  1. 'Spurs need to be better defensively'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 7 September

    Ellen White

I feel like they need to have in pre-season worked on being defensively more sound, not shipping goals and just being more compact as a team.

Hopefully they have had a good pre-season, they have built a good philosophy and togetherness and they are able to get points on the board at the start of the season.

  2. 'I will make sure Spurs will be competitive'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 7 September

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham finished 11th in the WSL last season, only one place outside the relegation zone and new manager Martin Ho believes the club do not "want to be in that position again."

Spurs posted just five wins and five draws from 22 games to finish 10 points ahead of the relegated Crystal Palace.

"It has to change. We have to look forward and be positive," Ho told BBC Sport.

"We will be competitive. I will make sure we we will be competitive.

"I will be heading and kicking every ball wit the players on the touchline. We are going to push. We need to make sure we don't finish in that position again and that's my job.

"We are not going to fear anyone but we will respect them. We need to be more brace and we need to set a marker in our first game [against West Ham]."

Ho said that Spurs are still in the transfer market "to evolve the squad."

"But we need to make sure it is the right player for the team," he added.

  3. Leicester up against itpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 7 September

There is a small pocket of Leicester supporters in the corner of the stand facing me.

They have made their voices heard but they must have travelled from the Midlands more in hope than expectation this afternoon.

They are rated as favourites to finish bottom of the table, which would put them into a play-off to save their top flight skins given the Women's Super League is expanding to 14 teams next season.

  4. Tsunoda 'needs time to settle'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 7 September

Brighton manager Dario Vidosic has warned that new signing Fuka Tsunoda should not be expected to slot straight into the first team.

The central midfielder is the third Japanese player at Brighton, after defender Moeka Minami and midfielder Kiko Seike, who he will look to to provide guidance to their international team mate.

"It all happened today but has been in the works a while," Vidosic told his media conference today. "She needs time to settle in and learn the language.

"We have two other Japanese internationals so she has support here. Today is my first chance to see her in training, and we will bring her up to speed as soon as possible."

Brighton will definitely be without another new signing, Maelys Mpome who they have acquired from Chelsea, as she recovers from injury.

Another club who have shown ambition in the window is Everton under new ownership The Friedkin Group.

They will be playing at Goodison Park this season which can only be a good thing and under manager Brian Sorensen, they have a clear identity on how they want to play.

The past few seasons they have had to dig in to finish mid-table and manage several injury issues. Now, they have more depth and quality to push on.

    Prediction: 6th

  7. 'Brighton will be aiming for top four'published at 11:51 British Summer Time 7 September

Brighton v Aston Villa (12:00 BST)

    Ellen White
England Euro 2022 winner on BBC Women's Football Weekly

I wasn't 100% sure what to expect of Brighton last year. They stamped their authority in the league to be in that top six and that is what they should be aiming for.

They had their best finish ever in the WSL. They have lost Nikita Parris but they've got Michelle Agyemang back on loan which is great for her and the club. All eyes will be on her, superstar at the Euros, she has something to prove as well.

I think they will be aiming for top four.

  8. United to miss out on Europe?published at 11:49 British Summer Time 7 September

Man Utd v Leicester (12:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter

While Manchester United have added some quality in Sweden internationals Julia Zigiotti and Fridolina Rolfo, plus England midfielder Jess Park in the transfer window, they lost Grace Clinton and look short in depth in areas.

I hoped to see more ambition over the summer to prepare them for Champions League football, especially when you look at the business done by other clubs around them.

They have a strong team and performed well last season which I think puts them in good stead, but I don't see them challenging for the title.

    Prediction: fourth

  9. 'Spurs have to turn it around'published at 11:48 British Summer Time 7 September

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 BST)

    Jen Beattie
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Women's Football Weekly

I'm worried for Tottenham, not going to lie. They were teetering on relegation last year and I don't know where it came from. It was one of the worst season's they'd had.

They have to turn it around. It is another level they have to go up. I am definitely worried.

  10. How do Reds overcome loss of Hinds and Smith?published at 11:46 British Summer Time 7 September

    Liverpool v Everton (12:00 BST)

It's been a very unsettling six months for Liverpool since the departure of former manager Matt Beard.

They fell behind in the summer when Gareth Taylor's appointment as permanent head coach was delayed by contractual issues from his time at Manchester City and that meant they were scrambling around for new signings to add depth.

In the end, they did some good business on deadline day, bringing in Risa Shimizu on loan from Manchester City and making Alejandra Bernabe's move from Chelsea permanent, giving them much-needed depth in full-back areas.

But it's hard to look past the loss of last season's top-scorer Smith and vice-captain Hinds, both to Arsenal. The squad is light and they will need to be busy in January.

    Prediction: 8th

  11. 'Everton will have a better season this year'published at 11:45 British Summer Time 7 September

    Liverpool v Everton (12:00 BST)

    Jen Beattie
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Women's Football Weekly

Everton started slow last season. I think their signings will be key. They've signed three internationals and when you have international signings coming in that will only boost your squad.

I am intrigued to see how Everton play. I think they will have a better season that last season for sure.

  12. Can Hammers end opening day hoodoo?published at 11:43 British Summer Time 7 September

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 BST)

    West Ham United

This afternoon West Ham travel across the capital to face London rivals Tottenham with the aim of ending their run of six straight WSL opening matches without a win.

While Rehanne Skinners side fell to a 2-1 defeat at Brisbane road last November, they did come from behind to win 2-1 in the League Cup in January before winning the return WSL meeting 2-0 in March.

