  1. How do you motivate yourself when in a relegation battle?published at 09:59 5 April

    BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown

I have been in lots of relegation battles. I got relegated in my first year in the Premier League with Manchester City when I was only a teenager. I had to deal with that adversity so I know what it is like.

I do not think people crack or feel anxious in relegation fights, but you know when you are beaten. It is hard to fully motivate yourself as a team to get the desire to go back out there.

In these battles there are always people complaining and there are changes too. Managers are under pressure and fans add pressure as well.

There is no doubt that it is difficult.

There might not be a lot of hope for those teams in the relegation zone at the moment, but those players will still want to be playing in the Premier League next season. So they still have to use this time to shine because they inevitably will want a move back to a top-flight club.

  2. Everton v Burnley: Pick of the statspublished at 09:19 5 April

Here are the key facts and figures before Saturday's Premier League fixture between Everton and Burnley.

    • This is the third meeting between Everton and Burnley in all competitions this season, with the Toffees winning 3-0 in the EFL Cup and 2-0 in the Premier League so far. The last time they beat a team three times in the same season while keeping a clean sheet each time was in 1995-96 against Blackburn.

    • Since the start of last season, all nine of Everton’s Premier League home wins have been to nil. They’ve drawn five and lost 17 of their last 22 at Goodison Park when conceding at least once, since a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace in May 2022.

    • Burnley have conceded 30 away Premier League goals this season, their most in a season since 2018-19, when they conceded 36 under Sean Dyche. The Clarets have shipped two or more goals in their last six on the road, last having a longer such run in the competition in their first 11 away games in 2009-10.

    • Everton won seven of their first eight home Premier League games under Sean Dyche when they scored the first goal, only conceding one goal in those eight games. However, they have lost their last two when scoring first, losing both games 3-1 to Manchester City and West Ham.

    • Amadou Onana has scored in both of Everton’s games against Burnley in all competitions. The last Toffees player to score in three separate games against an opponent in a single season was Romelu Lukaku against Leicester in 2016-17.

    • Having beaten his former club Burnley earlier this season in the Premier League, Everton manager Sean Dyche could be the second Toffees manager to complete a double over a former club in a Premier League season, along with Sam Allardyce in 2017-18 against Newcastle United.

    • Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended an 18-game goalless run in the Premier League with his goal against Newcastle. He last netted in consecutive games in September this season, while he has three in his last five against Burnley

  3. No finance talk, only focuspublished at 15:35 4 April

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Vincent Kompany shunned questions about Burnley's finances and insisted he only wants to focus on a huge game against Everton on Saturday.

The Clarets have announced losses of £27.9m for the year ending 31 July 2023 in their latest accounts following relegation at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Burnley sit in 19th in the table and six points from safety with seven games to play and travel to 16th placed Everton who are four points clear of the relegation zone and face another possible point deduction in the coming days.

When asked what the club's losses would mean from a football perspective Kompany said: "You're asking me this - it's a three-game week and in 48 hours we've got one of the most important games of the season.

"What benefit is that to me to start talking to you about the accounts of the club?

"The only thing I can tell you is, do we look worried? Like we've lost control and calmness? We don't.

"Let me focus on the Everton game right now, that's what matters."

Despite being second bottom in the league, Burnley are unbeaten in their last four games.

Kompany, who led Burnley back to the Premier League in his first season in charge, was asked about possible relegation by reporters and said: "We're not going to talk about that right now.

"I've told you many times since January, those are the discussions we have mid-season and the beginning of the season. Not when we have seven games left and everything to play for.

"The only thing I will try to convey as a message is it's a scenario the club has known in the past and it's a club that hasn't panicked in those moments. So why all of a sudden why should we? Do we have to portray a crisis just because that's what you're supposed to look like?"

  4. Kompany on predicting outcomes, FA charge and 'remarkable' O'Sheapublished at 10:42 4 April

    Katie Stafford
    BBC Sport journalist

Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game at Everton.

Here are the key lines from the Burnley boss:

    • There are no new injury concerns following Tuesday's draw with Wolves and "everyone is ready to go".

    • On picking up two points from the past two games: "Winning gives us a better perspective than losing, but we are at the stage of the season where we still have everything to fight for and that is all that matters."

    • Kompany said his mindset is "to win as many games as possible" and avoid working out possible outcomes "because you can very easily overcomplicate it with maths".

    • On opponents Everton, who are also in the relegation battle: "There is no such thing as an easy game for us. We just have to prepare well and be aware of their strengths. We need to exploit the opportunities that they give us."

