  2. Isak 'the most talked about striker in European football'published at 21:36 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on Transfer Deadline Day Summer 2025

Isak to Liverpool seems like it's the right fit for the player because of what he has done over the last few years in the Premier League. He is arguably the most talked about striker in European football at the moment because of the numbers he's racking up.

Not just because of the goals he scores, but individually how he can take people on and create his own goals. The price is OK for him, it's not bad.

As a Red, I'd have taken Marc Guehi over Alexander Isak. Defence and clean sheets has worried me far more than scoring goals.

  4. 'Pre-season is there for a reason'published at 21:34 British Summer Time 1 September

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on Transfer Deadline Day Summer 2025

On how Isak fits into Liverpool with fellow new signing Ekitike and a lack of pre-season:

One of the issues that Liverpool have with Isak is that he hasn't had a pre-season. One thing we know is that he has missed a few games throughout his Newcastle career with niggling injuries and without a pre-season and having not played in the first three competitive games of the season, it could take them a month to six weeks to get him on the field.

They know there's time because Gakpo is playing well, Ekitike has started very well and they've got Salah on the right hand side and we know his numbers.

As much as there's not a rush, there's got to be care and consideration for Isak to make sure that when he does get on that pitch he doesn't break down. Pre-season is there for a reason. It's there to build sustainability, durability throughout the season. He needs more durability as there are more games in the season when you play for Liverpool.

Alexander Isak has gone for a huge, British-record sum - but departure statements do not come much shorter.

Newcastle United's farewell is just 37 words long and, unsurprisingly, there are no thanks or well wishes.

In fact, it is rather telling that there is not even a mention of Isak scoring the goal that helped Newcastle end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy in the Carabao Cup final back in March.

"Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee," it read. "The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."

"I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my team-mates and the fans, and getting back out there.

"I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.

    "I want to win everything."
