  2. 'A podium is definitely on the cards' - Russellpublished at 13:37 30 June

George Russell starts in third in the Mercedes for today's race, he told Sky Sports: "We can plan stuff, but realistically the fight isn't with the guys ahead today, if there's an opportunity we will go for it but we need to make sure we secure that podium.

"Last week [at the Spanish Grand Prix] I spent too much time fighting with Lando and that cost me P3, and almost P4 in the end so let's see what today brings."

On the strategy, he added: "It's definitely closer to a three [stop] than to a one [stop], Max has the two hards [tyres], we've got the two mediums [tyres], but there's not going to be a lot to play, the hard and the mediums are not too dissimilar. I think everyone will start on the medium.

"A podium is definitely on the cards today and I think with we will be pretty satisfied if we came away with a podium, it would be three weeks in a row we've got a podium with the team. We are probably the third-fastest car at the moment and we still manage to qualify P3 for the last couple of races, so let's see what today brings."

  3. Mercedes' fight with Ferrari?published at 13:35 30 June

George Russell will take his place on the second row today - one spot higher with Oscar Piastri's demotion - and the Mercedes driver was happy with his overall qualifying performance in Austria.

"The car’s feeling really great at the moment, obviously the team have worked so hard bringing these upgrades," said Russell, who is aiming to claim a second podium finish of the season.

While he has one eye on the front row of pairing of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, Russell says he will also be keeping his wits about him due to the competition lining up just behind him.

"It feels like we’ve got a real fight on our hands, especially with Ferrari," he said.

"I think we’re still a little bit behind McLaren, and Max and Red Bull were flying, but it’s definitely going in the right direction for us."

Team-mate Lewis Hamilton said he had "quite a lot of understeer and couldn’t add much wing" as he moves up to P5 and added: "We can fight the Ferraris tomorrow but I don’t know if we can fight the McLarens. We’ll have to see."

  4. Postpublished at 13:32 30 June

George Russell has been on the Mercedes radio already after suffering a lock-up at Turn Three on his way to the grid. The Briton asks his engineer to check the steering, but they reply the data all looks good. It seems a strong tail wind into the corner caused Russell's wide moment.

  5. 'Excited to put up a good fight' - Norrispublished at 13:31 30 June

Lando Norris qualified in P2 in his McLaren and told Sky Sports: "This is one of my favourite places to come to every season, I'm excited to get things going and try and put up a good fight."

On taking the fight to pole sitter Max Verstappen, he added: "That's my plan!"

  6. Can Norris challenge Verstappen again?published at 13:28 30 June

In the build-up to Austria, Lando Norris said "everything needs to be executed perfectly well" in the pursuit of a race victory. So will the McLaren man be able to reach those flawless heights today and topple the world champion starting just in front of him?

We've already had a dress rehearsal for the big show yesterday and while Norris did manage to overtake Max Verstappen on track during the early stages of sprint, he couldn't quite make it stick against the Red Bull and ended his 24 lap-race in third place, after also being passed by his team-mate Oscar Piastri.

  7. McLaren will 'race hard' - Brownpublished at 13:26 30 June

McLaren CEO Zak Brown says the team are ready to take the fight to Red Bull - so watch out, Max Verstappen.

"Great work from the team with Lando claiming P2 in quali while Oscar will start P7 after his final lap was deleted," Brown wrote on X on Saturday.

"Damn hard to beat a 3 x world champion when he puts in an insane lap like that. Hats off to Max today, but tomorrow we race hard."

    Oooooh.

  8. 'For me, it's embarrassing' - Piastri on track limitspublished at 13:23 30 June

Oscar Piastri is a very level-headed guy but the Australian let his feelings be known after his deleted lap time and drop down to seventh for today's Austrian Grand Prix.

Track limits have been a major issue at the Red Bull Ring in recent years (remember last season's fiasco?) so the FIA have made a series of updates to the circuit for 2024 in the hopes it will resolve the problem.

However, Piastri told Sky Sports: "For me, it’s embarrassing."

The McLaren driver added: "We do all this work for track limits, put gravel in places, and I didn’t even go off the track. I stayed on the track and it was probably my best Turn Six and it gets deleted.

"I don’t know why they’ve spent hundreds of thousands, if not millions, trying to change the last two corners when you still have corners [where] you can go off.

"But anyway, everyone else kept it in the track - I didn’t. That’s how it goes."

  9. What is the weather forecast for the Austrian GP?published at 13:20 30 June

The conditions will be dry with temperatures around 28 degrees for the Austrian Grand Prix but there is a bit more cloud around today.

Any potential rain risk will most likely visit the circuit tonight - so long after we've packed up and gone home.

    Pit lane is open.

Max Verstappen was in a class of his own during yesterday’s pole position fight with his advantage over Lando Norris' McLaren 0.404 seconds.

It was the three-time world champion's 40th career pole and his fourth consecutive at the Red Bull Ring since 2021.

  11. 'I hope I can find the same balance of the car' - Verstappenpublished at 13:15 30 June

Max Verstappen will start on pole for the eighth time this season, he told Sky Sports: "It's a combination of things. I like to drive the track, that's normally not really an excuse if you do well or not, the car has been good in the high-speed corners from the start. I was not particularly happy yesterday with the sprint race with how the car was behaving so we made some little changes.

"Sometimes these changes can put it into a better balance in the low-speed to the high-speed and you get a bit more lap time out of it."

On his plans for the start of the today's race, he added: "It helps that there is only one McLaren next to me now but they will try to do it again, they know they are quite good on tyres. I still expect them to be there in the race. I hope I can find the same balance of the car because that will help a lot on the tyres as well.

"It will be who can look after the tyres the best because in this heat as well the tyres are going to deg[radation] and you need to really take care of that."

  12. Zhou to start from pit lanepublished at 13:12 30 June

Sauber made a few set-up changes to Zhou Guanyu's car under parc ferme conditions, so the Chinese driver will now start the Austrian Grand Prix from the pit lane.

Oscar Piastri originally qualified in P3 but the Australian's lap time in the final part of qualifying was deleted for track limits at Turn Six, so now he will start seventh alongside the Red Bull of Sergio Perez in P8.

Below the top 10, Daniel Ricciardo was agonisingly close to making Q3 but had to settle for P11 instead. The RB driver will need to pass the Alpine of Esteban Ocon first to make his way into the points places.

Over in the Aston Martin camp, it was another dreary session for the team, with Fernando Alonso only making it into Q2 and Lance Stroll, who has just signed a contract extension, failing to get out of the opening session.

All eyes are on Max Verstappen today as the three-time world champion aims to seal the fifth Austrian Grand Prix win of his career in front of the energetic Orange Army at the Red Bull Ring.

The Dutchman has a now familiar opponent alongside him on the front row in the form of McLaren's Lando Norris; a driver who has finished runner-up to Verstappen in the last two races but perhaps should've ended his day in both Canada and Spain with the main prize.

The laps are only short in Spielberg but they pack a punch.