    • He said his comments on the standard of refereeing, for which he has been charged by the Football Association for misconduct, "was an objective assessment" and "there are ways to make it constructive" to improve the game.

    • On whether he will submit a response to the FA by Friday's deadline of 18:00 BST: "It's really far from my mind at the moment. I will dive into it once I’ve finished preparing for this game and I will have a few chats internally with the club. But what is done is done."

    • He said he "will share in the future" his thoughts on ways to improve officiating in the Premier League because "it is for the benefit of the game."

    • On Dara O'Shea's goal contributions this season: "There’s an element of design to it, but in the end it is always down to the player's intuition and desire. He always had that in his game but to do it at Premier League level is remarkable."

  6. Your thoughts on Burnley v Wolvespublished at 09:44 3 April

    Your views banner

We asked for your thoughts on Tuesday's Premier League game between Burnley and Wolves.

Here are some of your responses:

    Burnley fans

Lance: The team tried hard and played some good football. Passing was sloppy on occasion, though, and the marking was poor when we conceded the equaliser. When will Benson get a decent run in the team? He needs more than 10 minutes or so!

Bob: Never a free-kick for the Wolves goal. Can't help thinking that too many decisions are going against us. Really needed the three points but we'll take one and move on to the next... oh yes - Everton.

Jack: If the manager tells the truth against the powers that be they are finished. That's Sean and Kompany. Pace and Kompany out.

    Wolves fans

John: Valuable point against a Burnley side fighting for survival. The lack of strikers is clearly an issue and we had to adapt with only a small squad. Gary O'Neil has shown that he has tactical ability and the changes he has been forced to make are admirable. Cunha being back is great news but Dawson returning in defence would be so valuable. Much missed.

George: Apart from missing their injured attackers, Wolves sorely miss Dawson's solid presence in defence. Sa appeared exposed, and he was called several times to make vital blocks. The sooner he returns to the team the better. Cunha's return is most welcome.

Brian: Given the squad is so thin a draw at Burnley is a good result - well done to all the team. It says a lot about the spirit and attitude created by the head coach.

  7. Burnley 1-1 Wolves: What Kompany saidpublished at 23:35 2 April

Vincent Kompany applauds fansImage source, Getty Images

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany to BBC Match of the Day:

"Another good performance. The only thing we miss is another goal.

"I always want to reflect on the game, but the goal we concede, it's just not a foul.

"The lad just slides over after he tries a pirouette. The referee's in the best position on the pitch. He just falls over and we get a set-piece against us and concede a goal.

"As much as I want to look at my team, it does seem to be the trend of this season. These moments cost us.

"It just keeps happening. I think in the last game I was definitely not right in the way I reacted, I don't want to do that. I react calmly now. But I still see the same pattern.

"I get it, we all make mistakes, but it's just too much, it's too easy. He was in the best decision. It's absolutely clear it's not a foul.

"I think I have the right to be frustrated, and seeing as I'm expressing it in the right way, I think it's fine.

"But now we have to move on and focus on the next game."

  8. Analysis: Burnley 1-1 Wolvespublished at 23:09 2 April

    Joe Rindl
    BBC Sport journalist

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Burnley have won just once in all competitions since 23 December and this match felt like an opportunity missed.

The Clarets started cautiously with full-back Vitinho testing Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa in the first half, before they took the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen's tidy finish.

But, even after being pegged back, the hosts had spells of dominance after the restart and created chances to regain the lead.

Goalscorer Bruun Larsen should have doubled his tally in the 58th minute, but he fired Vitinho's cutback straight at Sa.

The Wolves keeper also did well to keep out a Wilson Odobert shot moments later that had deflected wickedly off a defender.

Vincent Kompany pointed out the officiating as the reason behind his side's defeat. You can read his thoughts right here.

But you could argue it's a lack of firepower which cost his side tonight, rather than the referee.

Only Sheffield United and Everton have scored fewer goals in the league this season than the Clarets.

  9. Burnley 1-1 Wolves: Key statspublished at 22:34 2 April

Here are the key facts and figures following the Premier League draw between Burnley and Wolves:

    • Burnley are now unbeaten in four Premier League games (W1 D3), after losing four in a row before that. They have picked up six points in their past four fixtures, as many as they accrued in the 12 before that.

    • Wolves are without a win on the road in three Premier League games (D1 L2), after winning three and drawing one of the four before that.

    • Burnley have enjoyed just two wins in their past 18 Premier League home games (D3 L13), keeping just one clean sheet in that run.

    • Each of Jacob Bruun Larsen's last three Premier League goals for Burnley have come at Turf Moor (four goals in total).

