  1. Frank on Mbeumo injury, January recruitment and finding consistencypublished at 14:49 15 December 2023

Thomas Frank has been speaking to the media before Brentford's Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • He confirmed Bryan Mbeumo will have an ankle operation that will rule him out for 12 weeks, meaning he will miss the Africa Cup of Nations: "Bryan is a positive guy. Everyone that gets a setback, it’s always tough to take, but he will come back stronger."

    • Mathias Jensen remains unavailable, but Nathan Collins has returned to training and could feature.

    • On whether injuries will affect January recruitment: "We need to look into it. We will not take a player if we don't think it's for the longer term."

    • On what improvements he wants to see after back-to-back defeats, Frank said: "Basically, it’s improving our level to be more consistent."

    • On trying to win their last home game before Christmas: "It will mean a lot to all of us, to put a positive performance out there and hopefully earn the points. That would mean the world."

    • He added: "We need to be on it and the fans need to do everything they can to be on it. When we are a team together, we perform well."

    • He praised Unai Emery's "top job" with Aston Villa and hailed their impressive wins over Arsenal and Manchester City.

    • He still backs Brentford though: "We also think we are quite good. A lot of injuries or not a lot of injuries, we know we are a threat against any team in this division and hopefully we will be that again on Sunday."

  2. Brentford v Aston Villa: Pick of the statspublished at 11:59 15 December 2023

    • Brentford have lost four of their past five Premier League games, as many as in their previous 18.

    • Aston Villa are unbeaten in their six Premier League matches in London under Unai Emery (W4 D2).

    • Brentford’s Neal Maupay has either scored (two) or assisted (one) a goal in three of his past four home league games. However, Villa is the side he's faced the most without scoring in the top flight (eight matches).

    • No player has scored more Premier League goals following a ball carry this season than Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey (three). The Jamaican is averaging a goal or assist every 66 minutes in the league in 2023-24, with only Callum Wilson of Newcastle United having a better record (64 minutes).

In what has been a tough few days on the pitch for Brentford fans, with our injury-ravaged side falling to defeats at Brighton and Sheffield United, there has been one ray of light.

Mikkel Damsgaard made his comeback from injury at Amex Stadium as a substitute midway through the second half, and was given a similar amount of time at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

Damsgaard has struggled to find his best form consistently for Brentford, but both of those cameos showed what he is capable of, and how he could play a key role for the rest of this season and beyond.

In each match, he looked calm on the ball and played some brilliant pinpoint passes, but because of the side's enforced lack of continuity, his passes were not anticipated or just did not quite work.

Against the Blades, for example, it was crying out for someone to play the key pass through the centre of their defence for someone to run on to. Damsgaard delivered that ball once, but unfortunately for Yoane Wissa, it just ran away from him, otherwise he would have been through.

Other than Damsgaard's positive displays, there was little else to cheer on the pitch in the two away games, and the latest injury - this time to top scorer Bryan Mbeumo at Brighton - was tough to take.

Nobody can fault the players' effort, but reinforcements are urgently needed. Hopefully Mathias Jensen will be back soon and we only have three more Premier League games before Ivan Toney returns.

  5. Your thoughts on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:38 11 December 2023

We asked for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Sheffield United and Brentford.

Here are some of your comments:

    Sheffield United fans

Robert: The win over Brentford was a small step on a very long trail. But I think Chris Wilder has made the right move as Sheffield United need to play front-foot football. If you let the opposition attack, they will score.

Neikl: It was like watching a different team. So full of energy and determination. and just what us Blades supporters want to see. As always, the team kept us biting our nails right to the very end. But no matter, we got over the line at last. What a feeling. It's why we support the Blades.

Tom: Wilder's put a rocket up the players. Their displays against Liverpool and Brentford have already been so much better. The passion we fans expect is back. We need it to continue and we will have a chance.

