Well, there we are, 32 goals in the Championship on what has been another stellar afternoon.

Plymouth's 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough gave us a sense of Groundhog Day as it matched last season's scoreline between the two at Home Park.

Leeds get the gong for the biggest margin of victory on a day when only one away side - league leaders Sheffield United - are going home with three points.

We will leave you to finish off the last of the Christmas shopping - or start it - depending on how organised you are...

    Cheers!

There is of course a Boxing Day feast of EFL football for you to get your turkey sandwiches stuck into.

But, before that, West Bromwich Albion host Bristol City in Sunday's Championship game.

Albion have a chance to move back up into the play-off places after Middlesbrough dropped points at Plymouth today.

They host a Robins side who have won once in their last six league games.

Join us for all the build up ahead of the 15:00 GMT kick-off time.

Plymouth Argyle will spend Christmas at the bottom of the Championship table after being pegged back by Middlesbrough on three occasions in a topsy-turvy game at Home Park.

Head coach Wayne Rooney told BBC Radio Devon: "It's frustrating. Reflecting on the game I thought first half we were excellent, both in possession and out of possession.

"I thought we got the press right, nullified the way Middlesbrough wanted to play - they're a very good attacking team and very good at taking the ball and playing through the lines.

"We were unlucky to go into the break only 1-0 up, and then second half we concede early, Middlesbrough then started getting control of the game a bit.

"But we were still creating good chances and good opportunities to score, so I think based on chances alone we probably deserved to win the game.

"I'm a little bit disappointed we didn't do better for two of the three goals, I think we were a bit naive."

  4. Blades 'really good' in Cardiff winpublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

    FT: Cardiff 0-2 Sheff Utd

    Sheffield United

Table-topping Sheffield United claimed a 2-0 win at Cardiff to retain their three-point advantage over second-placed Leeds.

Boss Chris Wilder was delighted with his side's efforts.

"To get to 50 points* is incredible. To come to a ground like this and break down a team like this… to play with the discipline and control we had was incredibly pleasing," he said.

"We're getting stretched a little bit at the moment with six senior players out, but they keep doing what they do.

"They play with that freedom, they play with that control and when they have to defend they're proud of their clean sheets.

"I thought we were really good today. The pitch wasn't great, they sat in and they were dangerous on the counter-attack, so we had to get so many things right."

*The Blades have won 50 points this season but are on 48 points because they started the season with a two-point deduction.

  5. A good challenge - Le Brispublished at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

Fourth-placed Sunderland came from a goal behind to beat Norwich 2-1 after the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Head coach Regis Le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle: "It was another tough game. Our opponent played well, we expected that, they are a good team, they can press and defend. It was a good challenge for us.

"The game was unstable with many mistakes from both sides but in the end we found a solution to win so it's good for us.

"The game was a little bit crazy, (a team) has to manage it properly. The referee did what he thought was best.

"During the corner kick (from which Norwich scored) I think it's a question of mentality. We had a lack of energy during that part of the game and it changed the dynamic.

"If we want to win more games we have to be well-rounded and set pieces are very important for that.

"It's not a question of snapping your fingers, you have to work on it, to show your improvements, from corners we are probably better, from throw-ins we still have work to do.

"Jobe is so powerful, he has the good quality to affect the game, it's not a surprise to us, he did very well today."

  6. Cifuentes praises Rangers' resiliencepublished at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

    FT: QPR 2-1 Preston

    QPR

QPR came back from a goal down to beat 10-man Preston and extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

Boss Marti Cifuentes told BBC Radio London: “I definitely think that it was a good football game, especially from our side. I think we had one of our best performances of the season, if not the best one.

“The guys are showing an amazing mentality. To start the game the way that we did, creating chances, hitting the crossbar. The guys are showing this fantastic resilience.”

Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup said he was unhappy with the way his side played, particularly in the second half of their 2-1 defeat at Sunderland.

Thorup told BBC Radio Norfolk: ”I am not satisfied with the second half. One thing is the goal, we conceded after a set piece, that can happen, but I’m not happy with the 20 minutes after that when we were not solid enough, not consistent enough, too hectic and take silly decisions."

The Norwich boss also criticised Jose Cordoba for getting sent off for a second yellow card in the 70th minute.

"Jose needs to be more clever in that moment," Thorup said.

"It’s a big factor of the game because it’s not bad for us to be 1-1 after 65 minutes, that’s an ok result in a difficult place to go. We were threatening on the counter. That was not good enough and of course changed the game for us and for them.

"The red card changes a lot, we had to make changes and change the formation and system and everything becomes more open.

"You have to stay away from that challenge, you cannot give the ref the option (to send you off). We could all see he was just waiting for that moment.

"You have to be more experienced and professional than that so you don’t give him the option. Unfortunately it changed the game too much for us."

Leeds cruised to a 4-0 win over lowly Oxford to make it nine successive home wins.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke told BBC Radio Leeds:"A perfect way to start the festive days. Obviously an important win. Impressive scoreline and impressive performance.

"I'm quite delighted with it. We could have scored a few more goals in the first half.

"But overall, the most important thing for us was to return to the dressing room with the clean sheet and three important points. It was good for the goal difference.

"All the offensive players chipped in with assists and goals, so it's good for the confidence."