    • Rayan Ait-Nouri has netted two goals in his past three Premier League appearances for Wolves, as many as he managed in his previous 87 games in the competition.

    • Since his Premier League debut in January 2023, Pablo Sarabia has registered seven top-flight assists, with Pedro Neto the only Wolves player with more in that time.

  10. Full time: Burnley 1-1 Wolvespublished at 21:46 2 April

    Have your say

Burnley missed out on boosting their Premier League survival hopes as they were held to a frustrating draw by Wolves at Turf Moor.

Jacob Bruun Larsen put the hosts in front after 37 minutes by superbly tucking away Dara O'Shea's cross.

But Wolves levelled just before half-time when Rayan Ait-Nouri headed in Pablo Sarabia's wide free-kick.

Had results gone their way Burnley could have moved within a point of Premier League safety on Tuesday.

Instead, Nottingham Forest's win over Fulham, combined with the Clarets' failure to find a winner against Wolves, means Vincent Kompany's side stay 19th - six points behind 17th-placed Forest.

  11. Burnley post financial loss in latest accountspublished at 17:22 2 April

Burnley flag general viewImage source, Getty Images

Burnley have announced a post-tax loss for the 2022-23 financial year of £27.9m.

The accounts cover the 12 months leading up to 31 July 2023, which saw the side competing in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League the previous year and their subsequent promotion back to the top flight.

Turnover decreased from £123.4m to £64.9m due to the reduction in broadcasting distributions associated with competing in the second-tier.

The club recorded profit on the disposal of player registrations of £11.4m, but the decrease in turnover resulted in a £27.9m post-tax loss for the financial year.

A profit of £26m being posted the previous year means the Clarets wouldn't currently be at risk from the Premier League profit and sustainability rules, however, the club state in their accounts: "The principal risk to the group is the possibility of the football club's relegation from the league in which it competes.

"This would result in a reduction in the club's turnover and would bring forward debt reduction measures on external borrowings.

"Another risk to the Group is the consequence of non-compliance with Premier League, FA and English Football League rules and regulations, in particular Financial Fair Play regulations. The Group takes all necessary steps to ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations."

Burnley currently sit 19th in the table on 18 points, four points from safety.

  12. Burnley v Wolves: Sutton's predictionspublished at 10:59 2 April

    Chris Sutton and Jimmy Brown

Chris Sutton is making predictions for every Premier League game this season against a variety of guests.

For the midweek matches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he takes on UB40 drummer and Birmingham City fan Jimmy Brown.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Wolves were pretty limp in their defeat at Aston Villa and although their boss Gary O'Neil was right when he pointed out they were missing some key attacking players, the problem for him is if they are still missing them at Turf Moor.

Matheus Cunha is apparently close to a return after his hamstring injury, which will give them a boost up front, but I still feel like Burnley will give them a good game.

The Clarets were really hard done by against Chelsea, starting with the penalty awarded against them - which was a disgrace because I thought Mykhailo Mudryk dived - and followed by dismissals for Lorenz Assignon and manager Vincent Kompany,

But they still picked up a point and are now on their best run of results of the season with two draws and a win from their past three games.

They are only four points away from safety and a win here would be massive for them, but I don't think they will quite manage it. Still, even a draw would keep them in touch with the teams immediately above them.

    Brown's prediction: 1-2

  13. Delaying playing Muric 'may cost us our Premier League status'published at 16:50 1 April

    Natalie Bromley
    Fan writer

    Burnley fan's voice graphic

Surely it's not on, is it? Is the great escape on?

I had us dead and buried weeks ago. But look at the table now. After Nottingham Forest's points deduction, after the results this weekend went for us, after we battled so very hard for a point away at Chelsea - suddenly we are only four points away from safety. Despite Darren England doing his best to spoil it for us (I realise I can't get sent off and fined, but you can bet your life I have similar things to say to that man that Vincent Kompany did).

We entertain Wolves on Tuesday night under the famously tough Turf Moor lights and it is a game we can absolutely win. Luton face Arsenal, Forest have Fulham and Everton go to Newcastle. We could close that gap to just one point come 10pm on Tuesday night.

I can't even begin to imagine what the last seven games look like if that happens.

I have made this point before, but I am beyond frustrated that Vincent Kompany's decision to play Arijanet Muric instead of James Trafford came so very late. We look like a completely different side with him in it. We could have survived this season, we really could have.

