In hindsight Ange bemoans injuries but says if he’s got a full squad then Spurs are good. So just do no training at all until the final. Let them go for a gentle walk through the country or play computer games. Get the tactics boards out and drink herbal tea. Otherwise Johnson’s training injury may not be the last.

  4. Record-breaking Europa League final?published at 14:30 British Summer Time

    Good question, John.

Since it became the Europa League in the 2009/10 season, Sevilla currently hold the record as the lowest league position to win the Europa League... They finished 12th in 2023.

In fact, Sevilla are the only team to ever win the competition and finish their domestic league campaign outside the top 10.

Of all the 30 previous Europa League finalist teams, just one other side has reached the final after finishing outside the top 10 in the league - Fulham in 2010 as they also finished 12th.

So, I guess you could say Man Utd and Spurs will be record-breakers?

  5. 'I always win things in my second year'published at 14:27 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

"I always win things in my second year."

Tottenham may not be used to winning trophies, but Ange Postecoglou has had his hands on plenty.

If his quote from earlier this season is correct - he will be adding another to his collection.

    He has won:

    • 2010-11 A-League Premiership (Brisbane Roar)
    • 2015 AFC Asian Cup (Australia)
    • 2019 J1 League (Yokohama F. Marinos)
    • 2022-23 Domestic treble (Celtic), also won Scottish Premiership and League Cup in 2021-22

Ange is completely delusional. If elite footballers are unable to play twice a week then there is something wrong with your training and coaching methods. They are being trained too hard and their conditioning isn’t being taken care of. If a squad like ours can only play on one front or focus on only one competition then that’s a failure on him and his staff. Most teams fight on multiple fronts that’s what being a ‘big’ team is all about. He won the treble at Celtic multiple times, is he finally admitting that this league is too much for him? If so, you’re free to go, no Spurs fan will stop you.

  8. 'I've done a lot of heavy lifting'published at 14:14 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou: "The year before I took over we were eighth and didn't even qualify for Europe.

"So it's not like we came and just needed to do the last bit.

"I've done a lot of heavy lifting, focus on young players - it's about trying to change a whole range of things.

"I could be sitting here fifth last year, fifth this year and OK, maybe people wouldn't be waiting for the white smoke to see if it's my last one but they'd still be saying 'that's great but it's been done before - until this club wins something you haven't made an impact'.

"I knew that is what my tenure is going to be judged and measured on."

  9. Postpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou: "The challenges of this year have made it feel like it's harder.

"I've had stuff happen this year that I've not had before in my career and events out of your control make it harder.

"The attention the league and the club get makes it feel more of a push to get it where you want to.

"Some others clubs there are less barriers to overcome. Here it feels like there are quite a lot.

"We've given ourselves an opportunity and now it's about taking that opportunity."

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou: "Finals don't around too often - the last one was five or six years ago - so when they do, you want to take that opportunity.

"You can't just assume it'll come again next year or the year after."

  11. 'I've made players aware of the significance'published at 14:04 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on ending Spurs' trophy drought: "There have been some world-class players who have played here for world-class managers and you need to understand the history and the magnitude of the task at hand to understand how difficult it will be and how significant it can be.

"One of the constants since I arrived is about how we can achieve what others haven't been able to.

"It's not just about ability, it's sometimes just the luck you need going your way. But to have that luck, you need to put yourself in the position to have that success.

"I've made sure the players are well aware of the significance of what they're trying to achieve."

More from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on Son's fitness: "We'll get him some minutes on Friday and if he trains right through he'll be OK.

"He's worked hard to get back. It's a bit of a funny injury. It was just how he progressed and how he felt.

    "Hopefully he kicks on now."

More from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on Son: "It's about getting him ready to play and making decisions from there.

"It's nothing more than that. In finals, there are always moments and players who can change it.

"But it's about a collective effort and more than just individuals on the day."

This Spurs v United final, has there ever been a European final when both the finalists were as low down in their domestic leagues or had as many combined losses, or is this a new 'record'.

  15. 'Until you win, you're fair game'published at 13:50 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on impact of Man Utd voices in media: "It depends. There's no doubt the comments of the Bodo players had an impact on the group.

"They were quite to make sure those questions got answered. But again, that's the hurdle this club has to overcome.

"Until you actually do it, you're fair game for people to say 'you always fluff it on the big stage'.

"Irrespective of what the opposition or anyone else says, you've got to break that cycle and whatever motivation you need to do that, you tap into."

  16. 'A special opportunity'published at 13:47 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on his experience in finals: "They are different, they're standalone events.

"You walk into knowing it's going to be different to any other game you're going to play.

"Every game is important but you know the significant of what's at stake. You're never too far away from the eyeline of the trophy that you're going to get.

"It takes a lot out of you emotionally and physically on the day. The players need to try and prepare as they always but you can't ignore the fact it's a different feeling.

"I try and find the fine line between treating it as you normally would and the fact it's a special opportunity we need to take and sometimes it takes something more than normal to get you there."

  17. 'Trophy win can be a turning point'published at 13:43 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on importance of winning the Europa League: "For me, personally? Great. It's another trophy I can reminisce about in my old age.

"But more importantly, what it means for the club. It's the significance of what it does to the people who really impact you.

"A lot of the success I've had has been pretty significant. Yokohama hadn't won a championship for 14 years, Australia had never won a continental championship, Celtic was one year but trust me, that's a long time in Scotland. They had to wrestle back the dominance they had for so long.

"You look at the historical backdrop of this club and what sort run it's been on for the last 20 years, I feel [winning a trophy] could be a turning point for the way the club is perceived. But also how it perceives itself - which is the biggest thing.

"Because until you do that, until you do that, people will say 'well you haven't won anything'."

Mike (Re: Reguilon's tackle): Spurs must be the unluckiest team in the world at the moment, preparing for a final against UTD and the player we loaned them who’s just come back accidentally slide tackles Johnson and injures him!! Maddison and Kulusevski both injured, it’s looking like they won’t even be able to put out a fit enough squad already so I don’t think it will be a silverware season for them after all.

Not to mention Reguilon and Johnson were on the same team in training, Mike!

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on the run to the final: "In the knockout stages, Alkmaar away wasn't great but from Alkmaar at home, it was a case of 'everything we've worked for has been for this purpose'.

"We've been really clear on what we need to do."

  20. 'Never sensed players lost belief'published at 13:34 British Summer Time

Tottenham v Man Utd (Wed, 21 May, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on maintaining belief: "As a manager, that's the key to everything, how much belief the people - not just the players and the staff - have.

"When everything is going well, that sort of thing takes care of itself but it's fair to say we haven't had smooth waters this year.

"There was the opportunity for players to question and lose a big of faith and belief - but I never sensed that.

"Even in the most difficult of times, they still embraced the fact that if we continue down this road, we can achieve something."