Will the Hammers finally end their opening day hoodoo?

  13. 'Villa are difficult to predict'published at 11:42 British Summer Time 7 September

Brighton v Aston Villa (12:00 BST)

    Jen Beattie
Former Scotland defender on BBC Women's Football Weekly

Aston Villa were on the relegation line for the majority of last season and all of a sudden picked up form.

They have to take that form. They know they can get results and that is what is the most important.

They finished sixth last season. They are a team that is really difficult to predict but if you are in that dressing room you will think 'right we have to take that form into this year'.

  14. Where can I watch the Lionesses in the WSL?published at 11:41 British Summer Time 7 September

If you're tuning in today wondering where you can watch your favourite Lionesses from the summer's Euro 2025 triumph, then look no further.

BBC Sport's 'Ask Me Anything' team have plotted out which club each of the 19 WSL-based Lionesses play for, and where you can go and watch them across the country.

New Tottenham manager Martin Ho is hoping his experience managing Norway's SK Brann would come in handy as Spurs begin their WSL campaign against West Ham.

Ho, who was previously a key member of Marc Skinner's coaching staff at Manchester United, succeeded Robert Vilahamn at Spurs in July for his first assignment as head coach in English football.

"It's refreshing coming back to England and I think it's the right time for me to come back," Ho told BBC Sport.

"I was an assistant for almost 12 years but you can only do so much before you want to manager more."

"The opportunity to go away to a place where there is less media coverage on you and you can learn a bit more quietly and try different things as a head coach, it's probably the best experience I have had."

The 35-year-old from Liverpool led Brann to the quarter-finals of the 2023-24 Champions League, while also finishing runners-up in the Norwegian top flight in 2024 during his two-year stay.

"I am able to bring back that experience - not just in the domestic league but also in the Champions League against top teams like Lyon and Barcelona. I want to try to utilise that experience here in England," he added.

  16. Can Hobinger step up to the mark?published at 11:39 British Summer Time 7 September

    Liverpool v Everton (12:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Having lost top scorer Olivia Smith and vice-captain Taylor Hinds to European champions Arsenal this summer, Liverpool will have even more of a reliance on midfielder Marie-Therese Hobinger.

Only Katie McCabe (51) created more chances than Austrian in the WSL last season (47), while the Liverpool lynchpin was also their second highest scorer in the league with three goals.

It's a big ask for Hobinger to fill the shoes of world record departure Smith, but perhaps the Reds can become a more collective creative force this time round?

The arrivals of striker Beata Olsson from Kristianstads and Emilia Szymczak from Barcelona should help to ease that goal scoring and creating load.

  17. Man Utd have to find their own pathpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 7 September

Man Utd v Leicester (12:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter at Leigh Sports Village

Manchester United might be one of the richest football clubs in the world but in Women's Super League they are a few steps behind the really big hitters.

Chelsea, Arsenal and London City Lionesses have all spent big money on transfer fees this season. Manchester City paid more for Grace Clinton than United did for Jess Park.

But manager Marc Skinner and those running the women's side of the club know the United badge demands the club compete at the highest level.

On Thursday, they go to Norway to face Brann in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round tie. Victory for Skinner's side would be a significant step forward.

However, the wider point is United need to find ways of competing beyond simply spending more on transfers - which hasn't gone particularly well on the men's side.

    Liverpool v Everton (12:00 BST)

    Anfield Stadium

It's cold, it's wet and it's very windy at Anfield. I took this picture a few seconds before the water started to come and now my laptop is wet.

But other than that, it's poised for an intriguing Merseyside derby with big spenders Everton feeling confident at a ground they have enjoyed success at in the WSL.

Liverpool are yet to win a Merseyside derby here in the WSL and it's been a difficult few months with manager Gareth Taylor coming in late in the summer and the majority of their transfer business being conducted on deadline day.

They will need to get up to speed very fast as Everton boss Brian Sorensen has had some time to implement his ideas and has given six debuts to summer signings today.

  19. 'I'm a bit worried for Leicester'published at 11:36 British Summer Time 7 September

Man Utd v Leicester (12:00 BST)

    Ellen White
England Euro 2022 winner on BBC Women's Football Weekly

I'm a bit worried for Leicester, if I'm being honest. In the last few days they've lost Ruby Mace. I'm a bit worried in the sense are they going to be battling that relegation place.

They have some great individuals but hopefully they can get that bit of stability for those players.

  20. 'Excitement machine' Agyemang returns to Brightonpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 7 September

Fuka Tsunoda was the seventh signing Brighton made in this transfer window, but perhaps the most eye-catching is the re-signing of Michelle Agyemang on loan from Arsenal.

Agyemang became a household name during Euro 2025 as her late equalisers against Sweden and Italy helped save the Lionesses on their way to a second successive title.

Speaking at his media conference earlier, Brighton boss Dario Vidosic said Agyemang will have to learn to deal with greater attention on and off the field this season - but has the talent and mentality to do so.

"She doesn't feel like a new signing," Vidosic said of the striker, who also spent last season on loan at the Seagulls. "And the growth from the Euros, what she did with the national team, she has high ambitions for the season, we will help her as much as we can.

"She is a kid that loves to play, I will protect her as much as possible. I understand the fascination, she is an excitement machine with a nose for goal, she showed that at the Euros.

"But she is young, will face ups and downs, this season will be very different as the attention is a lot closer. But I have no doubt she will be important."
