Will, Devon: Hi Phil, any thoughts on how Maresca is performing at Chelsea? I thought it was a mistake letting Pochettino go but early signs are very promising.

Phil: Hi, Will. Had reservations myself, both about Pochettino's departure and Maresca's appointment, but they have certainly looked very promising already this season, especially when winning at Wolves and West Ham.

No-one has ever doubted Chelsea have good players (almost too many of them if that’s possible) but the problem has been getting a structure and continuity. Maresca is showing signs of doing that, helped by the greater consistency shown by Nicolas Jackson.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca hinted that midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could start against Barrow: "I am very happy with Kiernan. We need to understand that he was the main player at Leicester and has arrived here as not one of the main players.

"For him, he needs to adapt now. That period you understand and adapt. I am happy with him how he is doing.

"It is different for him and a matter of adapting."

  5. 'We are ahead of where we expected to be today'published at 13:20 British Summer Time 23 September

Chelsea v Barrow (Tues, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on his side only being three points off Manchester City at the top of the Premier League: "We are ahead of where we expected to be today. Not in terms of results but how the team is progressing in terms of how they are playing.

"In terms of results, we are far from these clubs [at the top of the Premier League table] like City and Arsenal. I have said many, many times that we have to improve.

"The important thing in this moment is that we are heading in the right direction."

  6. 'A good chance to give some other players minutes'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 23 September

Chelsea v Barrow (Tues, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media ahead of his side's third round Carabao Cup tie against League Two table toppers Barrow on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge.

On potential squad rotation: "It is a good chance to give some other players minutes, like we did in the Conference League. Hopefully it is a good chance for them.

"It is not important because we want to win the competition, but important as it is an official game. We will try how we always try."

  7. Managers to comepublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 23 September

Defending champions Manchester City are top of the Premier League table after their draw with Arsenal but it does mean their winning streak ends in the league.

Arsenal are in fourth but are just two points off of City. Liverpool are second and Aston Villa are third.

The clubs are next in action in the EFL Cup with City playing Watford tomorrow and Arsenal competing against Bolton on Wednesday.

Phil McNulty Q&A: 'Ridiculous thing to do'published at 13:02 British Summer Time 23 September

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Tom, London: Hi Phil. Have Man City not just deliberately shifted the narrative with this ‘dark arts’ talk? They scraped a very last minute draw against ten men, at home. Yes, Arsenal did all they could to keep them out but why is it that we’re not talking about the most creative and clinical strike force potentially in the world, not being able to find a way through in 52 minutes? Also, why is nobody talking about Haaland completely getting away with unsporting behaviour while celebrating that goal?

Phil: Hello, Tom. Totally agree about Haaland. Ridiculous thing to do, especially at such a moment of high emotion, and he should have been punished. In referee Michael Oliver’s defence that was a real crowd scene after the goal and there was an awful lot going on

I think Manchester City were frustrated at the way the game went and their inability to break through ten-man Arsenal. I don’t think they will care for one second about all this “dark arts” criticism and the harsh words aimed at them by Bernardo Silva. They will probably take it as a compliment.

  10. No action further action to be taken by FApublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 23 September

    Man City 2-2 Arsenal

The Football Association will be taking no further action in regards any of the incidents from Sunday's game between Arsenal and Manchester City.

City striker Erling Haaland was seen throwing the ball at Gabriel's head after his side's late equaliser, and following the final whistle was caught up in an argument with Gunners striker Gabriel Jesus on the pitch.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has spoken on yesterday's draw and called Erling Haaland throwing a ball at Gabriel's head a "coward move".

Wright, who signed for the Gunners 33 years ago today, said on social media: "I just felt like I needed to put something out there which has been bothering me. Because obviously the Trossard sending off - of course, in the moment, you're frustrated.

"It's 2-1. And I'm thinking 'yes, we've got them'. And then we get sent off for something that, let's face it, is [expletive] foolishness - what they're getting sent off for now. So in the moment, yeah. Again, you shouldn't be sent off for that.

"But the one thing that boiled me up properly was Haaland's coward's move, bro. I saw it this morning properly. Throwing the ball in Gabi's head when he's not looking. When Gabi's back's turned to him. Real coward's move. Gabi would look him in the eye, you know. I'm looking at this as a really good defender vs striker for the years to come, them two. I love watching them two. And then you're doing a coward's move like that. No, no.

"That's what bothered me more than anything else. I thought you was bigger than that, bro. I thought you was bigger than that."

He has only had two full seasons in English football and is 24 years old breaking records like that. If he keeps getting the service, which he will, as he won't drop down a level from Manchester City, even if he moves to the likes of Real Madrid, he will always score goals if he gets given the service.

His finish against Arsenal was great. He didn't score against them last year, and there has been some talk about him not scoring in big games.

He looks at it. 100 goals at his age is amazing, let's see how quick he gets the next 100.

