West Ham head coach Graham Potter on what his ambitions are for the club: "My focus is on meeting the players and preparing for a game in third round of the FA Cup against [Aston] Villa

"My experience is if you can build a team that's identifiable on the pitch, the supporters are proud of and enjoy watching. Everybody is aligned in terms of what we want to achieve and how to play football. If that alignment is there and there's that connection between club and fans, then why put a ceiling on anything?"

  6. Graham Potter record at Brightonpublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

Let's take a trip down memory lane while we wait for the new West ham boss to appear.

Graham Potter achieved great things in Sweden with Ostersunds - he took them from the fourth division to Europe - but it was at Brighton that he made a name for himself in England.

Potter oversaw 120 Premier League games with the Seagulls, including 34 wins, 44 draws and 42 defeats.

While his win percentage was only 28.3%, that doesn't tell the story of the countless players he improved and the role he played in turning Brighton into an established top flight side.

Potter's record of success in the Premier League rests on his time at Brighton where he did well but didn't win anything. After spending £300m plus in the transfer window with Chelsea he still got the sack months later. He will have nowhere near that level of investment to strengthen a struggling West Ham squad as the owners do not have the billions needed. By this time next year West Ham will still be where they are now and Potter will be gone.

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on the Football Daily podcast

How does Graham Potter go in? What does he do different?

I think he is tactically very good, he is a good coach, but you can only work with what you've got and West Ham are a side lacking in confidence.

He will go in straight away and try and set a standard but he will be under so much pressure to deliver that type of set-up - what does he go and do? How does he approach it? And will the fans take him on side straight away?

All set at West Ham for Graham Potter’s announcement press conference at 09:00 GMT this morning.

Of course we will try to ask him about his plans for the West Ham team and why he’s chosen this job after being out of work since leaving Chelsea in April 2023.

  10. 'Europe was never the target for West Ham'published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on the Football Daily podcast

Julen Lopetegui will be feeling frustrated. The way it gets analysed right now from the coaching staff is that they have the same points as Manchester United, one less point than Spurs.

I don't know where fans got the impression that West Ham were aiming for European places - that was never the target.

The target was to change the style of the team and get the team playing in a completely different way and I get the impression that Lopetegui had started to see things that were going to happen in the second half of the season and things were going to be better.

This is how West Ham announced Graham Potter as their new manager.

The club said: "A highly-respected and sought-after coach, Potter has been awaiting the right opportunity after leaving his last role at Chelsea in April 2023, and was the board’s unanimous choice to take the Club forward in line with its objectives and ambitions.

Potter, whose progressive style and flexible tactical approach previously impressed at Swedish club Östersund, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion, has a passion to return to Premier League management and is relishing the opportunity to work with West Ham United’s talented squad of international players.

Graham Potter is probably the best manager West Ham could get their hands on right now. I expect to see a much more organised team structure and won't be surprised to see the Hammers finish close to 10th. Great appointment.

  15. 'The challenge is to take the next steps' - Potterpublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    West Ham United

More from Graham Potter here after signing a two-and-a-half year deal with West Ham:

“My conversations with the chairman and the board have been very positive and constructive, we share the same values of hard work and high energy to create the solid foundations that can produce success, and we are on the same wavelength in terms of what is needed in the short-term and then how we want to move the club forward in the medium to long term.

“The club have made a lot of good progress in recent years and ensured there are some very strong foundations in place to build on. You don’t win a European trophy by fluke – there has to be a good bedrock at a football club for that to happen, and the challenge now is to take that on and build the next steps, to develop a team and a club that the supporters can be proud of."

"It was important to me that I waited until a job came along that I felt was right for me, and equally that I was the right fit for the club I am joining. That is the feeling I have with West Ham United.

“West Ham is a huge club, at the heart of London, with a tremendous fanbase and great support all around the world. I saw the scenes that followed their Europa Conference League victory in 2023 and it was clear that this is a club with everything in place to become consistently successful, both on and off the pitch."

  19. Potter 'a good fit' for West Hampublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Speaking to a lot of people around Graham Potter's appointment at West Ham, the general consensus is he is a good fit, in a way Julen Lopetegui wasn't.

West Ham have a reputation for being dysfunctional but owner David Sullivan does tend to give managers time - there is a school of thought Lopetegui was given more time than he would have got virtually anywhere else.

West Ham benefitted from David Moyes' patient squad construction. Fair or not, Potter is viewed as a more progressive coach than the Scot but he shares the value of patience.

He won't blitz everything in the way you would expect Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte to but he will piece something positive together.

It has been suggested Roberto de Zerbi improved Brighton after Potter left. I am not entirely sure that is right. He laid the foundations - and Brighton were fourth when he left for Chelsea.

Like so many have said, it feels like a good fit.
