Big disappointment that Newcastle are missing the opportunity to deploy possibly the first ever triple head band front three. Hopefully Woltemade sorts it out at half time.

That came after Nick Woltemade had put Newcastle in front.

Although, this picture suggests that he may have had to break the news to Sandro Tonali.

It was the Italian's volley that deflected in off Woltemade...

Anthony Gordon has taken over penalty duties from a certain Alexander Isak and the outcome of this one never looked in doubt.

He put it away with aplomb.

A pretty dominant half for Newcastle.

They enjoyed 61.2% of the possession, created three big chances with their front three all looking lively and limited Union to very little as well.

About as much as you could want from the first half of an away game in Europe.

  5. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:33 BST

    Union Saint-Gilloise 0-2 Newcastle

The end of a very good half for Eddie Howe's side.

Goals from Nick Woltemade and Anthony Gordon mean they're halfway to their first Champions League win of the season.

Nearly a quick response from Union Saint-Gilloise but Anouar Ait El Hadj puts his shot over the bar from just inside the box.

We'll have two minutes of added time.

What a difference in strikers. Woltemade scores without even shooting, while Isak is not even fit enough to lace his boots. Great for Newcastle. (Can you tell I’m a Newcastle fan?)

    Thumped into the bottom corner!

Confidently put away by Anthony Gordon, the goalkeeper dives to his right and the ball goes to his left.

Well-taken penalty and Newcastle are deservedly two goals up.

  10. PENALTYpublished at 41 mins

    Union Saint-Gilloise 0-1 Newcastle

Newcastle have a penalty as Anthony Elanga is brought down!

The winger has been lively all half and Fedde Leysen catches him with a late sliding challnge just after he had passed it.

Anthony Gordon will take the penalty...

That was one of those tackles. If it was a couple of years ago, he got the ball, it would have been play on but it just had too much force. It was a fantastic tackle for Van de Perre.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 39 mins

    Union Saint-Gilloise 0-1 Newcastle

    Another harsh yellow card.

Union's Kamiel Van de Perre seems to win the ball with a perfect slide tackle but the referee doesn't like it.

Too much force or some such, I'm guessing. Either way, it evens it up on the bookings front.

    Newcastle are almost in again.

Quick feet from Anthony Gordon, good strength and a nice pass from Nick Woltemade to free Anthony Elanga and the winger puts a low ball into the box.

Gordon is in there trying to convert but the defender does well. The loose ball does roll onto a Union arm but the defender had his back to it and knew nothing about it. Never a penalty.

Joelinton is shaking his head there. He feels he has been hard done. It's one of these things when you are on the European scene, you are going to be pulled up more.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 35 mins

    Union Saint-Gilloise 0-1 Newcastle

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton is the first player booked as he catches Anan Khalaili with a high boot.

He's no stranger to a yellow card but that did seem a little harsh with Khalaili's boot pretty high as well.

The Newcastle goal has now been credited to Nick Woltemade.

Replays show Sandro Tonali's shot deflected off the big centre-forward rather than Union defender Kevin Mac Allister.

He didn't know much about it but they all count and the striker's impressive start in black and white continues.

Anouar Ait El Hadj finds a bit of space and gets a shot away on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area.

It's deflected slightly and Nick Pope gathers with ease.

    Close!

Newcastle come forward again and Joelinton gets his head on a cross from the right.

Decent contact but it's just wide.
