  2. Coventry's Palmer suspended for FA Cup semi-finalpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024

Coventry City are set to miss attacking midfielder Kasey Palmer for their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United next month through suspension.

Palmer, who started in Coventry's dramatic 3-2 win over Wolves on Saturday, was shown a yellow card in stoppage time for running onto the pitch in kit to celebrate Haji Wright's dramatic late winner, despite having already been taken off in the match.

After receiving the card, Palmer tweeted: "Favourite yellow card of my career by a mile."

However, as the caution was Palmer's second in the FA Cup this season, he will serve a one-match ban for their Wembley semi-final against the Red Devils next month.

United winger Amad Diallo, who was sent off after scoring their winning goal against Liverpool on Sunday, will not be suspended for the semi-final, but instead serve a suspension for United's Premier League fixture with Brentford on 30 March.

Unlike yellow card suspensions, red card suspensions are not competition-specific.

Matt in Derby: Phil, what are your thoughts on the PL and EFL not coming a funding deal? As a supporter of a National League team that nearly went out of business (Southend), I'm keen to see the money in the game more evenly distributed, but understand that PL clubs aren't a charity. What do you think should happen?

Phil McNulty: My view is that the Premier League does need to find a way to help funding for clubs lower down the pyramid, such is the financial imbalance and the serious struggles faced by so many lower league clubs.

This one might be a job for an independent regulator if no deal can be struck.

Chris in Chester: Phil I am with you on VAR. why can’t we just reinstate the ‘clear and obvious’ bit - a suggestion which itself seems to be “clear and obvious”?

Phil McNulty: Whatever became of “clear and obvious”, Chris? If something takes six minutes to resolve it cannot be “clear and obvious” can it?

  5. GMP confirm eight arrests at Man Utd v Liverpool FA Cup tiepublished at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that eight men were arrested and one was charged at the FA Cup quarter-final tie between Manchester United and Liverpool on Sunday.

Five Liverpool fans and three Manchester United fans were arrested.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs, two men were arrested on suspicion of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress through chanting, one was for suspicion of possession of a pyrotechnic and one arrest was on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Eddie in Kent: Good afternoon Phil, a couple of questions. Why once again does VAR ignore a high boot into Harry Maguire’s chest? It is clearly a dangerous situation and barely gets much of the ball. Do you think yellow cards for taking your shirt off should be scrapped? A player’s emotions can get the better of them and it doesn't do anyone any harm?

Phil McNulty: Agree re. yellow cards for taking a shirt off, Eddie. I don’t think we need to see flesh on display after every goal but I honestly don’t see what harm it does and the emotion from Amad Diallo yesterday was perfectly understandable in the circumstances.

Might be wise to tell the players to try not to do it, though – while admitting there may be exceptional circumstances.

I’m afraid it’s a simple answer on Maguire. Either never saw it or never saw enough for a referral.

Well, we knew it was coming but the question is whether there are sufficient grounds for appeal. Comparing this with Everton’s deduction is apples with oranges - it’s almost like they are making up the punishments as they go along.

All the people mentioning City need to remember that City make large profits every year. Forest made losses, which is why they got a points deduction.

  8. Premier League statement on Nottingham Forest points deductionpublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024
    Breaking

The Premier League have released a statement following the four-point deduction given to Nottingham Forest this afternoon.

A statement read: "An independent Commission has applied an immediate four-point deduction to Nottingham Forest FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) for the period ending Season 2022/23.

"Nottingham Forest was referred to an independent Commission on 15 January, following an admission by the club that it had breached the relevant PSR threshold of £61 million by £34.5 million. The threshold was lower than £105 million as the club spent two seasons of the assessment period in the EFL Championship. The case was heard in accordance with new Premier League Rules, which provide an expedited timetable for PSR cases to be resolved in the same season the complaint is issued.

"The independent Commission determined the sanction following a two-day hearing this month, at which the club had the opportunity to detail a range of mitigating factors. The Commission found that the club had demonstrated “exceptional cooperation” in its dealings with the Premier League throughout the process."

As unlikely as it is that Sheffield United will avoid the drop, they're now only eight points from safety, as opposed to the 11 previously. Huge psychological boost for them going into their final matches after Forest's point deduction.

