well on top, and could have put the game to bed in the latter stages of the first half. Their failure to score a third came back to bite them.

Livingston were rocked by that quick-fire double, but Martindale sides will scrap for everything, and they did drag themselves back into the game with the penalty.

From then on it was pretty much one-way traffic as Livi made the most of their one-man advantage and Pittman's equaliser was well constructed.

Who stood out?

Kilmarnock were indebted to goalkeeper Max Stryjek for coming up with big saves in key moments before their opening goal and when Livingston were pushing hard for an equaliser.

Adam Montgomery was a ball of energy up and down the left for Livingston, making some crucial interventions at the back and regularly popping up in advanced positions to aid the attack.

The standout stats

Livingston had almost twice as many shots - 15 to Kilmarnock's eight - with six of those on target.

Martindale's side made almost double the amount of passes, delivered more crosses, had much more possession, and far more touches in the opposing box.

Looking at that, they can feel hard done by not to have claimed the win.

What did they say?

Kilmarnock manager Stuart Kettlewell: "It's really frustrating. You point to big moments in games and the game turned on it's head with the red card.

"We felt we were really comfortable. But one or two things started to conspire against us. I believe [the penalty] is soft, the initial tug came from Robbie Muirhead. We feel harshly done by.

"Once we went down to 10, we were resolute. We limited Livingston to few chances. You believe at that point you're going to get through it, but it wasn't to be."

Livingston boss David Martindale: "We were a wee bit unfortunate not to win, but we're architects of our own downfall going in at 2-0 down.

"That felt a bit harsh, but we've only got ourselves to blame. They were two really poor goals to lose. That was the only two shots on target."

What's next for these teams?

It's a battle of the newly promoted sides on Saturday when Livingston host Falkirk (15:00 BST) while Kilmarnock travel to face Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday (15:00).
