  1. 'Flick sees Rashford as striker'published at 08:20 BST

    Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

All Barcelona fans heard was about the time at Manchester United where people seemed to still celebrate, based on social media this is, the fact that he wasn't scoring, that he wasn't at his best at Barcelona, that he hasn't shown the level that he's got.

I don't know why Man Utd fans are rejoicing when he doesn't succeed because they've still got to buy him, he's on loan.

But in any case what Barcelona coaches had seen was a shy guy. It has been difficult to get through to him as he was somebody that's been heard and wouldn't open up very easily.

He didn't have the kind of passion or whatever it is that Raphinha or Lamine have when they don't start the game but as Hansi Flick has said, they've seen his quality. And the interesting thing is they see him more of a nine.

They see that because he shows flashes of his ability on the left-hand side with the ball but without the ball he tends to forget that he has all this stuff to do and that's no good because that wing becomes very easy to attack.

Get Involved - Has Amorim made a mistake with Rashford?published at 08:18 BST

Is former Manchester United man Nicky Butt right?

Do you think Ruben Amorim is waking up and eating his cornflakes this morning questioning how he handled the Marcus Rashford situation?

Or is he beyond all of that now?

The United boss has his pre-Chelsea news conference later this afternoon and I bet you a penny that he's asked about the England man's performance on Thursday evening.

We'll be across that and all the other Premier League news conferences later on today.

  3. 'Rashford needs an arm around him'published at 08:11 BST

Former Manchester United midfielder on Champions League MOTD

Marcus showed what a top, top player he is. We forgot about his talent at Manchester United but he showed he is a real top talent and back to the old Marcus.

His work-rate as well, he was very positive in what he was doing. From a young boy he has always threatened a goal and the goal was an amazing header.

It was an unbelievable strike [for the second goal] and he has got that in his locker. He is a great striker of the ball and he was the best player.

Ruben Amorim will be thinking 'what have I done, I've let that go' when Manchester United are struggling. You need to be loved and he needs an arm around him and when he has that he has shown what he can do.

  4. 'These goals will help to get Rashford to the next step'published at 08:07 BST

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick on Marcus Rashford's performance: "We always see this from Rashford in training and we saw it here. I'm happy for him.

"In the offense we have a lot of good players and he's one. I'm happy to have him. He gives us more options to follow the match. It's great to have him.

"These two goals will help a lot to get Marcus to the next step. It's so important he has the confidence and feels OK. These goals are unbelievable for him for the next steps."

  5. 'Playing for Barcelona is an amazing experience'published at 08:03 BST

    Barcelona

Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford told TNT Sports: "[Playing for Barca is an] amazing experience. I've always been a huge admirer of Barcelona. We want to win as much as possible.

"They [fans] want to see the team win and play good football. This isn't an easy place to play football. THe first half was cagey. It's very difficult to play against this team.

"It was a split second, I felt there was a gap. I thought try to get a shot off. Their player was trying to block it so I tried to lift it. I knew when I caught it it would take the keeper some going to stop it.

"100% I'm full of excitement. I'm very motivated and determined. The quality we have in the team excites me. It's so refreshing to play with these players."

On Hansi Flick: "He's a top coach, a top man manager."

On their Champions League ambitions: "It's only to win it. Nothing else is on our minds. We know how tough the competition is."

  8. Is Rashford on road to redemption at Barcelona?published at 07:50 BST

    Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Marcus Rashford's latest stop on the road to redemption has led him to Barcelona and one of the elite stages in the global game.

The 27-year-old England forward who lost his way at Manchester United and was brutally exiled by head coach Ruben Amorim may have finally landed on his feet on loan at Barcelona, under the expert guidance of head coach Hansi Flick.

Many observers felt Rashford was fortunate to be afforded such a platform following an earlier loan spell at Aston Villa that was hardly stellar, and which was ended prematurely by a hamstring injury.

He will be as aware as anyone that if he falls short at Barcelona, he is unlikely to get another shot at a club of this stature.

And yet, in the space of nine stunning minutes of Barcelona's opening Champions League meeting with Newcastle at St James' Park, Rashford delivered a reminder of the thrilling talent he used to be - and still has time to be again.

To make Rashford's night even better, it was all done in front of watching England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who retains enough faith to keep including the forward in his squad despite the fact he has become something of a wandering star.

