BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says the club are still not entirely sure what the extent of Rodri's injury is but he has confirmed the midfielder will be out for an extended period of time.

But he is refusing to be downcast.

"When you are without the best midfielder in the world for a long time it is a big blow," he said.

"But my duty is to find a solution.

"When a player is irreplaceable, we have to do it as a team."

Matheus Nunes scored his first Manchester City goal to help edge Pep Guardiola's side into the EFL Cup third round with victory over Championship side Watford.

On a night when 16-year-old Kaden Braithwaite became the third-youngest player to start a game for City, and the youngest under Guardiola, Nunes followed up Jeremy Doku's fifth-minute opener with a precise first-half finish.

A £53m signing from Wolves just over a year ago, Nunes has not made the impact envisaged.

The Portugal international started just seven times last season and so far this term has been limited to just 20 minutes' Premier League action across three substitute appearances.

But Guardiola has not discarded Nunes in the same way he exiled another expensive midfield purchase, Kalvin Phillips, and just two days after the pulsating draw with Arsenal he stepped into the breach with an eye-catching display.

In addition to his goal, a low shot from the edge of the area that found the bottom corner, he also had a well-hit second-half shot saved by Watford keeper Jonathan Bond and had another goal-bound effort blocked.

Doku was one of two City starters who kept their place from the Arsenal encounter and he profited from Ryan Porteous' poor early backpass that allowed James McAtee to steal possession away from Bond. As the ball was recycled to the edge of the area, the Belgian applied the finish.

It helped condemn Watford to a 16th straight defeat against City, although given they had conceded 26 times in their past five losses alone, this could be regarded as a moral victory for Tom Cleverley's side, with Tom Ince giving them hope of taking the game to penalties with what turned out to be an 86th-minute consolation.

Christopher Nkunku scored a hat-trick as Chelsea cruised into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a convincing win over League Two Barrow at Stamford Bridge.

Nkunku opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a cool finish after a fine chipped pass from Joao Felix.

The forward soon added his second with a clever flick to divert Malo Gusto's low cross into the net, before a Felix free-kick hit the post and bounced in off Barrow goalkeeper Paul Farman to give the Blues a 3-0 half-time lead.

Two minutes after the restart Pedro Neto scored his first Chelsea goal by tapping in after Mykhailo Mudryk's pass across goal. Nkunku completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute after tackling keeper Farman and passing the ball into an empty net.

Thanks to his first Chelsea treble, the 26-year-old Frenchman now has six goals in eight appearances this season for the Blues. Nkunku was making his first start for the hosts since their opening-day defeat by Manchester City last month.

Premier League Leicester City squeezed through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on penalties at the expense of valiant underdogs Walsall.

The League Two side created the better openings over the 90 minutes but Charlie Lakin and veteran forward Albert Adomah failed to convert the pick of them.

Foxes goalkeeper Danny Ward proved the shootout hero, saving all three Walsall spot-kicks as Steve Cooper's side survived a big scare to progress.

Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen speaking to Sky Sports: "It is tough to come here and they are aggressive in the press. We stayed as a team and scored two goals and we have to stay tough with each other. We are really happy we got the win.

"I am happy to teg some minutes and keep the rhythm up. I just try to give my best. I am still learning and happy to be at Villa. Hopefully, many more minutes to come."

On Emi Buendia scoring: "He came from a long injury so I am happy to have him back here on the scoresheet and hopefully he can score plenty for us this season."

A much-changed Aston Villa reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup despite an underwhelming performance at League One Wycombe Wanderers.

Unai Emery's fringe players struggled to impress before Emiliano Buendia's looping 56th-minute header set the Premier League club on their way.

Emery made 10 changes in total but still had Ian Maatsen, whose last competitive start was for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley in June, and Jhon Duran in the starting line-up.

Duran has been in red-hot form off the bench this season, scoring four times in five substitute appearances in the Premier League.

But the 20-year-old Colombian striker fired wide when clean through in the opening minute before making it 2-0 in the 85th-minute from the penalty spot after he was brought down.

Wycombe were lively and had chances of their own, Kieran Sadlier firing straight at goalkeeper Joe Gauci, who produced a nervy performance on his senior debut, while Garath McCleary was denied by Gauci before Duran doubled Villa's lead.

They did manage a late consolation when subsitutte Richard Kone scored in stoppage time.

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa attacker Emi Buendia speaking to Sky Sports about his goal against Wycombe: "It was good and what I need to be more often, get in the box. Fortunately, the deflection came to me and I tried to head it as far as possible over the goalkeeper.

"[It is a] really special night. To come back and play for this club. I really love this football club so today to have the cup tie and to help the team with the goal is an amazing experience.

"We have a really big squad as we showed today. We have an amazing academy and today was a chance to show our quality. We try to play our game and keep going in our philosophy and we got the win."

    FT: Wycombe 1-2 Aston Villa

    Joe Jacobson
Former Wycombe Wanderers captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sometimes you can go into these games and show too much respect to the opposition. I think Wycombe got that right and showed them a bit of respect but still pressed them and threatened at the right times.

On another day Gareth McCleary puts one of those chances away, Richard Kone puts another away, and it's a different game.

Harsh on Wycombe, who also didn't field their first XI, remember. They played really well. Never a penalty, but difficult for the ref. Scoreline flatters Villa, but on we go.

At 2-0 you don't really think that penalty decision matters but had VAR been in play, it would have been a draw and going to penalties.

Wycombe can taker plenty of credit but they have been made to rue their missed chances. In the end, the quality of Aston Villa shone through.

Walsall deserve more than that. They should keep their heads up and are flying in League Two. They went toe-to-to with a Premier League team and forced them to penalties.

I think they can take that and improve on their league form even more.
