Chelsea v Wolves (Mon, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has faced the media before his team take on Wolves in the Premier League on Monday. He was first asked about Reece James' fitness: "For Reece it is not about if he scores goals or how many minutes, it's just to manage him. We are going to see. If he plays 45 minutes he can be ready but we don't want to risk [him]. We don't want him to get injured again."

And on Trevoh Chalobah: "It is quite an easy process [getting him back]. We have quite a few injuries and we were looking for a solution so we called back Trev. First of all we know him very well, second we are sure he can [impress]."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden scoring twice against Brentford: "It is not bad how he is doing lately. His mood and his smile has to count.

"In the first part of the year I was a little concerned and he was a bit more down. But sometimes you need to breathe and come back. His natural talent will do the rest."

  9. 'Exceptional news'published at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time

Ipswich v Man City (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Haaland breaking more Premier League records: "If he continues with the numbers since he arrived, then yes. It will depend on the team and him, but it is exceptional news for the club."

On the striker's motivations: "I don’t know I’ve not asked him. Maybe winning the next game and motivation to score goals. I don’t have a feeling that he is going to say 'I’ll take a nap' now that he has this contract. He is a huge competitor.

"He loves the club and the people he is around. He loves the Premier League and living here with his family. He must feel there is no better place for him to be in the next 10 years."

  10. 'It’s proof of trust between him and the club'published at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time

Ipswich v Man City (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland's long contract and how he can improve: "He wants to show much he wants to be here otherwise all the players sign one or two year contracts. In 10 years many things can happen but it’s proof of trust between him and the club.

"You never know what may happen in the next years but the club know how professional he is every day to show his talent.

"It was what he wanted and that is down to the trust of the club.

"Of course he can improve. We all can. The club and the team have to create an environment and moments when he can be unstoppable. That is when he is at his best. More than anything it is about understanding the game, during the game and what decisions he has to make.

"He is still young and with maturity of playing games and games it will happen naturally."

  11. 'It is a win-win for player and club'published at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time

    Alan Shearer
    Former England striker

"My record will go one day. There were great goal scorers before I was born that have incredible records as well. I know the Premier League started in 1992, but my record will go one day I'm sure of that.

"As well as what this means for his [Haaland's] career and for City’s chances of future success, from a business perspective and from both parties’ point of view, this is a deal that works.

"He has signed a bigger contract, so he gets more money, and City get to protect their asset – it is a win-win for player and club.

"This contract does not mean he is guaranteed to stay. I would still be surprised if he was still at City when he is 34 when this new contract ends. But this means that they can hold on to him for longer, and also no-one can come and get him for cheap if he decides he wants to leave."

  12. 'I don’t think anyone saw that coming'published at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time

    Alan Shearer
    Former England and Newcastle striker

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer says that Erling Haaland signing a new 9.5 year track "was a bit of a surprise" due to its length.

"I don’t think anyone saw that coming, an incredibly long contract. Congrats to him but it is a bit of a surprise.

"If he stays for that long no doubt he will break that record [all-time top scorer in the Premier League]. It might be someone else’s by then – like Harry Kane or Mo Salah.

"But there is no doubt if, and a big if, because such a long contract and takes him to 34, he should have a Premier League record goal-scoring wise.

"It’s good news for the Premier League because we want all the best players in our league, not so good for the defenders who are going to be chasing his tail for many years to come."

  17. Pep on Haalandpublished at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time

Ipswich v Man City (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

We are just waiting for Pep Guardiola to come into the media room to begin his pre-match news conference.

In theory, it should be a look ahead to Sunday's trip to Ipswich.

I suspect that will be some way down the agenda of conversation topics.

We need to get past transfers. And before that, Erling Haaland and his new contract.

  18. Are Man City copying Chelsea's model with long contracts?published at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    Kieran Maguire
Football finance expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think so. From a PSR point of view you're limited to five years for amortisation purposes. The rules were changed after Chelsea sort of introduced that model.

Where it is copying Chelsea's model is that they're protecting the asset. Haaland is 24. He is halfway through his original five-year contract and once you get into that last two years the balance of power starts to shift towards the player more than the club, as City would have observed at Liverpool.

What they have here is a long-term commitment which protects Haaland's value in the market. From what I'm reading there is is no release clause until 2029 and even when that kicks in, it's at a very high fee.

Worst case scenario he decides to go elsewhere, nobody can leverage over (City) in terms of what we're seeing at Liverpool in terms of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold. I think it's a smart business decision from City. it's an expensive decision but it's one they could afford.

  19. Any link between Haaland contract and Premier League charges?published at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time

    Kieran Maguire
Football finance expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

No, they're completely independent from one another. We're seeing Manchester City potentially signing players for £140-150m in the next few days.

Everybody at Manchester City are quietly confident (on the charges outcome) but they simply don't know. They're acting on a 'business as normal' basis.

  20. What's Haaland's motivation to sign such long term deal?published at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time

    Kieran Maguire
Football finance expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

If the stories are true, combined with the deal that he has at Nike he's on £1m-a-week. That already makes him one of the best paid players in world football. Therefore there was a very restricted numbers of alternative clubs to which he could have signed for.

Every time you play football you are one tackle away from the end of your career. He'll have seen what happened to Rodri who was a Ballon d'Or winner.

He's protecting his own future. If he says to City in two years' time that he wants to go, they'll let him go, they won't stand in his way. But what they will have down is that they'll be able to extract something like £160m to £200m for him, whereas the original contract that he signed had a release clause that was considerably lower. The release clause is gone.

He benefits because he improves his pay, City benefit because they will probably double what they could get from him if they do sell him.
