Chicago Fire are in talks over a surprise move to bring Brazil striker Neymar to Major League Soccer.

The 32-year-old is out of contract with Al-Hilal in the summer after two years in the Saudi Pro League.

The Eastern Conference side would be able to make the deal work financially and negotiations are continuing with the Pro League and Neymar's representatives, but sources have told BBC Sport the transfer is not close to being done and remains complicated.

Neymar has not been registered for the Pro League by Al-Hilal this season and it is now up to Brazil's all-time record scorer to make a decision on where he wants to play.

He joined Al-Hilal from PSG in 2023 for £77m but has played just seven times, mainly due to a serious knee injury he suffered just two months after moving.

The MLS transfer window opens from 31 January until 23 April.

Fire, who finished bottom of the Eastern Conference last season, had Neymar on their Discovery List. MLS clubs can have up to five players on their list, meaning no other side in the league can speak to, or sign, Neymar unless Chicago agree.

He added on goalkeeper Nick Pope, who is coming back from a knee injury: "I think tomorrow might be a little bit too early. Certainly, he is going to be close for next week. "I think, I do not want to change the rhythm he's in and it's about for both the team and for Alex it's about not thinking too deeply and going into games with a good frame of mind, enjoying your football and trying to carry on the form that he's in."

"Everything off of the pitch will naturally fall into place with what he does on it. I'm sure there are lots of positive things in the future for him but at the moment I want him to concentrate on scoring."

Txiki Begiristain just had to mention "humility" when discussing Haaland didn't he. Given all the "stay humble" memes doing the rounds, that is an unfortunate choice of words.

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Darwin Nunez's confidence: "I don't have the perception that he is struggling with self-confidence. He was involved in Accrington Stanley for the first goal and also with the goal against Fulham that Jota scored and he scored one against Southampton.

"For me, it's the life of a striker, sometimes you score sometimes you don't and he hasn't started every single game, so the most important thing for me is that as a team we can score in every single game. We have so many goals in our team and Darwin will score his goals like he does for this club already."

Manchester City's Erling Haaland is not the only player in the Premier League on a big deal.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer signed a two-year contract extension in 2024 which keeps him at the Blues until 2033. Nicolas Jackson's Blues deal also runs out in 2033.

Chelsea also have Enzo Fernandez on their books until 2032 and the likes of Moises Caicedo and Renato Veiga until 2031.

West Ham have Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Max Kilman on contract until 2031.

And while these deals are huge, there are bigger ones in other sports.

Baseball has seen massive contracts signed in recent years with the biggest seeing Juan Soto sign a 15-year deal with the Mets. The deal was also worth an eye-watering $765 million (£627m).

  16. City Premier League goal-scoring recordpublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time

Erling Haaland may be 61st on the Premier League all-time scoring list but he is third for Manchester City.

Only two players have scored more top-flight goals for Pep Guardiola's side, do you know who they are? We'll give you a second to think about it.

Yes, you're right. It is Raheem Sterling and Serigo Aguero.

Sterling played 225 top-flight games for City and scored 91 goals to be the club's second highest scorer. Aguero played 275 and scored 184.

Haaland is currently on 79 Premier League goals in 87 games.

Re: Haaland. Great striker but not as good an all-round player as Shearer was. Shearer was the complete #9 and Haaland does have weaknesses in his game. Shearer also never played in a team as dominant as City have been.....

  18. Premier League 'more difficult' than Eredivisiepublished at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on if this weekend's Brentford game can put pressure on Arsenal: "No, I didn't even know that they were playing later than us I only look at the opponent we have to face and it's a tough one. Brentford I think was my first Premier League game, and I thought that if this was going to be the resistance that we face every week then this going to be a more difficult league than Eredivisie.

They [Brentford] have had a really good season up until now. They had a 2-2 draw with City which was a great game, both teams were creating a lot of changes and their manager has done an amazing job for so many years."

  19. 'Important' Jota might be missing next gamepublished at 10:27 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Diogo Jota's fitness: "There is no doubt in the fact that Jota is an important player for us. But he wasn't training yesterday, so today we have to wait and see to decide if he'll be available for us tomorrow.

"He felt a little niggle during the half an hour that he played in the last game, and he could finish the game but afterwards, he complained a bit about it."
