Former England cricketer Stuart Broad clearly wants to hear something about Nottingham Forest and a possible punishment for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

In a post on X,formerly known as Twitter, Forest fan Broad wrote: "When are we expecting to hear the Nottingham Forest FFP hearing verdict? I’m intrigued by it all.

"How come our hearing & verdict has come before Manchester City’s? They were charged way before us weren’t they?"

Below is a reminder of how the bottom of the Premier League currently looks. Any points deduction could have serious implications for the East Midlands club.

Robert Kaye: Do you think immediate post-match interviews should be binned? Always feels like managers and players, especially after losses, are too high on emotion to give proper answers especially when compared to the latter post-match media press conferences?

Phil McNulty: Hi Robert. I’m a journalist so I am never going to say “yes” to this am I? What I will say it that it’s fair to suggest there has to be an understanding that emotions are running high right after a game. This isn’t a recent thing, by the way. I’ve been around a long time and seen plenty of managers go off. They just never used to be always captured by the cameras at the time.

Andy Norman: Great reward for Mark Robins to play United in the semi-final. Do you agree he has done a great job at Coventry?

Phil McNulty: He has done a fantastic job, Andy. No praise is too high for him and what about the bravery he showed tactically in taking the game to Wolves at Molineux on Saturday. It may have come very late but Coventry were fully deserved winners.

Robins almost for the Sky Blues into the Premier League last season, only losing to Luton Town in the play-off final, and they are in play-off contention again.

Now they have a trip to Wembley to play Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final, quite the story as Robins is widely regarded as the player who saved Sir Alex Ferguson’s job with a winner at Nottingham Forest in 1990, paving the way for the great manager to win his first trophy at Old Trafford.

And do you know what? I bet Coventry fancy themselves, such is their belief.

San Marino's players celebrate scoring against Denmark in October 2023Image source, Getty Images

San Marino are the lowest-ranked national team in the world and have won only once in their history - but that could be about to change.

It is approaching 17 years since San Marino captain Matteo Vitaioli, the player with the most appearances in the country's history, first represented his national team. He is yet to celebrate a victory.

Two decades and 136 games interspersed with crushing defeats and the odd near-miss have passed since San Marino, the world's fifth-smallest country, recorded the only win in the team's history.

"The worst memory was the match away to the Netherlands in 2011, which ended 11-0," Vitaioli tells BBC Sport. "It was already eight or nine with a lot of time left and I remember the supporters cheering on the Netherlands to see more goals."

According to Fifa's rankings, they are the world's worst national football team - one which has lost 192 of the 201 fixtures they have contested.

But Vitaioli and his team-mates have the chance to write a new chapter for their country this week when Saint Kitts and Nevis - the Caribbean nation 63 places above 210th-ranked San Marino - visit for two friendly matches.

Luke: Hi Phil. Would you agree United’s win yesterday was another example of papering over the cracks? In my opinion we were very lucky. We looked amazing going forward but if we didn't have a shot at the end of play phase we looked so open and vulnerable to the counter. Midfield was non-existent as they had all committed forward. Liverpool had an off day yet still scored three against us.

Phil McNulty: Time will tell on this one, Luke, but I do think you’re adopting a bit of a glass half-empty attitude after the events at Old Trafford yesterday.

I certainly agree Liverpool had far too much space in midfield, which contributed to United conceding three, but they have had so much criticism this season let’s give them credit and praise on this occasion for showing the character to secure an outstanding win.

As for papering over the cracks…let’s wait and see but feel free to come back to me if you are proved correct.

This should actually be a fantastic platform and confidence booster for Manchester United to build on.

Ade in Cheshire: Great result for United given their injury problems. Why do you think the press have been a lot more sympathetic towards Newcastle’s injury woes compared to United? It feels the press have been a lot more dismissive of United’s injury troubles.