David Livermore enjoyed his first win as Millwall's caretaker manager, courtesy of a 96th-minute winning goal from Lions striker Mihailo Ivanovic.

Livermore had been assistant head coach, before Neil Harris resigned earlier this month.

"Fantastic result for us," Livermore told BBC Radio London.

"Tough game, [an] opponent in form, very good out of possession, made it really, really tough for us.

"I thought it was a scrappy game, Territorially, I thought we edged it - I thought the ball was in their half more - without us creating great big chances.

"There is nothing better than scoring at The Den in the 90th [minute, or] whatever it was," he added.

Middlesbrough pulled themselves level three times in their incredible 3-3 draw at Plymouth Argyle, so it is no surprise that Boro manager Michael Carrick was impressed by his side's determination.

"I was pleased with the boys character and commitment and belief to keep pegging it back [in the] second half," he said.

"We can't concede that many opportunities and goals and expect to win games every week.

"From the attacking play and opportunities, we could have scored more, but we just gave ourselves too much to do," he added.

It was a scoreline that matched the same fixture last season, and at one point, any outcome looked possible.

"It is football. It is momentum swings, that is the game. We can be better. We have to be better," he admitted.

"We didn't do enough without the ball and defensively."

  14. 'Hard one to take' - Pelachpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

    FT: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Stoke

    Stoke City

Meanwhile it's now no win in eight matches for Stoke and boss Narcis Pelach.

"It's a hard one to take. You expect to win when they are down to 10 men," Pelach told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We defended badly (on both goals) – we shot ourselves in the foot. We have to be much more aggressive because we have more numbers than them in the box, it cannot end in a goal, it's unacceptable.

"In the first half I think we were more pragmatic, aggressive, won many more duels and second balls which is what I demand from the team. The first 45 minutes are good.

"There were some decisions which changed the game in big moments. Lewis Koumas was one v one with the keeper and was (given) offside when he was not and the two penalties (not awarded), Bannan and Lewis Koumas, this is unacceptable, but it is what it is at the moment."

  15. Owls showed big character - Rohlpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

    FT: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Stoke

    Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday beat Stoke despite playing the whole of the second half with 10 men after Di'Shon Bernard's red card.

Manager Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I am very happy with the three points. Big credit to my team, it was a little bit of a strange week but we stick together and showed big character today - we showed the togetherness we need.

"My team has a strong mentality, willingness, we want to take points. 32 points after 22 games is massive. First half I felt we controlled the game but then the reaction from the team (after the red card) was great.

"I am very happy with the assist from Yan Valery, we have four or five players who overcame illness overnight, it's a good story with Callum Paterson who scored - for him it's not always easy but he is always trying, it was great to see him score."

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard said the performance from his side in the second half of their 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth "wasn't good enough".

"It is the first one I’ve had here where I’ve felt like that, our performances had been really good," Lampard said.

“It was a clear show of what football, especially in the Championship, is all about. When you find a hard moment and you don’t compete, then the result will look after itself.

“I’m not going to harp on about individual errors because they happen, but they do lose you games.

“Heads were dropping in the second half and they now have to realise that can’t be the way. We can lose a game of football but you can’t lose the confidence and the desire to do something about it.

“They were too aggressive for us in the second half and we weren’t aggressive enough, and when you get that wrong in the Championship then you lose games like this.”

Callum Lang celebrates scoringImage source, Rex Features

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was full of praise for striker Callum Lang, who scored all four goals in their 4-1 win over Coventry.

“Since Callum has come to the football club he has scored some big goals and he has been our outstanding player this season," Mousinho said.

“The energy he puts in, the amount of running he does, his physical presence and it is about adding quality for him - today he added the quality and was superb.

“My only disappointment is that he didn’t score more. It was really pleasing and he should be pushing for more and more.

“He put himself in the right positions and when he got the chances he finished them."

Mousinho said it was a "fantastic result and performance, especially the second half".

“I’m really pleased that with that adversity in the first half going a goal down and almost going two down we grew back into the game," he added.

“We were worth the win and probably worth a couple more goals. It was a comprehensive second half performance and I’m delighted with the three points.”

    FT: Hull 2-1 Swansea

    Swansea City

For Swansea it was back-to-back defeats.

"It was a really poor performance," boss Luke Williams said.

"The opposition were better than us. That's a big problem.

"But I don't quite know why we were miles off it - but we were.

"I can't say I jumped for joy when the ball hit the back of the net [for the equaliser] because from what I'd seen for the 40 minutes before that, we were well off the pace of the game.

"I think if we had got out of here with a point we'd have been very fortunate."

  19. 'A really good feeling' - Sellespublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2024

    FT: Hull 2-1 Swansea

    Hull City

Hull City picked up their first win in 14 matches to move off the bottom of the Championship at Christmas.

"It was a powerful feeling [at the end]," head coach Ruben Selles said.

"The club, the fans, the players, the staff have been looking for that feeling long enough and we finally break [the run], so it was a really good feeling.

"I think we played a really good game. We were clear in what we wanted, we minimised our opponent which is really difficult. We were aggressive.

"The only time in the game we were not is when we conceded the goal. It was clear why we concede the goal – we lost control of the game because we started to kick long balls.

"But when we got to 2-1, we never gave the feeling of 'now we need to protect'. We did not retreat."
