I think Ancelotti being described as the greatest ever manager ignores that his legacy doesn't actually have much except trophies. Sure, it's difficult to rival that, but in terms of legacy? I don't think I'd ever be sold on the idea he's the greatest because he's not really brought anything notable to the tactical table in the way that Guardiola, Van Gaal, Cruyff, Rangnick, Sacchi, Lobanovskyi, Maslov, or Conte have.

  5. Where are Brazil ranked in world football?published at 15:42 British Summer Time 12 May

Gone are the days of five-time World Cup winners Brazil looking down on the rest in the Fifa world rankings. However, they are still in the top five as of 3 April 2025 (the next update is on 10 July).

Holders Argentina are top followed by Spain, France, England in fourth and then Brazil in fifth.

Carlo's coaching abilities shouldn't be questioned. Right now, Carlo Ancelotti is the greatest coach ever. So, if he ends up winning the World Cup with Brazil, this debate is over.

  7. When did Brazil last win the World Cup?published at 15:36 British Summer Time 12 May

It's hard to believe Brazil last lifted the World Cup in 2002.

On a June night in Yokohama, Japan, two goals from Ronaldo secured the biggest prize in football as Brazil claimed a deserved victory over Germany in the final.

It was their fifth trophy, cementing their status as the most successful team in the history of the competition.

Luiz Felipe Scolari was in charge back then and former captain Cafu, who became the first player to appear in three successive finals, accepted the trophy in an emotional prize-giving ceremony.

If Ancelotti wins the 2026 World Cup with Brazil, he goes down as the greatest of all time.

The culture at Real Madrid really is die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Kroos did a good job retiring when he did, and I hope Modric does the same. Ancelotti really has won it all with them, and from the last couple months you'd think he was their worst manager ever!

  11. What has Ancelotti won as a manger?published at 15:22 British Summer Time 12 May

What hasn't this guy won. While Carlo Ancelotti has never managed a national side, his club trophy cabinet is fit to burst.

    • Won league titles in Spain, England, France, Italy and Germany
    • Lifted five Champions League trophies - three with Real Madrid and two with AC Milan
    • Won two Club World Cups during his two stints at Real
    • Delivered an FA Cup at Chelsea, Spanish Super Cups with Madrid, German and Italian Super Cups while managing Bayern Munich and Milan.

Basically, he's won pretty much everything there is to win at club level.

It's hard to rival Carlo Ancelotti's honours in management.

He's won the league title in each of Europe's top five divisions and now he's looking to top it all off with a World Cup next year.

If he does that with Brazil, does he go down as the greatest coach in the world? Or is he already able to lay down that claim?

  13. Will Neymar be involved?published at 15:15 British Summer Time 12 May

Neymar admitted he nearly retired following Brazil's shock exit from the World Cup in 2022.

Sine then, the 33-year-old has returned to his boyhood club Santos, featuring 11 times in 2025. In that time, he has scored three goals and assisted a further three more, but he has missed the last few games with a hamstring injury.

Neymar was recalled to the Brazil squad after a 17-month absence for their most recent World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.

However, he was forced to withdraw through injury and was replaced by Real Madrid's 18-year-old Endrick.

The question remains on whether Ancelotti views Neymar as part of his plans with the national side.

  14. How did Brazil perform at the last World Cup?published at 15:09 British Summer Time 12 May

At the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Brazil were knocked out by Croatia on penalties at the quarter-final stage.

Head coach at the time Tite left his position shortly after the shock exit, with many considering Brazil the favourites for the tournament.

In six years of charge, Tite managed Brazil through two World Cups, but failed to get past the last eight on both occasions.

However, he did lead the nation to glory at the Copa America in 2019.

Can Ancelotti take Brazil further in 2026?

  15. Who is Ancelotti replacing at Brazil?published at 15:05 British Summer Time 12 May

    Dorival JuniorImage source, Getty Images

Dorival Junior was appointed the national team boss in January 2024 but the 63-year-old only lasted 14 months in the job.

The Brazilian was sacked after that loss to arch rivals Argentina in March with a record of seven wins, six draws and three defeats in his 16 games in charge.

  16. How are Brazil performing in the World Cup qualifiers?published at 15:01 British Summer Time 12 May

Brazil currently sit fourth in their World Cup 2026 qualifiers table, with four games left to play.

The top six automatically qualify for the tournament, whereas the seventh-placed team enters the intercontinental playoffs.

Brazil sit six points above Venezuela in seventh, so with four games to go they should qualify without too much trouble. However, after their most recent 4-1 defeat against the already qualified Argentina, there has been some concern about how Brazil may perform at the next World Cup.

Brazil have won just four of their eight games since losing to Uruguay on penalties in the quarter-finals of the Copa America last summer.

The disrespect for Don Carlo by the Real Madrid board is ridiculous. His record in the CL is unmatched, but what do you expect when the fan base booed a player who averaged a goal every 80 odd minutes for nine years straight! Nothing is good enough for this club, at all.

  19. Who will be Real Madrid's next manager?published at 14:46 British Summer Time 12 May

    Xabi AlonsoImage source, Getty Images

With Carlo Ancelotti now confirmed as the new Brazil boss, that leaves a vacancy at the Bernabeu.

The favourite to fill the Italian's seat at Real Madrid is Xabi Alonso, who announced on Friday he will be leaving German side Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

According to BBC Sport columnist and Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, Real want 43-year-old Alonso in place as their new manager in time for the start of next month's Club World Cup.

Sources say the plan is for Alonso to travel to Madrid on 1 June to prepare the team for their first game of the inaugural Fifa tournament on 18 June against Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami.