  10. What happens if Nottingham Forest appeal?published at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Nottingham Forest will have seven days to appeal their points deduction to the Premier League.

The response to the appeal has to be sent within seven days of that. A directions hearing to agree a date for the appeal to be heard will then have to take place within seven days of that.

The absolute backstop date for the appeal hearing to be concluded is 24 May, which is after the final games.

However, the guidance in the regulations is that ‘if possible’ it should be done a long time before 24 May and we have reached this point three weeks ahead of deadline so there is no reason why it should not be done before the final games.

  12. Forest's final fixturespublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024

Now in the relegation zone and pending any possible appeal of course, Nottingham Forest have just nine matches left to avoid dropping back into the Championship at the end of the season.

In those matches, they will face three of the four other sides in the bottom five in Everton, Sheffield United and Burnley, having drawn at Luton Town on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side's remaining fixtures also include a trip to Tottenham and home clashes with Manchester City and Chelsea.

    Forest's final nine fixtures:

    30 March - Crystal Palace (h)2 April - Fulham (h)8 April - Tottenham (a)13 April - Wolves (h)20 April - Everton (a)27 April - Manchester City (h)4 May - Sheffield United (a)11 May - Chelsea (h)19 May - Burnley (a)

Since their promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2022, Nottingham Forest have signed close to 40 players at a combined cost of around £250m.

It has been widely reported that former boss Steve Cooper didn't even know that certain players were going to arrive at the City Ground before they turned up.

Everton were docked 10 points in November - reduced to six on appeal- for breaching financial rules, with an independent commission finding their losses to 2021-22 amounted to £124.5m.

Premier League clubs can lose £105m over three seasons - £35m per campaign - but, because Forest spent two years of the assessment period in the Championship, their maximum loss was only permitted to be £61m.

But could Forest, who are likely to appeal now pay the price for that at the end of the season?

There current pain is very much Luton Town's gain and given Forest have collected just one point from the last 12 available to them, they are now in a very tricky predicament.

Nottingham Forest's four-point deduction sees them drop into 18th in the Premier League table, a point below Luton Town.

Coincidentally, had Forest not conceded a late Luke Berry goal at Luton on Saturday, Forest would be in 17th and two points clear of safety, even after this deduction.

  16. Forest docked four points for financial rule breachpublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024
    Breaking

Nottingham Forest have been docked four points for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, BBC Sport understands.

The immediate loss of points mean Forest drop below Luton Town into the Premier League's relegation zone, although they are likely to appeal the decision.

They are the second top-flight team to be penalised for PSR breaches after Everton were deducted 10 points in November, which was reduced to six on appeal.

The sanction follows Forest's hearing on 7 and 8 March.

Blake S, London: Do you think yesterday’s win has saved Erik ten Hag’s job as Manchester United manager?

Phil McNulty: Bit soon to say that, Blake, as we have no firm indications what will happen but the fact that he was able to get such a spectacular result against the arch enemy Liverpool in a sensational finish was just like old times at Old Trafford. He was also positive with his substitutions and tried to take the attack to Liverpool.

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still weighing up his options, the whole day would not have done Ten Hag’s cause any harm at all. Now, though, Manchester United must build on what was their best day at Old Trafford for years.

Bob Frapples: Hi Phil, perhaps VAR could learn from the NFL, where the referee reviewing a call has a maximum of 90 seconds to see "incontrovertible visual evidence" that the original call was incorrect. Thoughts?

Phil McNulty: I actually think you might be on to something there, Bob. It would certainly stop these endless replays and the sort of delays we got at Wolves and West Ham over the weekend, the sort thing that drives fans – the paying customers in case we forget – mad because this goes on and on and they haven’t got a clue what is happening.

I like the sound of that.

Gary Bundy: Phil, why were you a 'real advocate' for VAR? It was blindingly obvious from before the outset what it would do to the game. Those who supported the VAR programme must take the blame and responsibility for what it has done. How do we get rid of it and get back to our glorious game, errors and all?

Phil McNulty: Because I thought it would help get the big decisions right and clear up “clear and obvious” errors. The “clear and obvious” clause evidently does not exist any more. I also did not think it would take several minutes to reach decisions and end up looking for miniscule offences that might lead goals to be disallowed, sucking the joy of watching the game.

    Other than that though….