Kompany has said recently that he "will be proven right" about Trafford. We don't doubt that. We don't doubt Trafford's natural talent. We don't doubt that he will be a top Premier League goalkeeper one day. But it's not about being right, it is about making the right decision to give your team the best chance of surviving. And, for this season at least, that meant delaying Trafford's progression in favour of a stronger keeper. Missing that may well cost us our Premier League status this year.

But for now, we take on Wolves and try and bridge that gap.

  14. Burnley v Wolves: Pick of the statspublished at 16:12 1 April

Here are the key facts and figures before Tuesday's Premier League fixture between Burnley and Wolves.

    • Burnley are unbeaten in their past six home league games against Wolves (W4 D2), since a 2-1 loss in the Premier League in March 2010.

    • Wolves have won three of their last four midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Premier League games (L1), as many as they had in their previous 16 (D4 L9).

    • Burnley have had a league-high six red cards in the Premier League this season (players only) – the last team to have more in campaign were Newcastle and Aston Villa in 2014-15 (both 7).

    • Burnley are unbeaten in their past three Premier League games (W1 D2), earning as many points in this run (5) as they had in their previous 11 matches combined (W1 D2 L8).

    • Pablo Sarabia has created the most chances (46) and played the most passes into the box (145) for Wolves in the Premier League this season. Indeed, the Spaniard created five chances against Aston Villa last time out – his most in a game in the competition.

    • Despite only playing four home games for Burnley, David Datro Fofana is the Clarets’ top scorer in the Premier League at Turf Moor this season (3). He’s netted three of their four home goals scored in these games (75%).

  15. Kompany on his red card, 'fuelling motivation' and 'talented' Wolvespublished at 11:36 1 April

    Millie Sian
    BBC Sport journalist

Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media before Burnley's Premier League game against Wolves on Tuesday night.

Here are the key lines from the Clarets manager:

    • On having the "belief" to draw against Chelsea with 10 men: "We all felt very proud of the players. They have done what we know they can do. Every time they have had a tough time or tough spot this season, they have responded by working harder and going again. They have showed belief so we'll carry on like this."

    • Kompany "slightly disagreed" with Lorenz Assignon's red card against the Blues, which led to receiving his own red card: "I did go and see the officials to apologise about the choice of words. My intention wasn't to say or suggest that an official would get in his car on the day of the match and come to the game with the intention to referee against a team. The frustration comes from the fact that it is a succession of mistakes."

    • He "presumes" he will be back in the dugout at Turf Moor to face Wolves: "For me, it's not my intention. If I had to write down on a piece of paper the version of a manager I want to be, none of it includes being the guy that gets sent off. I want to be there to help the team."

    • The Clarets have picked up five points in their last three games and Kompany believes it is a "reason for motivation" going into the final eight games of the season. "We will use anything to just fuel our motivation," he said.

    • On settling the minds of the players going into the final run of fixtures: "We have nothing to lose. We should have no fear. We should just go out there, run our socks off, and play our hearts out."

    • Kompany is expecting another close game between the two teams, after Wolves claimed a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture: "There have been a lot of narrow results and games like that. We are five or six months further on our journey and a lot of our players have hopefully progressed."

    • On where he feels Wolves are under boss Gary O'Neil: "I know they have got talent. The level of talent in this league is the best in the world. All of the teams that are not considered in that top six, seven or eight, have still got very good players. Wolves is one of those teams. It demands the best from us to get a result against these teams."

    • In terms of team news, Kompany confirmed that there are no players set to return from injury against Wolves. He added that his team doesn't want to be "irresponsible" in their management of injuries.

    • On whether he believes Burnley can survive in the Premier League: "All we are asking is to have an opportunity. So if between now and the end of the season we have one opportunity, that is enough for us. We are trying to bring ourselves into a position where we give ourselves a game - a chance. That's all, nothing more."

  16. 'I can understand why Kompany was furious'published at 09:44 1 April

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Former defender Stephen Warnock says referee Darren England got the "wrong decision" when he dismissed Lorenz Assignon in Burnley's draw at Chelsea on Saturday.

The right-back's yellow cards came in the opening 40 minutes, with both fouls on Mykhailo Mudryk and manager Vincent Kompany was then dismissed for his reaction.

"They have the wrong decision here," said Warnock on Match of the Day.

"Mudryk is trying to get across Assignon and he defends it really well. He gets his arm up across him and he stays strong. Mudryk goes down to the ground far too easy.

"If you need to make a decision then go and look at it again.

"I can fully understand why Vincent Kompany was furious at this decision."

Assignon is the sixth Burnley player to be sent off in the Premier League this season, more than any other team in the competition.