Phil McNulty: Not sure about whether the press (and that includes me) have been more sympathetic towards Newcastle’s injuries but there is no doubt Manchester United have had big problems of their own to contend with.

Maybe there is just greater scrutiny on Manchester United because of the sheer size and scale of the expectations at Old Trafford.

Danish Viaplay Sports commentator Niels Christian Frederiksen has defended Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the German boss stormed out of an interview in a clip that has gone viral on social media.

After Frederiksen questioned Klopp on his side's intensity during their FA Cup exit at Old Trafford, Klopp suggested that Frederiksen "wasn't in a great shape" before abruptly departing the interview.

Speaking on his account of the events, Frederiksen defended Klopp, saying: "That's not how Klopp is. It wasn't meant like that at all. He's not at all mean."

    James Ward-ProwseImage source, Getty Images

Luke: Hi Phil, for me James Ward-Prowse would get in almost any national team squad, and has consistently performed in the Premier League for some time, yet it seems even with Phillips dropped he can't get in the England squad, and barely gets a mention. Harshly treated surely...do you agree?

Phil McNulty: I do think James Ward-Prowse should have been included in more England squads in the past but it does seem Gareth Southgate has decided to look elsewhere. It will be interesting to see if he turns to him should there be any injuries this week.

I think he was left with no option other than to exclude Kalvin Phillips. His form has simply not been good enough and Jordan Henderson picked up an injury playing for Ajax at the weekend.

I can see why you would advocate Ward-Prowse but I am afraid I am very doubtful he will make the Euro 2024 squad.

    VARImage source, Getty Images

Tom: Hi Phil, I’m just wondering with all the issues with VAR this year especially, should PGMOL be putting more focus into fan surveys rather than just focusing on the ‘VAR errors’. There seems to be a real disconnect between fan opinion and that the referees believe they are still getting decisions correct. Surely the most important thing is fan enjoyment as football is a spectator sport and VAR is sucking the enjoyment out of watching.

Phil McNulty: I complete agree with your latter point, Tom. VAR is sucking a lot of the joy out of football as players and fans are now almost hesitant to celebrate goals in case they are ruled out or we have a farcical six-minute delay to decide on a handball at West Ham. We saw the same when Ellis Simms put Coventry City ahead at Wolves on Saturday. It’s tortuous. What happened to clear and obvious?

I think if the PGMOL conducted a fan survey they would get a very unfavourable response about the way VAR is used in this country, with the constant interference and delays.

I was a real advocate for VAR but what I have seen and experienced has put me right off. Until a way of making it more user-friendly and it does not cast this shadow over games, I’d be happy with goal-line technology and semi-automated offside.

Gareth Southgate and Ben WhiteImage source, Getty Images

Aaron W, Banbury: What do you make of Ben White telling Gareth Southgate he doesn’t want to be picked for the England squad?

Phil McNulty: Not that much, to be honest, Aaron, I think Ben White is well within his rights to tell England he does not want to be picked but now equally Gareth Southgate should not bother his head about him unless, or until, White picks up the phone to tell the England manager he now wishes to be considered.

This is down to White now as Southgate has got far more important things to concern himself with than a player who does not want to play, with Euro 2024 coming up and a squad to be selected.

I also think Southgate was absolute right to give that full explanation of why White was not in the squad because, as he rightly said, it would have potentially hit his credibility had he tried to talk his way around it, given the player’s excellent form for Arsenal.

Kev: Do you think Nottingham Forest are likely to hear their fate today, and what are you anticipating to be the likely outcome?

Phil McNulty: Hi Kev. Think it is certainly coming very soon, talk of this week, and there does seem to be the feeling that there will be some sort of points deduction – quite how many no-one is sure. Everton, of course, got a 10-point deduction then reduced to six on appeal.

But it’s all a bit of an unknown at the moment.

Paul: Hi Phil. England coming up soon. What do you think Gareth will be looking for most from his players in the upcoming fixtures?

