Wayne Rooney says he is grateful for the reception he got on his return to former club Derby County.

The Plymouth Argyle head coach led his side to a 1-1 draw at Pride Park as he came back to the club that gave him his first job as a manager for the first time since leaving more than two years ago.

Rooney was in charge as the Rams coped with financial problems that led to administration and a total of 21 points being deducted in the 2021-22 season as club were relegated to League One.

"It was strange going into the away dugout," he told BBC Radio Devon after the game.

"I'm very thankful to the fans for giving me a good reception getting off the bus and at the end of the game.

"I've had some great memories here at the football club during a very difficult period in the club's history.

"I'm sure the fans knew that in the time I was here as manager I did everything I could to try and keep the club sustained.

"I know there's a mutual respect between myself and the fans and I wish the club all the best moving forward."

Derby's Championship encounter with Plymouth Argyle on Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw, despite the Rams having four times the number of shots as their visitors.

On the Rams Daily podcast, Derby defender Nat Phillips spoke about how luck played its role in a game where he felt they should have seen the spoils of victory.

"We gave it our best - felt like we dominated, plenty of opportunities, kept knocking throughout the game but unfortunately, couldn't get that second goal," Phillips said.

"I think it's simply football. It wasn't for lack of effort, we know that. It felt like we were in their final third for a lot of the second half but sometimes the ball just won't go in for you."

On the foul that led to Plymouth's goal from Adam Randell's free-kick, Phillips added: "I saw the referee pointing to his shoulder. He felt Nat [Mendez-Laing] was a bit too rough - not sure whether I agree with that but I'd have to watch it back first.

"It's part of football, sometimes that happens - you concede goals like that.

"There was probably a little moment before the free-kick where we got a bit complacent; a few loose passes, a few extra touches.

"We were in control of the game then maybe, not took liberties, but that kind of thing."

Dominic Dietrich, Ed Dawes, Martyn Waghorn and Eric Steele bring reaction to Derby's 2-1 win at Coventry

Former Derby County goalkeeper, Eric Steele believes the addition of Liam Thompson to the starting line-up was key to their 2-1 win at Coventry.

The victory was the Rams' first away win of the season in the Championship.

"I'm impressed from many points of view, mainly a massive performance was needed after Saturday and both staff and players have fulfilled their roles.

"They made five changes and in the end the shape worked really well," Steele told BBC Radio Derby's Rams Daily podcast

The victory over Coventry ends a four game run without a win for Paul Warne's side and was Thompson's first Championship start of the campaign.

"Liam Thompson did what we said, he gets around people, he retains the ball, he knows when to pass it and (Kenzo) Goudmijn and him had a really good 20 minutes.

"We controlled possession a lot better than we did against Stoke on Saturday and I'm really, really pleased for Thompson.

"It was a great team performance and it will do Derby the power of good with a home game coming up," added Steele

Derby County manager Paul Warne says he will not complain about injuries as he goes for a first away win of the season at Coventry on Wednesday.

The Rams have taken just two points from their seven away games so far this season and are still without Ryan Nambe and David Ozoh.

"I can't moan about injuries because I've got 25 players," Warne told BBC Radio Derby.

"There are always going to be injuries, suspensions, lack of form and you've just got to shuffle the pack and try to get your best players out there."

Derby have been without full-back Nambe and midfielder Ozoh in recent weeks and Warne admits that has made things difficult.

"Ryan being out means we don't have an out-and-out defensive right-back so that makes it a bit more awkward and David was playing really well so he's a big miss," he added.

"Both of them will be welcomed back but as I know, when you get those two back there'll be two other issues."

Coventry have won their past two Championship games, scoring six goals in the process and Warne is ready for a big challenge.

"They've got one of the most experienced managers outside the Premier League," said Warne.

"I've played under Mark Robins and with him, they are a proper team with a really good age."