Rashford looked very dangerous and full of confidence, so fair play, but you need to see if he can play at this level constantly before too carried away. He will probably go to the World Cup as he has genuine pace and TT likes him.

    Barcelona

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick told TNT Sports: "It was a fantastic atmosphere. We saw how Newcastle were playing with high intensity. It's what we expected. We had the confidence and believed in our strengths.

"It's very important to get three points from the beginning of the season. Last year we lost to Monaco. It helps us to get better and better."

  13. 'It is impossible to play against Man City with 10 men'published at 07:35 BST

    Man City 2-0 Napoli

Napoli manager Antonio Conte, speaking to TNT Sports, said: "It's difficult to play against Manchester City 11 v 11 and after 20 minutes it is impossible with 10 men. Defensively we were really good but with their two goals we can do much better, but I don't have anything to tell my players - the commitment, the attitude was good.

"If it had continued 11 v 11 you could see another game in my opinion. We're talking about Manchester City, a fantastic team and we have to recover and prepare to play the next game. I come back to Italy with the mentality of the team and I like the way they suffered together but we can't concede two goals.

"We need to think about the next game in the league and I think we can do well in the Champions League."

  14. 'These nights are only magical for us if we win'published at 07:30 BST

    Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "Disappointing. We were really in the game. I never felt we were out of it. I'm disappointed we didn't score the first goal. That was crucial. We had the chances to do it. It was a whole-hearted gutsy display but maybe lacking the quality to get us the win.

"We wanted to create a difficult environment with high octane football. I think it was there. We didn't get the bounce of the ball off the presses.

"The chances were there in the first half. Against teams like this you won't get many. We got punished.

"Of course we can do better for both [goals]. The first more than the second. Disappointed he was allowed the cross [for the first]. Disappointed with how the ball arrived to him for the second.

"It was a good performance, strong effort. These nights are only magical for us if we win. But we'll learn and grow our game from nights like this.

"We kept going until the end. That's what we pride ourselves on. They managed the extra time well - we were desperate for the ball but couldn't get it off them."

  15. 'A perfect start to the Champions League campaign'published at 07:26 BST

    Man City 2-0 Napoli

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "Yes, it was [a perfect start to the Champions League campaign].

"We play a lot of minutes against 10. Italian teams are unbelievable [at defending]. I've faced them many many times in the Champions League. The resilience, the focus - I admire them so much.

"I'm very pleased. It's been a tough week [Manchester derby plus Napoli] and we have an incredibly tough challenge on Sunday [against Arsenal] but we are going there with a good feeling."

  16. Superb Rashford sinks Newcastle as Barcelona triumphpublished at 07:20 BST

Marcus Rashford made a spectacular Champions League bow for Barcelona as Newcastle United's campaign got off to a losing start at St James' Park.

Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, became Newcastle's tormentor when he broke open a tight encounter with two swift second-half goals.

In front of England head coach Thomas Tuchel, Rashford flashed a fine header beyond Newcastle keeper Nick Pope from Jules Kounde's cross after 58 minutes to silence a typically feverish Tyneside atmosphere.

Rashford produced an even better moment nine minutes later when he hammered home a stunning 20-yard drive in off the crossbar past the helpless Pope. These were his first Champions League goals in almost four years.

The England striker was given a deserved standing ovation from Barcelona's supporters when he was substituted with ten minutes left.

Newcastle were given hope of a comeback when Gordon slid home a finish at the start of seven minutes of added time, but Barcelona held out.

  17. Haaland breaks another record in victory over Napolipublished at 07:16 BST

Erling Haaland broke another record by becoming the quickest player to score 50 Champions League goals as Manchester City were made to work hard in their opening game victory over Napoli.

Haaland took only 49 games to reach the milestone, lofting home a header in the second half to set City on their way to three points, as Kevin de Bruyne's much-anticipated return to Etihad Stadium lasted a disappointing 26 minutes.

The Belgium international was sacrificed in the first half by boss Antonio Conte following captain Giovanni di Lorenzo's dismissal for bringing down Haaland as last man.

City took control of the game as expected but Pep Guardiola will have been left wondering how his side did not go in ahead at half-time after peppering the Napoli goal but finding keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in inspired form.

But 11 minutes into the second period City made the expected breakthrough as Haaland latched on to Foden's dinked pass and nodded in to finally breach Milinkovic-Savic's goal.

Jeremy Doku showed quick feet to add a second and seal victory, as returns to Manchester for former United players Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund ended in dismay.
