  2. 'Man Utd need a leader like Emi Martinez at the back'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on Transfer Deadline Day Summer 2025

My thing on the Man Utd defence is looking their defence there is Leny Yoro, who is quite inexperienced. There isn't a leader among the backline and you need a leader. There's Emi Martinez who's someone who will organise the back line, who'll be that voice on the pitch.

We talk about experience, the Man Utd shirt is heavy at the moment, heavier than it's ever been. There's an expectation to perform to the highest level.

Martinez would embrace that and there's others coming in and shrinking.

In case you missed that one earlier, Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial 21m euros (£18.1m) plus add-ons.

It brings to an end United's interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Bringing in Senne Lammens is a risk but one Man Utd look like they're willing to take.

  6. Deals off? Wednesday's hopes of additions look to be dashedpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 1 September

    Andy Giddings
    Sports reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

I am hearing all planned incoming transfers at Sheffield Wednesday are on the brink of collapse

Understand, at the 11th hour, the EFL have once again vetoed all attempts to sign players today, despite huge efforts from boss Henrik Pedersen and his recruitment team to add to the squad.

Lined up were Manchester United’s Harry Amass and Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey. There was also the possibility of at least two other players from Premier League clubs.

Sources say that Pedersen’s pitches were instrumental in getting any deals over the line, despite the fact that the Owls would be unable to contribute a penny to any wages due to the EFL’s stance.

This now isn't going to change until chairman Dejphon Chansiri commits to satisfying the EFL’s questions regarding his funding of the club.

  7. Chelsea’s summer of salespublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 1 September

The imminent transfer of Tyrique George to Fulham and Nicolas Jackson’s loan move to Bayern Munich means that Chelsea have now banked upwards of £300m – a Premier League record for player sales during a summer window.

The Blues had already surpassed their previous highest total of £215.9m – which was set in 2023 – prior to the confirmation of Christopher Nkunku’s departure to AC Milan on Saturday.

Noni Madueke is the club’s most expensive sale so far with the 23-year old joining Arsenal for an initial £48.5m fee which accounts for 16% of Chelsea’s 2025 summer income.

Three of the top four totals have come in this busy window, with Bournemouth selling the majority of last season’s defence plus Dango Ouattara to Brentford and Liverpool offloading a raft of players including Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Chelsea's income of more than £300m in this transfer window is a Premier League record
  8. 'I want a slice of that money'published at 18:23 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock

The other side to this is the agent side of it.

The signing-on fee is for the players, but Alexander Isak's agent is probably thinking 'I want a slice of that money'.

It is the British record, and he will want it on his resume because everybody will be going, 'he got that Isak move to Liverpool'.

Newcastle will be happy they got a decent fee for him, but they will not be happy as they have lost a player.

As a Palace fan I am so frustrated that we are breaking up our best ever team and appear to have left replacing Eze and Guehi until the last minute.

  11. DONE DEAL: Boro bring in keeper McLaughlin as Glover departspublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 1 September

Middlesbrough have signed veteran goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

The 37-year-old, who had been training with Boro for the past six weeks, will provide cover for Sol Brynn and Seny Dieng.

The former Scotland international comes in after the Championship side released Tom Glover.

The 27-year-old Australia international made 29 appearances for the club after joining from Melbourne City in the summer of 2023.

What you have to think is Virgil van Dijk is not going to be at the club forever.

You need someone who has that leadership quality at the back. Marc Guehi is not the most vocal leader, but he is a leader on the pitch.

He is demanding things off people, he is moving people into areas. So often we saw that with James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Andy Robertson.

They were Jurgen Klopp's voices on the pitch. He is an outstanding player and he will be a great addition to Liverpool.

  14. Postpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 1 September

That Marc Guehi transfer depends on whether Crystal Palace can sign a replacement. That doesn't seem guaranteed yet.

No rush though, the deadline isn't for another, oh, 44 minutes.

  15. 'Guehi is a smarter defender' than Konatepublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on Transfer Deadline Day Summer 2025

Liverpool need a centre forward because they have lost Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and also the sad loss of Diogo Jota.

In the last few weeks, they have been bringing Federico Cheisa off the bench. Cheisa hasn't been in the greatest form since joining Liverpool.

In a defensive position, they defensively needed someone. Ibrahima Konate is injury-prone, Joe Gomez has his injury issues.

    They need reinforcements in defence.

They are light in that area - Marc Guehi comes into the club, and he goes in as the number one centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk.

I think Guehi is a smarter defender [than Konate].

  16. DONE DEAL: Hadziahmetovic join Hull Citypublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 1 September

    Amir HadziahmetovicImage source, Getty Images

Hull City have signed Besiktas midfielder Amir Hadziahmetovic on a season-long loan deal.

The 28-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international has spent the majority of his playing career in Turkey.

He joins a Tigers side who have won one, drawn one and lost two of their opening four Championship matches this season.

  17. 'Donnarumma is unorthodox with his feet'published at 18:11 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on Transfer Deadline Day Summer 2025

I think it is fascinating when we think of Joe Hart's career at Man City.

He was an outstanding shot-stopper, but he couldn't play with his feet and Gianluigi Donnarumma is a bit unorthodox with his feet. He isn't the most comfortable coming for crosses.

So, I think it will be fascinating if he signs, how he adapts to the Premier League.

Another example of something that would usually be the headline news is Manchester City's attempt to sign Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Let's see what one of our pundits thinks about that potential move.

This was our recap of last year's summer deadline day...

"After Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal on a season-long loan, the Blues confirmed the signing of Manchester United's Jadon Sancho on a similar arrangement.

"England striker Ivan Toney was also a late mover - completing a £40m move from Brentford to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

"Before allowing Sancho to leave, Manchester United splashed out the highest fee on the day - signing Paris St-Germain and Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte for an initial £42.1m, which could rise to £50.5m after add-ons.

"That made it one in, one out in central midfield for United after Scotland international Scott McTominay's move to Serie A side Napoli for £25.7m was also confirmed.

"Elsewhere, forward Eddie Nketiah joined Crystal Palace from Arsenal in a deal worth in the region of £30m but Chelsea were unable to get a striker signing of their own done as a move for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen did not materialise.

"Early in the day, Arsenal also sold goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for £25m."

  20. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 1 September

Usually one of the top deals of the day would be something like Wolves paying £24m for Genk and Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare.