Nathan: An encouraging performance from us. Defensively we were compact, determined and committed. Anel Ahmedhodzic impressed, and Jack Robinson was tremendous for me with his wholehearted tackles and long throws. Good to have Wilder back, but still feel for Hecky who handled himself brilliantly under sustained pressure. Come on United!

    Brentford fans

George: Bryan Mbeumo's absence played less of a role in our defeat than Mathias Jensen's. Without his ability to dictate the flow of the match, we were toothless and flat. To be where we are on the table in spite of these injuries is a credit to how hard the remaining players have worked each week, but Sheffield just had a little more in the tank.

Kenneth: We are deep trouble with so many injuries. While I don’t think we will be relegated, it is very unlikely that we will pick up any points until early in the New Year.

R: Without Mbeumo and of course no Ivan Toney yet - although he will go in January to another club - the Bees will struggle and be in a relagation scrap within a month. They must buy and get someone to put that ball in the net and we need a couple of defenders as well.

James: Missing piece is the creative one, Ivan Toney. It's that simple.

  7. Sheff Utd 1-0 Brentford: What Frank saidpublished at 17:37 9 December 2023

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to MOTD: "It was a difficult game. Fair play to Sheffield United. They did well in a game that was even and tight. I felt there would be a magic moment that would decide the game and that came from Sheffield United and McAtee. I can't complain about the effort from my players.

"This is the Premier League. You can quickly run into a patch of games and you can lose four in five. Unfortunately it has happened right now. We have to keep going. Injuries don't help any team. I think we have a little bit too many."

  8. Sheff Utd 1-0 Brentford: Key statspublished at 17:26 9 December 2023

    • Sheffield United have won three consecutive league games against Brentford for the first time, while this is their first top-flight victory against the Bees since Christmas Day 1946 (6-1).

    • Brentford have lost three away games to teams starting the day in the relegation zone in the Premier League, one more defeat than they have away to teams starting the day inside the top three (2).

    • James McAtee scored his first Premier League goal, and his 10th overall for Sheffield United (55th appearance). He has been directly involved in 12 goals in all competitions in 2023 (seven goals, five assists), more than any other Blades player.

    • Brentford have lost four of their last five Premier League games (W1), one more defeat than in their previous 14 in the competition combined (W7 D4 L3).

    • Cameron Archer created four of Sheffield United’s nine attempts at goal in this match. The last Blades player to create more in a single Premier League game was Oliver Norwood against Crystal Palace in August 2019 (5).

  9. Full-time: Sheff Utd 1-0 Brentfordpublished at 17:04 9 December 2023

    Have your say image

A wonderful goal by James McAtee was enough for Sheffield United to beat Brentford and give Blades manager Chris Wilder a first win since his return to the club.

The Manchester City loanee's first Premier League goal lit up a rainy Bramall Lane in first-half injury time as he cut inside onto his left foot and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner.

Blades sub Anis Ben Slimane missed a great chance to make it 2-0 after 56 minutes but shot straight at Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal.

Brentford, without top scorer Bryan Mbeumo through injury, struggled to create many openings as they fell to a fourth defeat in their last five games.

The win is only Sheffield United's second in the Premier League this season and came in Wilder's second match back in charge following the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in midweek.

  11. Sheffield United v Brentford: Sutton's predictionspublished at 11:01 9 December 2023

    Sutton's predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on actor Dougray Scott, who stars in the new season of high-stakes drama Vigil.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

New Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has got a hell of a job to try to keep them up but, if anyone can do it, he can.

The Blades gave it a bit of a go in their defeat against Liverpool in midweek and on paper this is a game they might fancy getting something from.

Bryan Mbeumo's injury is a big blow to Brentford and made me think this might end up in a draw, but then I remembered how awkward the Bees are, which is why I have gone for them to find a way of nicking it.