Phil McNulty: I think he will be looking for his tried and trusted players to show they are in good condition and in good form but I think he will be taking a really close look at those he has called into the squad, such as Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, to maybe give him some food for thought before he names his final party for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Interesting to see if Brentford’s Ivan Toney gets a chance as he weighs up his striking options for the role of deputy to captain Harry Kane. Good to see Liverpool’s Joe Gomez recalled and he will be another interesting one because a player of such defensive versatility might be useful if there are any injury problems.

  15. 'I don't see any reason for a change' of Man Utd managerpublished at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2024

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, has been voicing his support of manager Erik ten Hag on BBC Radio 5 Live:

There has been plenty of media reports linking other managers to the Old Trafford job this summer but former goalkeeper Schmeichel, who helped the club win the Treble in 1999 says he would not alter things.

“I don’t see any reason for a change (of manager after this season). I don’t see any reason for a change in the first place," he said.

“There’s a lot of other positions in the club that need changing, and you can’t do everything in one go. I was pleased with him yesterday, I have to say. Everything looked different around him.

“He came on the pitch in his suit and tie. He looked a different man yesterday. He looked like the manager. A strong character. Sometimes these little changes have a massive impact."

Thee: Hi Phil, do you think that United can get top four with Spurs and Villa having dropped points, Villa in the Europa Conference League and they also need to play the likes of City? Or do you think United can get at least fifth?

Phil McNulty: Morning, Thee. Well United are certainly in the mix for all their inconsistencies and I do think they have a chance of getting fifth, although it will be a real battle and they must show the consistency that has eluded them this season.

The results, not just their own, went for them over the weekend with Spurs losing at Fulham and Villa drawing at West Ham United.

Spirits should be soaring at Old Trafford after that spectacular FA Cup win over Liverpool – but now they must build on it if they are to have a chance of Champions League football next season. They cannot rest on their laurels.

Living in Channel Islands, it is difficult & expensive to attend matches. Dad & I are lifelong Manchester United fans, 1st match we ever attended at Old Trafford was vs Sunderland 2006. Hours of travel by plane, train, and taxi, just to see a 0-0 draw that effectively handed Chelsea the title.

Phil McNulty: Nice easy one there, Steve! I think Leeds United will win the Championship while Leicester City and Southampton will go up with them.

Can I add as a bit of fence-sitter that I only say the Leeds bit with confidence because I think any of those behind them could go up. As usual, the Championship is a brilliant division.

Vicky G, Wirral: Do you think the manner of Liverpool’s defeat will have any lasting impact on the rest of their season? There is still so much to play for.

Phil McNulty: It will hurt for a few days, Vicky. I’m sure of that. They will also feel even worse because they will know this was a game that should have put to bed before Antony’s late equaliser in normal time but they were, in my opinion, too complacent and lacked urgency when in control in the second half.

I’m sure they will come back firing as normal after the international break. If anything, a defeat of that nature to Manchester United, of all teams, may act as further inspiration as they try to add the Premier League and Europa League to The Carabao Cup.

Harrison Ncube in Johannesburg: Hi Phil, I'm still in this bubble of excitement from yesterday's classic victory over the old enemy. What do you think was the secret to Manchester United's victory? What did you take from this performance, and what went wrong with Liverpool? How did they pull this rabbit from the hat because wow, that was a magical victory?

Phil McNulty: Hello Harrison. I bet you are. I think the secret to Manchester United’s win was that they stuck in there, showed character, made sure they stayed in the game and then took the chances when they came along. Maybe not such a secret after all.

I think I take from this performance that this team has it in them to produce displays like this against top sides like Liverpool but they don’t do it often enough. They must use this as a platform to make sure it is the rule rather than the exception.

I think Liverpool’s problem was that they always looked vulnerable at the back yesterday and lacked their usual urgency and clinical edge when they were in control and leading 2-1 in the second half. I felt they got a bit complacent.