Haaland stats on how he has scored his 100 Man City goals

Haaland's record is scarcely believable when you consider he only joined City in 2022 in a £51m move from Borussia Dortmund, where he hit 86 goals in 89 games.

He has hit four or more goals against 11 different teams in a City kit. Wolves are his favourite opponents, with eight goals in four games against the Black Country side.

Haaland has scored seven in five against West Ham and six against Manchester United, RB Leipzig and - in just two meetings - Luton.

Including goals for Dortmund, Haaland has scored 12 goals in eight matches against Leipzig.

He has scored 73 Premier League goals for City, 18 in the Champions League, eight in the FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup.

Some 73 have come with his left foot, 14 with his right, 12 with his head and one that went in via his backside, against Chelsea.

He has scored 18 of his 20 penalties - and struck six from outside the box.

Haaland is 24 years and 63 days old - and this is his 235th goal in 271 games for top-flight teams.

By this age, Cristiano Ronaldo had scored 117 goals in 313 games for Sporting and Manchester United.

Lionel Messi had hit 184 goals in 274 games for Barcelona.

Haaland is the fourth player to score 100 goals under Pep Guardiola after Messi (211), Sergio Aguero (124) and Raheem Sterling (120).

Erling Haaland reached the latest landmark of his career as he hit his 100th goal for Manchester City in their 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal.

The Norway striker was making his 105th appearance - and his 100th start - in just over two years at the club when he reached the century at Etihad Stadium.

The goal came as he raced on to Savinho's through ball before slotting home in the ninth minute.

Haaland's goals have come at an average of one every 85 minutes.

He seems more prolific than ever this season - his 10 goals in the first five games of a top-flight season is the best start since Aston Villa's Pongo Waring in 1930.

It takes Haaland's career tally to 235 club goals - for Molde, Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and City - and 32 goals for Norway. He is only 24.

It also means he equals Cristiano Ronaldo's record at Real Madrid of fewest games needed to reach 100 goals for a team from Europe's top five leagues.

    Man City 2-2 Arsenal

Manchester City's Erling Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to reach 10 goals in as few as five games from the start of a season in the competition.

Until John Stones' goal, Erling Haaland had also scored each of Manchester City's last eight Premier League goals. Only Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers in October/November 1993 has ever scored more in succession for a club in the competition (nine in a row).

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and his players could not hide their pain in the pouring Mancunian rain as a statement win they would rate higher than any other was snatched away at the death.

The clock read 97 minutes and 14 seconds – those 14 seconds crucial to the chaotic conclusion – when John Stones rewarded Manchester City’s increasingly desperate efforts with an equaliser.

City manager Pep Guardiola led celebrations that smacked of victory rather than a point claimed at the last, this in itself a testimony to the tortuous experience this increasingly mature and steely Arsenal put them through.

Arsenal were heartbroken but when the bitter disappointment disperses they can look back on this brilliantly organised and brave performance, laced, it must be said, with high levels of gamesmanship, as further compelling evidence that they are the real deal.

This was billed as the clash of the Premier League heavyweights, the opportunity to inflict early psychological blows with City and Arsenal primed for a title race to the finish.

For once, the hype and high expectations were justified, with even the weather obliging with biblical conditions and black clouds overhead that set a mood of foreboding.

Phil McNulty Q&A: 'Branthwaite’s return can only be good for Everton'published at 12:07 British Summer Time 23 September

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Anon: Hi Phil, Toffees fan here. I’m optimistic that Jarred Branthwaite’s return will mean better defensive solidity for Everton but I am worried that, though we are finally scoring goals, our back line still won’t be watertight on his return. Do you think this is going to end up being a problem for Everton this season or is it a matter of time we see Dyche pull together the resilient, defensive style he’s known for?

Phil: I think Branthwaite’s return can only be good for Everton and Sean Dyche will hope the addition of Mangala in midfield can provide an even stronger defensive shield. Branthwaite has been badly missed.

He will certainly hope so because Dyche’s big quality, as it was last season, is making his teams difficult to score against, which has not been the case this term as Everton have conceded 14 league goals in five games.

Everton and Dyche need it to happen quickly because it’s been a dreadful start to the season – even with the one point they finally have on the board after the draw at Leicester City.

The Friedkin Group are in advanced discussions for a takeover of Everton after resuming talks with Toffees majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

Chairman Dan Friedkin, who also owns Serie A side Roma, had agreed a deal in principle to purchase current owner Moshiri's 94% stake in June.

But talks were called off a month later after the two parties failed to finalise an agreement, following Miami-based 777 Partners being unable to a complete a deal earlier this year.

In a complex saga surrounding the takeover, American businessman and Crystal Palace owner John Textor was then granted a period exclusivity in August.

Sources now suggest a deal could be "close" with the Friedkin Group.

The Friedkin Group, Moshiri and Everton declined to comment when approached by BBC Sport.