    Dougray's prediction: 1-3

  12. Brentford yet again searching for the 'next man up'published at 16:59 8 December 2023

    Brentford expert view graphic

    Phil Parry, BBC Radio London

When being interviewed after the 2-1 loss at Brentford, Thomas Frank invoked the spirit of "the next one up" when asked about the first-half replacement of Bryan Mbeumo with Yoane Wissa, with the Cameroon international forward being the latest Bees player to have picked up an injury this season.

To fans of the NFL, the concept of 'next man' or 'next one' up is something that they are familiar with as the physical nature of that collision-based sport regularly sees starting players having to be replaced either mid-game or for the next match up. And of course, it is something which is referenced and seen in other sports.

Certainly, at Brentford this season it will be a refrain which must have been muttered on several occasions given an injury list that sees the names change but rarely the numbers.

Three full-backs, centre-backs, a host of midfielders and players missing from the forward line, Frank’s tactical tweaks have often been limited to the players he has at his disposal.

In recent games, one player who has exemplified the call for the 'next one up' is Saman Ghoddos. The last game of last season saw him given a fond send-off by his team-mates with his contract expiring in the summer.

He returned to the club at the end of August and has proven to be a very useful member of the squad. In the last two games, he has slipped again into a more defensive role and his boss has suggested he has been the best performer in those matches.

Frank reckons that the Iran international personifies the culture of his squad, with his willingness to do whatever is required for the team’s good.

That is what makes this group special in the Dane's eyes.

  13. Sheffield United v Brentford: Pick of the stats published at 09:15 8 December 2023

    • Sheffield United are unbeaten in their past five league games against Brentford, all in the Championship. Their most recent meeting was a 3-2 win for the Blades in March 2019.

    • This is the third top-flight game between Sheffield United and Brentford – the previous two were played on consecutive days in the 1946-47 season, a 6-1 Blades win on Christmas Day and 2-1 Bees win on Boxing Day.

    • London sides have won each of their past six Premier League away games against Sheffield United.

    • Among the 40 sides to play 100 or more games at the traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off time in the Premier League, Sheffield United have the lowest points-per-game record in this slot (1.01 – P105 W26 D28 L51).

  14. 'Mbuemo has become the key man - who will it be now?'published at 17:13 7 December 2023

Thomas Frank and Bryan MbeumoImage source, Getty Images

Brentford manager Thomas Frank says he will "find a solution" while "key man" Bryan Mbeumo is sidelined with an ankle issue.

Frank confirmed on Thursday that Mbeumo sustained a "bad" injury after scoring the opener at Brighton and will be out "for weeks".

"[Mbeumo] must be number two after Ivan [Toney] in terms of goals and assists, which is key," Frank said. "His work rate for the team is incredible. You don’t see many wingers who work so hard and mean so much.

"He’s become the key man, saying 'give me the ball, I’ll take this'. Who will that man be now? We’ll find out in the next weeks."

Mbeumo has seven goals and four assists in 15 Premier League games so far this season and Brentford have five matches in all competitions before last season's talisman Toney is free to return from suspension on 17 January 2024.

"Football is such a marginal game – inside of the post, outside of the post, deflection – there are so many things that you can’t control," Frank added. "And another thing is injuries. We need to do everything we can to recover well, assess and get players back, but there’s also just bad luck in it.

"Bryan’s injury is a clear one – it’s bad luck. He got caught, got pushed and rolled his ankle. It’s very frustrating, but I’m a positive guy and we’ll find a solution."

  15. Frank on Mbeumo's injury, 'impressive' Wilder and Sheffield Unitedpublished at 16:47 7 December 2023

Thomas Frank has been speaking to the media before Brentford's Premier League match away to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Frank confirmed that Bryan Mbeumo will be out "for weeks" after suffering a "bad" ankle ligament injury in last night's defeat to Brighton. He added that he "will find a solution" in his top scorer's absence.

    • On Wednesday's narrow defeat: "In a game where we were average, against a good team like Brighton who played more to their top level, to nearly get something out of it is down to our work ethic from the team."

    • Frank said he "admires" new Sheffield United manager Wilder "a lot": "I met him a few times in the Championship. What he did last time in the Premier League was very impressive."

    • On the Blades: "I know it’ll be a difficult game, I know they’ll be on it. They will come flying at us. We need to to perform. I know he [Wilder] will get them running. They will be coming for us. We’re preparing for both scenarios, the 3-5-2 or the 4-3-3 he played last night. I expect a back four."

    • On "special character" Saman Ghoddos: "Saman just wants to help the team. On performances, he has been one of our best player the last two games. What he brings to the group on and off the pitch is incredible. He’s just so good for the group."

We asked for your thoughts on Wednesday's match between Brighton and Brentford.

Here are some of your comments:

    Brighton fans

Richard: Brilliant! Billy Gilmour was outstanding and we have another gem in Jack Hinshelwood.

Viv: Bit nervy at first and the penalty shook us. Great to see Hinshelwood’s first Premier League goal. Igor had some nifty footwork at the back and there was the return of Magic-man Moder.

Norman: Brilliant for Hinshelwood. Even without several key players we controlled the game. We miss Solly March as he gives a much greater attacking threat on the right. Simon Adingra is fast, but doesn’t have the same experience in decision-making or the final product.

Peter: Fabulous win. So pleased for Hinshelwood. It got a little nervy in the last few minutes but another welcome three points. Let's hope it is the start of a good run.

    Brentford fans

Darren: The boys did the best they could but we truly are threadbare at the moment. The injury to Bryan Mbeumo only compounds things. It is hard for the Bees to play their A-game at present faced with the current situation.

Theo: We have so many injuries it is impressive we managed to keep within touching distance. We couldn’t keep the ball and couldn’t pose a threat going forwards. Missing Hickey, Ajer, Collins, Henry, Norgaard, Jensen, Dasilva, Schade, Toney and now Mbeumo. Lacking quality all over the pitch when our squad is that many down.

Connor: Unlucky loss. Good to see Mikkel Damsgaard out there again after his surgery.

Tim: Given all the injuries, it wasn’t a bad effort. Brighton did well and deserved the win. Another big effort on Saturday against the Blades and we will get something. Hope Mbeumo is OK.

  17. Brighton 2-1 Brentford: What Frank saidpublished at 23:34 6 December 2023

Brentford boss Thomas Frank to BBC Sport: "I think it was a fairly even game. in terms of chances. Brighton slightly on top - in the end a fair enough win.

"Tight game in many ways, we don't give a lot away. I think going here we know Brighton is a good team. So are we, but with the amount of injuries the boys gave everything. It could have been a draw but tonight it wasn't."

On the injury to Bryan Mbuemo: "We don't really know. He rolled his ankle so we will assess in the morning and see how he is. It is what it is, injuries are a part of football. We will find a solution and go again."

  18. Brighton 2-1 Brentford: Key statspublished at 22:00 6 December 2023

    • Brighton have scored in 31 consecutive Premier League matches, becoming only the fourth team to ever score in more than 30 games in a row, along with Arsenal (55 between May 2001-Nov 2002), Man Utd (36 between Dec 2007-Nov 2008) and Liverpool (36 between Mar 2019-Feb 2020).

    • Brighton are only the fifth side to both score and concede in each of their opening 15 matches of an English top-flight season, and first since Wolves in 1934-35 (16).

    • Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been involved in 15 goals in his last 18 Premier League appearances (10 goals, 5 assists) and he now has one goal and two assists in his last two appearances against Brighton.

    • Brighton have now gone 19 Premier League games in a row without a clean sheet, the longest current run of any side in the division.

    • Of teams to have taken at least five Premier League penalties, only Swansea City (95%, 20/21) have scored a higher percentage than Brentford (94%, 16/17). Bryan Mbeumo has scored all five of the penalties he’s taken in the competition for the Bees.
